A compact SUV and “some sort of pickup truck” to help fill out a full lineup of electric vehicles covering a wide array of price points is central to CEO Elon Musk’s much-anticipated “Master Plan Part Deux” for Tesla, which was released on the upstart automaker’s website Wednesday evening.

Tesla also plans to launch a car-sharing program to “enable your car to make money for you when you’re not using it,” which makes it potentially an Airbnb more than an Uber for the company’s widening base of loyal and enthusiastic customers.

The compact SUV—an entry into hottest segment in the business and potential companion model for the Model 3—and pickup will be part of Tesla’s plan to “expand the electric vehicle line to address all segments.” Musk’s Plan, Part Deux, also promises a well-integrated solar roof panel for electric vehicles that presumably would help charge, or fully charge, these cars and SUVs as they’re being driven in daylight.

2017 Tesla Model 3 rear three quarter

Toyota has such a panel available for the Prius in some markets, but hasn’t made the expensive option available in North America, yet.

Musk recently announced plans for Tesla to buy SolarCity, the solar panel company he helped found and of which he is the chairman. The purchase of SolarCity is subject to vote by Tesla’s shareholders.

As autonomous technology matures, Musk says, Teslas will have hardware to provide “fail-operational capability,” allowing the car to safely drive itself even if certain systems fail. Tesla’s AutoPilot system came under intense scrutiny following a fatal Model S crash in Florida.

Musk says he’s “deploying partial autonomy now, rather than waiting until some point in the future” because “when used correctly, it is already significantly safer than a person driving by themselves (sic) and it would therefore be morally reprehensible to delay release simply for fear of bad press or some mercantile calculation of legal liability.”

Watch this space for more news and analysis of Elon Musk’s “Master Plan, Part Deux” for Tesla Motors in the coming days.

Following the release of the base Tesla Model S 60 sedan earlier last month, the U.S. automaker revealed a bargain-basement variant of its Model X SUV, carrying a $74,000 price tag.

Like the Model S 60, the new Model X 60D packs the same battery and motors as the more expensive Model X 75D. In the 60D, the battery is limited to 60 kWh by software, giving the 60D a range of 200 miles, 37 miles off of the 75D’s 237 mile range.

As the name suggests, the 60D retains a dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, allowing the SUV to crack 60 mph in the same 6.0 seconds on its way to a top speed of 130 mph.

200 miles of range isn’t enough for some people’s needs, so Tesla will unlock the full 75 kWh potential of the battery for an additional $9,000. If buyers want the full 237 mile range immediately, they might be better off purchasing a Model X 75D outright.

The 60D’s 200 mile range is slightly less than the Model S 60’s 210 mile range, likely thanks to the dual-motor setup and a heavier curb weight.

Deliveries for the Model X 60D should begin in late September.

As the number of electric vehicles in the U.S. continues to rise, the current infrastructure of quick-charge stations will be overloaded, especially with the potential arrival of the more affordable Tesla Model 3. Now, a new report from The Washington Post outlines how Tesla is discreetly in talks with a major gas station chain to perhaps bring the Tesla Supercharger to your local filling station.

Speaking to The Washington Post, Sheetz’s executive vice president of petroleum supply Michael Lorenz confirmed the company is discussing the implementation of Tesla charging stations with the automaker. “We’ve had discussions with them about putting their chargers in our stores,” Lorenz told the Post. “We haven’t done anything yet, but we’re continuing those discussions.” The Post reported that Tesla declined to comment, but did confirm it is in the process of “courting” restaurants and gas stations for implementation of chargers.

Located primarily in the eastern region of the U.S., Sheetz stores are much more than a simple fuel station. Sheetz offers a stock of food, snacks, and products that are higher quality than regular convenience store fare, with more seating areas and services offered. This would be the ideal location for Tesla drivers, who would be able to sit down and relax while their vehicle is charging.

Sheetz already operates eight locations with general-purpose charging stations for both Tesla and non-Tesla vehicles.

