It was only a matter of time before Mercedes-Benz officially revealed the S63 AMG and S65 AMG. The two cars were accidently revealed on the company’s German consumer site last week.
The official release contains the same powertrain information that we brought you last week. The S63 AMG will feature the same 6.2-liter V-8 making 518 horsepower and mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. Top of the line S65 AMG models are fitted with the 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 that makes 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque as well as a five speed automatic transmission. Both engines have been tweaked to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 3 percent.
One new item mentioned was the standard torque vectoring brake that applies the brakes briefly to slow the inside wheels for more precise cornering. The large sedan’s cornering ability is further enhanced by the direct-steer system. This system varies the steering ratio based on the steering angle for even more responsive cornering.
Both AMG models are available with a long list of standard and available safety equipment. The list includes: ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection system, adaptive highbeam assist, lane keeping assist, and the PRE-SAFE brakes. New infotainment systems are offered and include the latest version of Comand interface and the new SPLITVIEW display that shows different content for driver and passenger simultaneously.
Buyers can add options available from the AMG performance studio including 20-inch double spoke forged wheels with 255-series tires in the front and 275-seires tires in the rear. Customers can also order trim elements in carbon/piano lacquer and AMG floor mats.
Europeans will get their chance to own the S-class AMG model of their choice in June 2009. North American markets will get their shot at the new saloons a few months later.
