Infiniti Company Overview
Infiniti was founded in 1989 by Nissan Motor Co. as its luxury brand of cars in the U.S. For model year 1990, it debuted two vehicles, the M30 coupe and the Q45 full-sized sedan, in what is considered one of the more "odder" marketing campaigns. Later, in 1997, it would release the QX4 SUV, one of the first SUVs specifically aimed at the luxury segment.

Later, in 1997, it would release the QX4 SUV, one of the first SUVs specifically aimed at the luxury segment.
Image issues and product quality plagued Nissan's luxury marque for most of its existence. Developed as a rival against German automakers BMW and Mercedes as well as perennial competitors Toyota (Lexus) and Honda (Acura), Infiniti found itself trailing them all with its vehicles either being underpowered (G20), oddly designed (J30), or targeted at the wrong segment (again the G20). Many analysts point to Nissan's financial issues at that time as the leading contributor to Infiniti's problems.
The G35, introduced in 2003, led the brand's turnaround. The sporty sedan (a coupe is also available), which won the 2003 Motor Trend Car of the Year award, suddenly brought the marque back to the public's attention as an alternative to BMW's immensely popular 3-Series. The FX crossover, the 2003 replacement to the QX4, furthered cemented Infiniti's position as a provider of sporty, luxurious vehicles thousands of dollars less expensive than the Germans.
Infiniti continues to expand its vehicle line. Besides refreshed versions of its QX45 SUV and G35 sedan, it introduced an all-new Infiniti M last year. Infiniti also debuted the new G37 coupe at the New York Auto Show this year as well as the EX Concept crossover. The brand is also expanding into the European market sometime in or after 2008.
