Audi plans to add this five-passenger crossover to tuck in below the Q7. The Q5 gets its bones from the next Audi A6 sedan; think of it as a taller (and slightly heavier) take on the A6 Allroad wagon. Exterior styling will resemble that of the Q7, complete with that vehicle's high beltline and athletic stance.
Powerplant choices should include a range of four- and six-cylinder engines, although VW's narrow-angle V-6 will most likely be saved for use in the upcoming Porsche Roxster, which will share the Q5's architecture. A diesel option also is probable. Transmission choices will include a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic. As with all Audi "Q" models, Quattro all-wheel drive will be standard.
AND A CROSSOVER IN EVERY POT: Audi is working backward as it fleshes out its lineup of SUVs and crossovers. The Volkswagen Tiguan-derived Q3 is next, and a smaller Q1 is rumored, too, leading us to wonder when - if? - the niche-filling madness will end. The Q5 might do well in the U.S. market, but we just can't bring ourselves to get that excited about it.
