2012 Honda Civic Si Pace Car at Upcoming IndyCar Race

/strong>The next IZOD IndyCar Series race takes place in Toronto today where the new 2012 Honda Civic Si will make its official pace car debut.  Honda Performance Development (HPD), the automakers racing arm took charge of performing light modifications and heavy decal treatment on the ninth-gen Civic.

HPD is the sole provider of high-performance V-8 engines for the IndyCar Series, but it decided to leave the Si pace car’s new 2.4-liter, 201-hp inline-four cylinder untouched. Instead, HPD made heavy modifications to the brakes including four-piston calipers, competition rotors, racing brake pads, and stainless steel brake lines. Other racing bits include Enkei alloy wheels, Firestone Firehawk tires, Sparco seats, four-point racing harnesses, a Honda body kit and wild decal treatment.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Johnny Rutherford will pilot the Civic, which is the second Honda commissioned to pace car duty this race season.

Last March, a Honda FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell car was used for the Honda Grand Prix in St. Petersburg, Florida. The FCX also made appearances at the Firestone Indy Lights races, Acura Sports Car Challenge, and the Festival of States Parade.
