2013 Mercedes-Benz C300 4Matic Gains Power, Economy, M-Class Gets Collision Prevention

Engines are being downsized throughout the automotive industry, with some models dropping six-cylinders entirely. But Mercedes-Benz still offers a choice of fours and sixes in its C-Class. However, if you want 4Matic all-wheel drive in a four-door C-Class, you have one engine choice. The M-Class SUVs also get upgraded safety technology across the board for 2013.

For the C-Class line, the big news is a new engine for the C300 4Matic model. As is the case with most current Mercedes-Benz and BMW models, the decklid numerology has little direct correlation to engine displacement anymore. The engine on the 2013 C300 goes from a literal 3.0 liters for the 2012 model to a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 248 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. This represents an increase of 20 hp and 30 lb-ft of torque from last year’s model. But as icing on the cake, the new engine is significantly more fuel-efficient than last year’s smaller engine, allowing the 2013 C300 to achieve an EPA rating of 20 city and 28 highway, compared to last year’s 17/24. All V-6 C-Class models get auto stop-start for 2013. Pricing goes up $960 for the C300 4Matic, from $38,895 to $39,855, including destination. Destination on all Mercedes-Benz models increases from $875 in 2012 to $905 for 2013.

All 2013 model M-Class models get Collision Prevention Assist, which uses radar sensors to detect the distance to the vehicle in front, and can prepare the brakes for emergency braking to provide maximum braking assist as soon as the driver applies the brakes. Pricing for the ML350 goes from $49,865 for the 2012 model to $50,675 for the 2013, a difference of $810.
