While General Motors and Ford are duking it out in the fullsize arena with the showing of the Ford Atlas concept just after the reveal of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, GM is already preparing its second truck salvo, one which Ford does not have an answer for in the U.S. market. Despite low sales of the current-generation models, GM has committed to building a second-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon for the U.S. market, the only domestic-brand midsize pickups still in production.
But looking at these latest spyshots, the new Colorado and Canyon may stretch the definition of “midsize,” especially in crew cab, long-bed configuration, as this tester appears to be. The combination of the longer bed combined with the crew cab will be a new configuration on the new model, as the current Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon only offer a 61.1-inch box in the crew cab configuration.
Engine options for the new Canyon and Colorado are unknown, but it’s believed a gasoline four-cylinder and V-6 will be among the offerings. The V-6 will likely be either the high-feature 3.6-liter DOHC direct-injection V-6, or the just-announced 4.3-liter OHV direct-injected EcoTec3 V-6 that will serve as the base engine in the 2014 Silverado and Sierra. An intriguing, but unconfirmed potential third engine option is the 2.8-liter four-cylinder Duramax turbodiesel offered in the global market Chevrolet Colorado producing 177 hp and a stout 347 lb-ft of torque.
