Late this year Mitusbishi will begin rolling out its all-EV Mitsubishi i -- the first true challenger to the Nissan Leaf (although the Chevy Volt camp may disagree). When it hits U.S. showrooms, the Mitsu i’s range is expected to be in the 65-90 mile area.

Mitsubishi is determined to make an impression on consumers with its 2011 Outlander and Outlander Sport. After setting five Guinness world records in 24 hours in freezing temperatures, the company feels the dynamic duo is ready to take on the windy roads of the Andes Mountains in South America.

Drive a new car off the dealership lot in 2011 and no matter the make or model, you're almost certainly in a car that's safe, reliable, and competent on the road. We live in a time in which "bad cars" are practically extinct, and the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a prime example of that. Mitsubishi's compact crossover is a brand-new vehicle with a design that's years fresher than many of the segment's stalwarts. Despite that, it stumbles to the back of the pack right out of the gate. There's nothing perilously wrong with this Mitsubishi, but neither does it really sell itself. While its long-term reliability is untested, the Outlander Sport definitely suffers from the perception of low quality. The cabin creaks and rattles, the suspension occasionally crashes and clunks, and the interior feels decidedly cheap. Engine vibrations are evident at higher rpms, which you'll often see in efforts to get this 3040-pound vehicle moving with 148 hp. All that is a shame, because the Outlander Sport steers nicely and looks pretty sharp among some stodgier competitors.

No, Rusty, this isn't an Evo, but Mitsubishi already offers something -- the Lancer Sportback Ralliart -- for those who want to mix hatchback practicality with sports-car handling. The Outlander Sport, however, is something different: a micro-sized crossover that manages to drive like a tall Lancer (which, mechanically speaking, it is).

Mitsubishi's U.S. sales have been slipping since 2007, and Osamu Masuko, president of Mitsubishi Motors, has a new plan to increase U.S. profitability through new model introductions, increased factory utilization, and a revamped dealership network.

Mitsubishi unveiled its entry-level crossover for the first time in the U.S. The company didn't refer to it by name, because that hasn't officially been announced yet, but from what we hear, it'll be called Outlander Sport when it goes on sale here in September of this year.

Summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander vehicles equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Additionally, Mitusbishi is recalling certain 2007-2012 Outlander vehicles that received replacement 6-speed automatic transmissions during servicing. The transmissions in these vehicles have insufficient clearance between the power steering pressure tube and the converter housing of the automatic transmission. As a result of the contact, the power steering pressure tube may develop a hole and leak power steering fluid.
Consequences
A power steering fluid leak could result in a loss of steering assistance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering pressure tube and return tube, free of charge. The recall began in August 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-006.

Summary
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander; 2009-2011 Lancer Sportback and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles. The affected vehicles, manufactured with 4B1 engines, have an engine pulley and belt arrangement for turning the alternator, the cooling fan and the power steering pump (if equipped). These pulleys may experience unusual wear and allow for belt detachment.
Consequences
If the drive belt detaches, the battery may discharge, resulting in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the drive belt with a rubber belt. Drive pulleys that are excessively worn will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 15, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-009.
