The big news at Hyundai this year is the all-new, mid-size Sonata, which made its North American debut in Detroit. Built in Montgomery, Alabama, the Sonata will be the first Hyundai assembled in the United States, following the trend of a handful of foreign automakers finding a home on American soil. Arguably the best-looking Hyundai ever built (which actually isn't saying much), the Sonata will have an option list including safety items like side curtain air bags and traction control and luxuries such as satellite navigation and park distance control. Base power comes from a 158-hp 2.4-liter in-line four with the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, but a 230-hp, 3.3-liter V-6 and five-speed automatic make for a more notable powertrain. It is getting increasingly difficult for the competition to ignore Hyundai, and the Sonata should provide the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord with some serious competition. 2006 Hyundai Sonata Front Passenger Side View
