Can there truly ever be too much of a good thing? Porsche doesn’t think so. In fact, there are now 25 different flavors of the 911 presently available to consumers, thanks in part to the introduction of thenew 2012 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupe and Cabriolet.
No, you’re not confused — Porsche already offers the 911 in Carrera GTS form, but the automaker is nowoffering that same formula paired with all-wheel-drive. As is the case with its rear-drive siblings, the C4 GTS receives a new intake manifold, sports exhaust, and a few other mild tweaks to help eke additionalpower from the 3.8-liter flat-six engine. As a result, output is rated at 408 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque,which represents a 23-hp gain over a standard Carrera. On Carrera 4 GTS models, that power is sentthrough either a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.Opt for the later and the available Sport Chrono package, and Porsche says the car will sprint from 0-60mph in four seconds flat before hitting a top speed of 186 mph. Skip both options, and the C4 GTS willmake the same run in 4.4 seconds, and hit a top end of 188 mph.
Cosmetic upgrades mirror those applied to rear-wheel-drive GTS models, including a SportDesignfront apron, black side skirts borrowed the 911 GT2, and a blacked-out valence panel between therear tailpipes. Glossy black 19-inch RS Spyder wheels help emphasize the rear track of the all-wheel-drive model — which, like all all-wheel-drive 911s, is roughly 44 mm wider than rear-wheel-drive cars.Inside, Carrera 4 GTS models receive standard sport seats, which — like most of the interior — is wrappedin black alcantara. The premium material also covers to the three-spoke steering wheel, shifter, and handbrake lever.
Predictably, adding all-wheel-drive to the Carrera GTS does hike its price tag — in fact, it alonerepresents a $7100 premium over a standard GTS coupe. Pricing for the U.S.-spec 911 Carrera 4 GTScoupe starts at $111,150, while the cabriolet runs $121,050 (both figures include $950 in destinationcharges). Look for the all-wheel-drive GTS models to arrive in Porsche showrooms this fall.
