As we learned from GM’s press release regarding its sales last month, Saab’s next-generation 9-5 is still scheduled to be released despite parent GM’s cash woes. Speaking to a Dutch magazine, Knut Simonsson, Saab’s director of Global Brand and Sales, has given a timetable for the new sedan’s release.
According to Simonsson, the 9-5 is 99 percent finished. It is currently undergoing winter testing, and sales will begin after its debut at the Frankfurt auto show this September. A replacement for the 9-5 sedan will appear sometime in 2010.
Simonsson also talked about the future of the Swedish automaker. Now that GM has promised to give the brand its own budget, Saab wants to become the “Apple of car brands”. It could mimic Apple by having a small market share but appearing to be much bigger, Simonsson said. It would be a “special brand for entrepreneurs, dentists, doctors and agency people”.
