Production of the 2014 Ford Fusion begins today in Flat Rock, Michigan, as Ford increases capacity for building its midsize sedan. After adding 1400 new employees and investing $555 million at the Flat Rock factory, Ford can now build up to 350,000 Fusion sedans annually.
The Flat Rock factory already builds the Ford Mustang; until now, the Ford Fusion was assembled only in Hermosillo, Mexico. Ford previously could only build about 250,000 units of the Ford Fusion annually, but has increased that by 30 percent by adding production at Flat Rock. The Flat Rock factory was previously called AutoAlliance International and used to build the Mazda 6. When Mazda gave up on its half of the joint venture, Ford renamed the plant and retooled it to add Fusion production.
“Fusion has exceeded all of our expectations, with demand outstripping supply,” Ford president of The Americas Joe Hinrichs said in a statement. In fact, Ford says that in some of its top markets, the Fusion stays on dealer lots for just 20 days, and the top-spec Titanium model can turn in as few as 15 days.
Strong demand for the Ford Fusion has seen the midsize sedan’s sales hit 181,668 units so far this year — a 13.4-percent year-over-year increase. Despite the strong results, the Ford Fusion is still only the fourth best-selling midsize sedan in America this year. It trails the Nissan Altima (197,321 sales to date), Honda Accord (218,367), and Toyota Camry (242,406).
Changes to the 2014 Ford Fusion include the addition of rear seatbelt airbags, a new 1.5-liter turbo-four engine, and some trim changes including an optional red-leather package. Pricing for the sedan starts at $22,695, including a $795 destination charge.
