First Look: 2012 Maserati GranTurismo MC

At a brand-new, gleaming-white dealership in Manhattan’s Tribeca, Maserati took the wraps off the latest addition to its stable: the GranTurismo MC coupe.

The MC sits above the GranTurismo S as the sportiest iteration of Maserati’s coupe. The GranTurismo MC is similar to the European-market GranTurismo Stradale, but it is not an exact duplicate of that car. Unlike the Stradale, the MC retains its four-place seating.

Output of the 4.7-liter V-8 increases to 444 hp and 376 pound-feet of torque (from 440 hp and 361 lb-ft). Top speed creeps up to 185 mph, and the claimed 0-to-60 time is 4.8 seconds. As in the GranTurismo S, the six-speed automatic transaxle gets MC-Shift controls with paddles and the ability to do rev-matching downshifts. The engine’s racier exhaust note is trumpeted by a lightweight exhaust system with dual outlets that exit in the center of the rear diffuser.

The Skyhook active damping system is replaced by a single-rate dampers (although it can be specified as an option), and that change together with thicker anti-roll bars creates a suspension that is 16 percent stiffer at the front and 32 percent stiffer at the rear, and fractionally lowers the car’s ride height. Special lightweight 20-inch wheels are wrapped in Pirelli PZero Corsa tires, size 255/35ZR20 (front ) and 295/35ZR20 (rear).

Exterior highlights of the MC include an aluminum hood with functional vents, restyled front fenders, a large front splitter, and a trunk lid spoiler. The interior features unique seats, a standard Alcantara headliner, and no-charge carbon-fiber trim.

Pricing was not announced, but buyers for whom price is no object can order their MC now; deliveries will be in late summer.
