The 2014 Jaguar F-Type is the first serious sports car from Jaguar in the last 50 years. Really, that’s all you need to know to understand why this convertible made it to the final round of Automobile of the Year deliberations. But let’s dig a little deeper.
Of course the 2014 Jaguar F-Type is a looker. Jaguar has been on a roll since the XF sedan hit the streets in 2008 and the F-Type is arguably the most attractive of the new Jaguar designs. The beauty isn’t just skin-deep for this roadster, though. Anyone fortunate enough to watch a 2014 Jaguar F-Type V8 S blast past will have plenty of advance warning. The supercharged V-8 engine packs 495 hp and hard acceleration produces an exhaust note that’s best compared to machinegun fire.
It’s not all good news for the 2014 Jaguar F-Type. Although this is the sportiest Jaguar offered, it has no manual transmission option. Yes, all sports cars are headed to two-pedaldom in a hurry, but that doesn’t mean we have to roll over and accept that fate. Thankfully the ZF eight-speed automatic provides quick shifts and never hunts for the correct gear. The more serious concern is how tight the cabin can be for taller drivers. Long-legged drivers over 6′ will likely find the driver’s seat too tight. We also found the 2014 Jaguar F-Type a little too stiffly sprung for the street, but a little too loose on the track.
