2015 Mazda 6

New for 2015

The Mazda6, which was redesigned for the 2014 model year, enters the 2015 model year relatively unchanged. Minor changes include illuminated power window switches with one-touch up/down for all doors, a number of feature updates, and a new exterior color option: Deep Crystal Blue.

Vehicle Overview

The Mazda6 is a midsize sedan that offers a manual or automatic transmission option, and combines fuel efficiency with fun driving dynamics. The Mazda6 fits above the Mazda3 as the largest sedan offered by the automaker.

Summary

The 2015 Mazda6 is powered by a 2.5-liter I-4 that can be paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission that will drive the front wheels. A technology package helps to improve fuel economy on models with the automatic, and the EPA-rates the Mazda6 for 25/37 mpg (city/highway) with the manual, 26/38 mpg with the automatic, and 28/40 mpg with the technology package equipped automatic. The i-ELOOP regenerative system (part of the technology package) charges a battery when the accelerator is released, allowing some systems to operate without a drain on the engine, which results in a 2-mpg gain over the standard automatic. Loaded Mazda6s will include features such as adaptive front HID headlights, heated front seats, Bluetooth with streaming audio, hands-free keyless access, LED daytime running lights, an 11-speaker Bose premium audio system, dual-zone climate control, and rain sensing windshield wipers.
Notable safety features include whiplash-reducing seat headrests, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist, traction control, stability control, blind-spot warning, cross-traffic alert, radar-controlled cruise control, lane-departure warning, automated city braking, forward obstruction warning, and high-beam warning.
The 2015 Mazda6 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and is considered a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 Mazda6 is a sports sedan at heart, but one that gets class-leading fuel economy too. The engine is a lively, and efficient, powerplant that made even better by the excellent transmission. The six-speed automatic is designed to have less slip from the torque converter (better throttle response), and the control module is programmed for quicker kickdowns, so there’s not as much waiting when you really want to be passing.
In a Driven review of a 2014 Mazda6 we commented on a Texas to Michigan trip we made in the new car, saying, “We learned that the Mazda6's good looks never get tiresome, and neither does its dynamic personality. We learned that the interior is still a black hole of visual interest despite the redesign. And we learned that as you pass a big rig in the fast lane, the radar sensor for the cruise control always gets confused by the towering flanks of the truck and abruptly slows the car.” While the interior is plain, we did admit it was simple and functional. This extended to the navigation system as well, with maps that lacked detail, but turn-by-turn directions that never let us down.

Report: Mazda 6 Coupe in the Works?

Now, a report from Auto Express suggests that a sportier and more luxurious Mazda 6 coupe variant could be in the product pipeline to help the Japanese automaker broach the premium marketplace.
