2009 Audi A4 Allroad Quattro Spied

Although we haven’t seen it in North America since 2005, Audi‘s Allroad Quattro off-road wagon continues to thrive in Europe. Judging by these spy photos, it may continue to do so – albeit with a major platform change.

Since its introduction in 2002 and subsequent redesign in 2006, the Allroad Quattro has always been based on the A6 Avant. The new car, however, is expected to switch to the smaller A4, which was recently revised for 2009. Our spies caught a prototype, showing a new A4 complete with a higher ride height, large wheels, and grey fender flares – all typical Allroad cues.

What’s noticeably missing, however, is the wagon body. Though some suggest an Allroad sedan could be in the works, we’re thinking Audi simply wanted to keep the new A4 Avant shape – which wasn’t unveiled when this mule was built – under wraps as much as possible.

Sources claim the new A4 Allroad could be unveiled as early as next year. If so, don’t look for it to come stateside. Dismal sales of the original Allroad in North America triggered the development of the Q7 SUV. Also, the soon-to-launch Q5 – which also uses the A4’s mechanicals – is more suited for American tastes.
