Now that we’ve driven the new 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe, it’s time to focus on the convertible. Months after a similar car was snapped in wet weather, these new photos reveal the upcoming 4 Series with the retractable hardtop testing under the sun.
That said, this 4 Series convertible is definitely eye-catching, especially with its M Sport package and Melbourne Red paint job that looks stunning under the bright sunlight. Better yet, the top is down and, not surprisingly, the 2014 4 Series looks pretty good with its roof stowed away in the back. While red paint with red leather seats seems like overkill, we’d have to see the color combination in person to see if it works. With the 4 Series coupe already revealed, BMW didn’t feel the need to cover up this convertible tester too much. The front grille should look identical to the coupe, but the rear end will have a slightly raised trunk deck to accommodate folding roof.
This tester is a 435i powered by the twin-turbo inline-six rated at 302 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 428i will get the turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 producing 241 hp and 258 lb-ft and we expect a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic gearbox will be offered for both engines.
Look closely and you’ll also spot a black M3 tester along with the 435i. The photographer only snapped the tail end of the M3, but it was enough to reveal the sedan’s large tires and part of its signature quad exhaust tailpipes. BMW M4 coupe and M3 sedan test mules have also been caught roaming around California and we expect the new M cars to churn out well over 400 horsepower from a turbocharged inline-six.
