2012 Volkswagen Passat Configurator Online, $34k Fully Loaded

The process of buying a new car can be a pain, especially when you think about the potential hours spent at the dealership fending off salesmen trying to lure you into buying something you don’t want. Starting this week, Volkswagen’s online configurator now allows you to skip past the salesman run-around and build your perfect Passat before you even set foot on a dealership lot.

Pricing for the new German car was announced late last month, with numbers starting as low as $20,765 (including the $770 destination charge).  The low price tag applies to the base 170 hp 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, making it a tough contender against the ever-popular Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima mid-size sedans. Step up from the base model and choose from two other trim levels: the 2.0-liter TDI diesel engine with 140-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque for $26, 765, or the 3.6-liter V-6 engine with 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque for $29,765.

Transmission choices are up next:  The 2.5 will come standard with a five-speed manual and an optional six-speed automatic. The turbodiesel will be offered with a standard six-speed manual and VW’s six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic as optional, while the VR6 engine will only come with the DSG. Which is your favorite color? There are eight different hues to choose from.

The choice variety continues when choosing wheels, interior color schemes, and options, which can make the TDI jump to over $32k with the $4,330 SEL package if you wish to have a sunroof, the up-rated RNS 510 navigation system, and a 30GB hard disk. A fully loaded V-6 is not much more, at about $34k. With so many configurations available, let the fun begin! The 2012 Passat isn’t set to go on sale until September, but you can start building your dream Passat now.
