Porsche Company Overview
Porsche, or Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG or Porsche AG, was founded by engineer Ferdinand Porsche in 1931.
The first Porsche was the Porsche 64. It is also known as the Volkswagen Aerocoupe, Type 64 and Type 64K10, since it was built from the Volkswagen Beetle. (Porsche is credited to building the first Volkswagen.) The 356, though, is usually considered the first true Porsche being the first vehicle sold under the company.
The 356 successors, the 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder, helped cement the automaker's reputation as a builder of true sports cars. Others include the 956, 959, and 944. The original 911, one of the company's most

The 356 successors, the 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder, helped cement the automaker's reputation as a builder of true sports cars. Others include the 956, 959, and 944. The original 911, one of the company's most famous models, was launched in 1964.
In 1997, Porsche debuted another well-known car, the Boxster. The automaker finally joined (some say succumbed) to the SUV craze of the late '90s when it introduced the Porsche Cayenne SUV in 2002. Recently, the automaker has announced it plans to release a hybrid version of the SUV sometime in the next couple of years.
Both Porsche and Volkswagen have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship since the company's founding. In 2005, Porsche purchased a 18.65 percent stake in its partner; that number rose to 30.9 percent in 2007. Speculation at first ran rampant that the small company planned to take over its larger partner; Porsche explained it was trying to prevent others from acquiring VW. The European Union is supposedly looking into the matter.
