Enthusiasts across the land depressed by the ever increasing curb weight and dimensions of new vehicles can breathe easy today. The 2010 Cadillac SRX is actually a little smaller than the car it replaces, and it boasts some impressive new technology under the hood.
Cadillac isn't hiding the fact that the new SRX is aimed right at the {{{Lexus RX350}}}. The 2010 Cadillac SRX gives up cargo capacity, legroom, third-row seats, and rear-wheel drive to gain better looks, more sumptuous appointments, and more fuel-efficient engines. However, the SRX doesn't have a hybrid option in the lineup, which prevents it from challenging the entire RX line. GM has the technology to make this platform a hybrid (as suggested with 2008's Prevoq concept), so perhaps that option will arrive down the road.
There are two engine choices for the SRX; a 3.0-liter V-6 that uses direct injection to produce 260 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, or a 2.8-liter, turbo-charged V-6 that produces 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. These are the smallest engines offered by Cadillac in North America, but they return some impressive preliminary fuel economy figures: Caddy expects the 3.0-liter to return a highway fuel economy figure in the mid-20's, which is a significant jump from the previous SRX. Both engines use a six-speed automatic transmission. Buyers have a choice of front- or electronic all-wheel drive. The awd system can split torque front and rear, and also between the rear wheels thanks to an electronic limited slip.
Inside, the typical Cadillac luxury appointments abound. The optional pop-up navigation unit is borrowed from the CTS, hand-sewn leather covers the dash, and there is an optional dual-screen rear entertainment system. Other Cadillac signature touches include vertical headlights that 'bend' with the steering, chrome fender vents, and 18- or 20-inch wheels.
Though it's gunning for RX owners, we can't help but wonder if the SRX will woo former Escalade owners as well. The economy may force them to downsize, but who says they should give up any social status in the process?
