The Problem: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had previously investigated reports of the Jeep Wrangler catching fire, and now Jeep has issued an official recall. For 2010, the company changed the location of the Wrangler’s catalytic converter to meet emissions requirements. However, due to the design of an underbody skid plate, debris could accumulate near the converter. Though the owner’s manual warns drivers to clear the skid plate, failing to do so could lead debris to be heated by the catalyst and catch fire. Jeep has received at least 14 reports of fires due to this problem.
The Fix: Jeep will recall the affected models of Wrangler and replace the skid plate with a skid bar, which was implemented as standard equipment in late 2010 to help save weight in the SUV. This design also prevents excessive debris build-up near the hot catalytic converter.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 67,872 models of the 2010 Jeep Wrangler equipped with automatic transmissions.
