By now you’ve read our review of the track-ready 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, and boned up on five of its most impressive technological achievements. Now watch as our colleagues at Motor Trend put the car through its paces at the drag strip, on the skid pad, and during full-attack lapping.
Although straight-line performance isn’t this car’s stated purpose, the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 manages to hit 60 mph in 4.0 seconds in Motor Trend‘s hands, and runs through the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds at 117 mph. And around the figure-eight handling loop, the Z/28 laps as quickly as a Ferrari 458, while pulling 1.07 g of cornering force. When it comes to braking, Carlos Lago is impressed not just at how quickly the hefty Z/28 comes to a stop, but with just how consistent that braking performance is every time.
Next, Randy Pobst gets behind the wheel of the Camaro Z/28 for some hot laps at Alabama’s Barber Motorsports Park. While straining to shout above the boisterous roar of the car’s 7.0-liter V-8 engine, Pobst soon finds plenty to like about the track car’s performance.
“This thing can really stop! Really powerful brakes,” Pobst says. “We are generating some G force with the Camaro in all directions — acceleration, cornering, braking.”
Pobst notes that because the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 runs on extreme performance Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires, the car needs to be properly warmed up before its full potential unleashed. As Pobst ably demonstrates, when the tires are cold, the Z/28 will routinely hang its tail out around Barber Motorsports Park’s corners.
