2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class

New For 2013

The C-class got a thorough refresh last year, headlined by the addition of a four-cylinder engine and a two-door body style. Accordingly, there are few changes this year for Mercedes’ smallest model. The new AMG Sports Package Plus bestows the C-class with a specially tuned exhaust, a sport interior with contrasting seatbelts, eighteen-inch wheels, and, on coupes, a revised front suspension.

Mercedes-Benz’s C-class covers a broad spectrum of power, equipment, and price. As a driver’s car, the C-class doesn’t deliver the same all-around balance that makes the BMW 3-series so great. However, Mercedes places a larger emphasis on luxury and refinement. Every C-class has a quiet cabin, a composed ride, excellent build quality, and an assertive but well-mannered powertrain. The C-class offers comfortable seats; a slick, three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel; and a 5.8-inch display that integrates HD Radio, Bluetooth, and a USB port. The downsized C250 achieves a 21/31 mpg fuel-economy rating, but its smallish displacement means it isn’t as potent as BMW’s 240-hp turbo four. The C350’s direct-injected 3.5-liter revs eagerly and accelerates quickly. Buyers who desire all-wheel drive can choose the C350 coupe or the C300 sedan, which uses a less-potent, 228-hp V-6. A smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic is standard, but it’s not quite as quick as the eight-speed gearboxes of some competitors. The proletarian C-class might cede some performance to the BMW 3-series, but for the C63 AMG, which packs a 6.2-liter V-8 that charges off the line with an authority that is absent in BMW’s M3. The BMW boasts a more neutral, tactile chassis, but the Mercedes is a different kind of fun on the track.

ABS; front, side, front pelvis, side curtain, and driver’s knee air bags; traction and stability control; tire-pressure monitors; and drowsiness alert are standard. Automatic high-beams, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, swiveling headlights, parking sensors, and rear side air bags are optional.

You'll like:

  • More refined than a 3-series
  • Excellent build quality
  • C63 AMG is as good as an M3

You won't like:

  • Nav system has a steep learning curve
  • Not as nimble as a 3-series

Mercedes Benz C Class Prototype Left Side 1
A 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan wearing less camouflage than we've seen before has been spotted along with another fully-covered prototype. The redesigned C-Class will be the fourth new or redesigned Mercedes sedan in the stable after the CLA-, E-, and S-Class four-doors arrive.

Life has not been kind to the three-pointed star lately. The A-Class was criticized for its poor packaging and the harsh ride, the B-Class for its bland design, the CLA-Class for being over-styled, the facelifted E-Class for not righting enough of the wrongs, and the new S-Class for courting ostentatious luxury. Next in line for their verdicts are the GLA-Class crossover (due in September) and the new C-Class range (due in March 2014) – the latter of which promises to be exceptional in more ways than one.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is slated to be revealed next year, but a new interview has given us a clearer idea on what to expect from the next C-Class range. Expect the small Mercedes to more closely mirror the plethora of variants offered by the BMW 3 Series in the future with the addition of a convertible, a diesel, and a hybrid.
2014 Mercedes Benz C Class Rear Side
If you pay attention to our monthly sales reports, you may have noticed that the Mercedes-Benz C-Class outsold the BMW 3 Series during the month of January. Benz is undoubtedly patting itself on the back, but the automaker is also hard at work on the next-gen 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, which could steal even more sales away from BMW thanks to new powertrains, added features, and new styling. We recently captured the C-Class on the streets, where the new sedan showed off more of its rear end.
2014 Mercedes Benz C63 AMG Edition 507 Coupe Front Three Quarter 3
While most AMG Mercedes-Benz cars use turbochargers to make their eye-popping horsepower numbers, the C63 AMG is one of only three models to make its power without forced induction. In case you thought the C63 AMG engine's future was unclear, AMG just released a new special edition C63 that uses some engineering witchcraft to tune the 6.2-liter V-8 all the way up to 507 horsepower.
