Although the Wrangler JT is being shown at SEMA, it actually was finished several months early, so the JT had its coming out party on the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah – fitting for such an off-road-ready vehicle.
Jeep builds a version of this truck for the U.S. military, but what’s new here is the open pickup bed. The JT uses the chassis of the four-door Wrangler. The cargo box is just over five feet long. At the rear is a production Wrangler swing-out tailgate. The cab’s interior is pretty standard, and the roof (adapted from a two-door Wrangler’s) is removable.
Originally, the spare tire was mounted in the cargo bed, but it has since been moved to a rear-mounted carrier from Mopar accessories. Solid steel, 17-inch “milk truck”wheels are shod with 35-inch tires. The body is lifted three inches and the Mopar accessory front bumper is made of heavy plate steel. Of the design, Mark Allen, chief of the Jeep and Dodge Truck design studios, says: “It’s very simple, which I think a Jeep should be.” The color is called Hearing Aid Beige – not one that’s likely to be seen on any other car at SEMA. “It’s the anti-bling,” says Allen. Considering the level of excess at the SEMA show, that’s likely to make the JT a real standout.
