It was evident from our first glance at the 2013 New York Auto Show that the 2014 Range Rover Sport certainly looked downright sporty – but could the new second-generation model finally live up to its suffix? From our time behind the wheel, the answer is yes. A number of changes – most notably the adoption of an aluminum-intensive unibody structure – helps the 2014 Range Rover Sport shed nearly 800 pounds, despite it growing nearly 2.5 inches in length.
The supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 offers commendable power, but the optional V-8 blesses the Sport with an insane 510 hp, which can whisk it from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds. Adaptive dampers help keep the beast flat in corners, while brake-based torque vectoring helps improve turn-in. Driven back-to-back with the larger Range Rover, the 2014 Range Rover Sport offers quicker steering and better body control. Although the base all-wheel drive system has a single-speed transfer case, an optional driveline boasts a two-speed transfer case that allows the Range Rover Sport to retain its off-road chops.
“It’s better than the Range Rover on the pavement and doesn’t give up much off road,” notes contributor Ezra Dyer. “The big Range Rover is still the boss, but the Sport is the one SUV I’d have in my garage.”