We’ve seen a Tesla race a Ferrari, a Boeing 737, a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, and even witnessed a Tesla Model X simultaneously stomping an Alfa Romeo 4C on a drag strip while towing another 4C. Now, a Model S claimed a new course record for a production electric vehicle at this year’s Pikes Peak hillclimb.

Initially, according to a report from Electrek, the competing Tesla was believed to hold a significantly smaller battery pack for the run, far removing it from the production class. In an interview with AutoEvolution, driver and owner Blake Fuller confirmed there were more unnamed upgrades than meets the eye. Aside from stripping the interior of seats, carpets, sound deadening, and amenities, Fuller claims the P90D used to reach the summit in a record-setting 11 minutes, 28 seconds packed “more efficiency.”

In effect, this likely indicates the stock Model S software was reprogrammed to return more power, at the expense of range and reliability.

Regardless, this is an impressive feat. The Model S beat the existing record by just over a minute, a title previously held by a Zero Electric motorcycle. Fuller and the electric supersedan finished 65th overall.

While this might be impressive for a production vehicle, Pikes Peak is no stranger to electric propulsion. Unhindered by the ill-effects of the lofty altitude, electric race cars make up a large portion of the hillclimb roster, including a seriously-cool Acura NSX EV Concept that took second place in the Electric Modified class.

Tesla Motors has tendered an offer to buy SolarCity with plans to provide integrated solar-panel-powered charging systems for the company’s customers, in a deal worth $2.5 billion to $3 billion, according to Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO is a shareholder in both Tesla Motors and SolarCity.

“The world does not lack for auto companies,” Musk said during a phone-in news conference Tuesday. “The world lacks for sustainable energy companies.”

If shareholders (excluding Musk) of both Tesla Motors and SolarCity approve the deal, the solar-powered charging units could be available as early as next year, Musk said. He would not estimate how long it might take to complete the deal, which first is subject to due diligence by both companies. Musk is also chairman of SolarCity’s board of directors.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk 3

“We would be the world’s only vertically integrated energy company offering end-to-end clean energy products to our customers,” reads Tesla Motors’ offer to SolarCity. “This would start with the car you drive and the energy that you use to charge it, and would extend to how everything else in your home business is powered. With your Model S, Model X or Model 3, your solar panel system, and your Powerwall all in place, you would be able to deploy and consume energy in the most efficient and sustainable way possible, lowering your costs and minimizing your dependence on fossil fuels and the grid.”

With the proposed purchase, Tesla Motors would be able to deliver a new car, a solar panel system, and its Powerwall charger all in one step, Musk said. Many Tesla owners currently count on electric recharging from power utilities using such fossil fuel as coal, which can make an electric car’s upstream emissions worse than those from a conventional gasoline- or diesel-powered car.

Unlike Tesla Motors, SolarCity’s stock value has struggled since its 52-week high of $61.72 per share. SolarCity’s stock fell 69 cents per share Tuesday to $21.19. Asked whether Tesla seeks to buy the company because it’s undervalued, Musk insisted the proposed purchase comes from “a desire to integrate products—that’s really the main reason for it.”

SolarCity reportedly carries $3 billion in debt, but “current revenues” are sufficient to pay it off, says CEO Lyndon Rive. Tesla Motors shares fell 9 cents Tuesday, to $219.61.

Is a Tesla Model S a boat? We’ve known the Tesla has a propensity for “ludicrous” acceleration for quite some time, but the question of whether or not the car was indeed a boat has long escaped the most brilliant minds of our time. Thankfully, one intrepid amateur scientist from Kazakhstan finally deciphered the enigma. The answer? Sort of.

A Tesla Model S owner was driving along before encountering a flooded section of a tunnel. A few cars had already become stuck, but the driver of the Tesla didn’t seem too bothered by the situation and proceeded through the windshield-deep water. The car then appeared to stop, at which time, it began to float. Rather than panic about your six-figure electric car suddenly becoming a boat, the driver laid on the accelerator which propelled the car forward like an inboard motor would on a boat.

