2006 Ford Truck, Old Hondas Top List of Stolen Vehicles in 2011

Older model Hondas continue to catch car thieves’ eyes, reveals the National Crime Information Center’s report of the 10 most stolen vehicles in the U.S. Sitting in third place is the newest vehicle on the list, a 2006 Ford full-size truck.

For calendar year 2011, the 1994 Honda Accord and 1998 Honda Civic were the two most stolen cars reported in the U.S., which doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The 1994 Accord and 1995 Civic topped the NICB’s list last year. Rounding out the 2011 top three is the 2006 Ford full-size truck, followed by the 1991 Toyota Camry and 2000 Dodge Caravan. While it seems foreign brands are the most likely to be stolen, the rest of the list is split between foreign and domestic brands.

Chevrolet and Dodge pickups are also popular domestic targets among car thieves, as is the 2002 Ford Explorer. Though the NICB reports car theft has not been this low since 1967, the agency has seen an increase in the number of newer cars being stolen. The NICB bases its findings on information on vehicle thefts that law enforcement send to the National Crime Information Center.

“Today’s vehicle thieves are typically professional criminals who have figured out how to get the key code for a specific vehicle, have a replacement key made, and steal the vehicle within a matter of days,” said NICB president and CEO Joe Wehrle.
