2014 Maserati Ghibli Priced at $66,850, Rated IIHS 2013 Top Safety Pick

The 2014 Maserati Ghibli's $66,850 starting price falls right into the expected range.

The 2014 Maserati Ghibli enters an unfamiliar luxury sedan segment, deigning to thrust its Italian trident into a swarm of German competitors including the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, Porsche Panamera, and Audi A7. Maserati announced today that the base Ghibli starts at $66,850 and the higher-output Ghibli S Q4 is $76,950, including destination fees.

The 2014 Maserati Ghibli, which was unveiled earlier this year at the 2013 Shanghai auto show, has a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The base model puts out 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, while the sportier 2014 Maserati Ghibli S Q4 raises output to 404 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque and adds all-wheel drive. The additional power in the S Q4 brings the 0-60 time down 0.7 seconds, from 5.5 in the base model to a respectable 4.8 seconds. Top speed clocks in at 175 mph.

The Ghibli is a major change of pace for Maserati, which hopes to increase worldwide sales to a lofty 50,000 vehicles by 2015. Having sold just 6,200 vehicles in all of 2012, Maserati is introducing lower-priced offerings like the Ghibli and upcoming Levante crossover in order to expand the brand’s reach and accessibility. It certainly feels unfamiliar to see Maserati at the $65,000-$75,000 price point, especially when the next-cheapest model is the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte S Q4 at a hefty $105,600, including gas guzzler and destination fees.

Maserati’s newest offering is safe, as well — the 2014 Maserati Ghibli earned the coveted 2013 Top Safety Pick award in the IIHS’s latest round of testing. The luxury four-door recorded  the highest possible rating of “good” in all categories including side impact, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush from a rollover, and whiplash-inducing rear collision. The IIHS did not conduct its famously stringent small front-overlap test in this most recent round, but we’ll be sure to report the results once they are made available.

The 2014 Maserati Ghibli is on sale now.
