The Mercedes-Benz GL-class was supposed to replace the G-class–the twenty-six-year-old box we know and sorta love. But the G will soldier on, so the GL, an M-class-based seven-seater, will be an addition to the lineup. Powering the full-size SUV is a 325-hp, 4.7-liter V-8 teamed with a seven-speed manu-matic and full-time four-wheel drive. An off-road package adds a low-range transfer case and locking center and rear differentials, but we doubt the GL will match the mountain goat-like abilities of the Austrian-built G-class.
