The Problem: When left to idle, especially in cold weather, the exhaust components in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra can overheat and start a vehicle fire. First, however, the truck’s check engine light will illuminate and the instrument cluster will show an, “Engine power reduced,” warning message. GM has received eight reports of fires but no injuries due to this issue.
The Fix: GM dealers will reprogram the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra engine computers The fix only takes about 20 minutes, but GM says that owners shouldn’t leave their trucks idling unattended until they have been recalled. The problem affects models with the 4.3-liter V-6 engine or 5.3-liter V-8 engine, but not those with the 6.2-liter V-8.
