2010 Mazda CX-7
For its size, the Mazda CX-7 is a sporty, athletic SUV. It won't be mistaken for a sports car, but it maintains good control over body roll even when the going gets rough. It retains as much of a sports car like feel that a SUV can attain and is considered to be one of the more visually appealing models available in this segment.

There are several trim options available on the CX-7. The Base I SV and I sport models are equipped with a 2.5 liter four cylinder making 161 HP and 161 Ft. – Lbs. of torque. This is mated to a 5 speed automatic transmission. The higher end versions the S touring and S Grand Touring model offer a turbo charged, 2.3 liter four cylinder making 244 HP and 258 FT. – LBS. of torque. This more powerful engine is available in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive as well as.

Options abound on this model. Leather seating, xenon headlights, sunroof, heated mirrors and 18 or 19 inch wheels are just a sample of the options available.
First introduced for 2007, the Mazda CX-7 was on the vanguard of several trends among crossovers, but one might ask: Where’s the payoff?

I forgot that the CX-7 is powered by the same 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that was in the short-lived Mazdaspeed6 sport sedan. This engine's peaky, nonlinear character was one of the reasons that sedan didn't find an audience. It's better here in the CX-7 crossover, but it's not Mazda's best current powertrain effort. You can learn to live with it, to modulate the accelerator pedal, and to use the manual gate for the six-speed automatic, but all told, it's somewhat lacking.

It was a chilly 14 degrees on the evening I drove the CX-7. The leather seats were frigid and transmitted the chill straight through the seat of my pants. So I turned the seat heaters on full blast and fiddled with the rest of the controls - mirrors, steering wheel, radio - to get them set the way I like. By the time I was done with that, the seats had already started to heat up nicely, and the chill was waning. So - at least the seat heaters work quite well in the CX-7, thank you Mazda.

The turbocharger adds a little extra zoom to the CX-7's recipe, but I still prefer the normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder we tested earlier this year in a front-wheel-drive CX-7. It was not only less expensive and less peaky than this Grand Touring, but the SV I still carried some nice features, and remarkably, wasn't any less sharp or fun to drive.

I'm still not sure I like the Mazda's facelift of the CX-7. The hood and windshield follow the same angle giving the front end more of a minivan than a sport-ute look. From the inside though, these proportions make the CX-7 easy to drive. The large windshield, low cowl, and short hood and front overhang combine to create an expansive view of the road ahead. And, the small, triangular side windows forward of the rear-view mirrors seem unnecessary at first but the additional light they let it really brightens up the mostly black interior and visually shortens the deep dash.

The turbocharged CX-7 didn't blow my mind, nor did I hate the time I spent behind the wheel. The exterior is somewhat stylish, and it has a nice interior with leather seating, heated seats, and Mazda's signature tiny navigation screen. But the CX-7 felt underpowered with the noisy 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine, and the gas mileage isn't very impressive either with 17 city and 23 highway.

The CX-7 is impressively sporty for being a small, affordable crossover. Body motions are kept in check through turns, but the ride is also comfortable. Steering is light, but predictable and communicative. Power, however, is downright dismal with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder. Of course, performance isn't that different than in a four-cylinder Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, or Toyota RAV4, but of those cars, this Mazda feels like it's the car that would make the best use of extra power. Those who want more thrust can opt for the 244-hp turbocharged four with a starting price of $26,550.

I didn't put in much time behind the wheel of the CX-7, but during the abbreviated time I spent there I was greatly preoccupied by the fact that, no matter how much I adjusted it, I couldn't find a comfortable position for the driver's seat. That may sound like a superficial complaint, but when you test drive a car, you'd never consider one that felt as uncomfortable as this CX-7 did to me.

Mazda's torque-filled 2.5-liter I-4 impresses me in the likes of the 3 and 6, but as my colleagues have noted, it simply runs out of steam in the heavier CX7. I was also a little disappointed with the five-speed automatic in this application -- I was impressed with how quickly other Mazda gearboxes responded to throttle input, but this one required a good stomp before instigating a downshift. In typical Mazda fashion, the suspension is tuned to quash most body roll, but it can be slightly stiff on larger expansion joints on Michigan freeways.
