2008 Scion Hako Coupe Concept

With the release of the new xB and the xD last summer, Scion‘s tC coupe is now the oldest model in the lineup, so the company’s thoughts no doubt are turning to a successor. If the Hako coupe concept is an early indication of Scion’s thinking, we’d urge the brand’s management to think again.

Quoted in his own press release, Scion vice president Jack Hollis says, “Polarizing style fits well with our line-up. And of course we love a good box.” You may have gone beyond “polarizing” with this one, Jack. Sure, we love a good box too – like, say, the original xB – but this is not a good box. This looks like the bastard love child of a Chrysler PT Cruiser and a Ford Model A.

Once you get past the exterior, you find a cabin that plays to the Scion target customer by using a video game theme. A trackball controls the audio-visual system (with two monitors!) and the shifter is shaped like a joystick.

Video cameras mounted below the A-pillars capture the passing scene and project it onto additional monitors inside, to record your road trip. That might be a neat idea for the generation that likes to record everything, but unless the Hako gets a radical restyling, those cameras might capture an awful lot of bystanders’ pointing and laughing.
