One of the most breathtaking features of the 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider is its butterfly-wing doors. Know what else is known by its trademark butterfly? Texas-based retail chain Neiman Marcus. This year, the two companies are coming together to feature 12 specially-designed Neiman Marcus Edition 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spiders in the 2012 Christmas Book.
Neiman Marcus has been adding a limited-run edition of the upcoming year’s hottest car as a feature in its annual Christmas Book as part of the set of “Fantasy Gifts.” Some of the other high-end offerings this year include a Jetlev R200 jet pack ($99,500), a walk-on role in the Broadway show Annie: The Musical ($30,000), and a private dinner for 10 cooked by Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Richard Rosendale, and Jerome Bocuse ($250,000). The McLaren rings in at the second-most-expensive gift in this year’s catalogue at $354,000 – a first-class trip for two to Paris and Geneva to tour the Van Cleef & Arpels boutique, atelier, and watchmaking workshops, along with his and hers watches, trumps the NM MP4-12C by carrying a cool $1.09 million price tag.
So what does that extra $85,750 over the MP4-12C Spider’s base price get you? First off, there will be just 12 of the special-edition Neiman Marcus cars made. Aesthetically separating them from lesser 12C Spiders are a volcano red paint job, lightweight diamond-cut wheels with gloss black trim, gloss black interior and exterior graphics, contrasting red stitching, and a stainless steel special-edition number badge. The price also includes a couple of goodies for discerning customers: a matching, custom-fit McLaren luggage set; a business-class trip for two with flights to London Heathrow from the continental U.S., two nights and meals at the Coworth Park Hotel near Woking, a tour of McLaren’s Technology Center, and a private dinner with McLaren Chairman Ron Dennis. $3000 of each purchase will also be donated to the Big Brothers Big Sisters charity.
Like all other McLaren MP4-12C Spiders, the Neiman Marcus edition is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 making 616 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. 0-60 mpg is accomplished in just 3.2 seconds and charges on to a top speed of 204 mph (or 196 mph with the top down).
The Neiman Marcus-edition McLarens will be first-come, first-serve when orders for the 2012 Christmas Book commence at noon EDT on October 24, 2012. Last year’s featured Ferrari FF sold out in just 50 minutes; the featured Camaro SS Convertible in 2010 took just three minutes; while the Jaguar XJL sold in 2009 took a full four hours.
