2008 Holden Coupe 60 Concept

Holden is celebrating 60 years of Australian-built cars with this concept based on its VE sedan. If you squint hard enough, it's possible to imagine a Pontiac G8 coupe.

The Australians started with the four-door VE, which forms the basis of the new G8 sedan, and shortened it by a little over two inches. The Coupe 60's wheelbase is identical to that of the sedan.

Underhood lurks a 6.0-liter V-8 that's mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, presumably the same setup as the VE and G8. Unlike in the sedans, however, this engine is tuned for E85 ethanol fuel. No power numbers have been mentioned.

The coupe gets a more aggressive look with its side-exit exhaust, front splitter, and rear diffuser. The interior layout matches that of the four-door, while materials and details have been given an upgrade. We especially like the flat-bottom steering wheel and red seat accents on the carbon-fiber buckets. The four-point racing harnesses might be overkill.

Given the near-production look inside and out, there's a good chance Holden will build this coupe. In order for us to see it here it would effectively have to be greenlit twice - once as a Holden and then again for Pontiac. This car looks to be what the revived GTO could and should have been.
