2008 Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder

By David Gluckman

Porsche has announced a special edition Boxster to commemorate its 1960 entry in the 12 Hours of Sebring. That year, Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien drove a Type 718 RS 60 Spyder to victory.

The Boxster RS 60 Spyder is based on the S version of Porsche's mid-engined convertible and mimics the design of the race-winning Type 718. The changes are mostly cosmetic, with the exception of a tweaked exhaust which nets an eight horsepower increase over stock, bringing the total to a healthy 303. Porsche's Active Suspension Management is standard.

The special edition car is bathed in GT Silver Metallic paint accented by red taillight lenses and a black windshield surround. The front bumper is from Porsche's SportDesign line, as are the nineteen-inch wheels.

The driver's view ahead has been improved by the removal of the hood over the gauge cluster. The instruments have also been set wider apart compared to the standard Boxster's. Gears are selected with a shifter knob unique to the car.

The top and leather interior are offered in Carrera Red, matching the hue used on the original. A dark grey interior paired with a black top is also available for the non-purist. Occupants strap in with silver seat belts regardless of interior choice.

The car's official debut will occur in March at the 2008 New York Auto Show. The price is set at $64,900 and less than 800 of the 1960 examples to be built are destined for North America.