Once the water became shallow enough for the wheels to touch, the car gripped, and the driver and passenger who recorded the whole ordeal went about their business. The recording has since gone viral; you’d think the Tesla should have sunk like a stone. Elon Musk, the CEO and creator of Tesla weighed in on the subject through Twitter stating, “We *def* don’t recommend this, but Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time. Thrust via wheel rotation.”

So it seems that Musk knew that the Model S could indeed float, but has been keeping it secret. Probably due to fear foolish individuals thinking their electric car was indeed a successor to the gloriously imperfect Amphicar. For other Model S owners, again, Musk says Tesla doesn’t recommend it, so please, don’t try this at home.

After the launch of the Tesla Model X and the introduction of the hugely anticipated, and already successful, Model 3, Tesla released what amounted to be a mid-cycle refresh for the Model S. The primary draw was the new front fascia that resembled the rest of Tesla’s new lineup.

The more fluid design smoothed out the somewhat jarring front end. However, Tesla did not state whether previous generation Model S owners were able to receive the refresh. Thus, many felt left out. To satiate owners, and given that the architecture didn’t change, Unplugged Performance were able to copy the new fascia for those wishing to update their Tesla’s style.

Tesla Model S Refresh Unplugged Performance 5

For those unfamiliar with Unplugged Performance, the company is an aftermarket tuner that specializes in Teslas. According to the company, the refresh front fascia they’ve designed works with all Model S sedans produced from 2012 to 2016 and does not interfere with those equipped with AutoPilot, or interfere with the factory-installed jump start terminals in the front of the car’s nosecone.

Additionally, Unplugged Performance also performed aero and cooling testing and report that neither is affected by the refreshed front fascia. It doesn’t, however, come pre-painted, so customers will have to have the part painted to color-match the rest of their car. The refreshed front fascia costs $2,995, minus a $300 deposit made when ordered. For those that pre-order the refreshed unit before July 1, they’ll get a $500 discount.

Tesla Model S Refresh Unplugged Performance 2

The company also offers a host of other personalization and performance products to help customers individualize their Tesla Model S as they see fit, including; a carbon fiber seat back, custom 21-inch BBS wheels, front and rear diffusors, and a carbon fiber trunk spoiler. The company is also working on increasing the car’s performance and range with upgraded braking, new suspension components, along with other items.

We spoke to Ben Shaffer, the President of Bulletproof Automotive and Unplugged Performance, a few years ago and he stated that “We’d like to have a well-rounded car that’s a tuner solution for Tesla like AMG is for Mercedes.” Shaffer stated more recently, “Our clients represent the most passionate Tesla owners on the planet; we’ve earned their support year after year by continually creating products that make their cars distinctively special….We aspire for every client to have the pride of owning cars that stand apart at the supercharger rather than simply aspiring to fit in.”

If you have your heart set on an affordable Tesla, but don’t have the patience to wait for the release of the Tesla Model 3, a new entry-level variant of the evergreen Model S sedan was just revealed.

In reality, this isn’t really a new model. The 60-kWh variant of the Model S was discontinued last year, but has now re-emerged wearing a similar price tag and the visual updates introduced earlier this year.

Tesla claims the new base Model S will return 210 miles of range, and scuttle to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, silently rushing to a top speed of 130 mph. If all-wheel drive is a priority, buyers can opt for the dual-motor option, which Tesla says “will bring even more range and performance.”

Prices for the “new” Model S 60 begin at $66,000 for the rear-wheel drive model, and $71,000 for the dual-motor configuration. One interesting point to note, however, is if customers decide they need more range and power, Tesla will upgrade their 60-kWh battery pack to the 75-kWh specifications. Essentially, the only thing separating the Model S 60 from the 75-kWh is a fancy set of programs that limits battery output.

Configure the new Model S 60 here.

A new report from Automotive News revealed that Tesla may likely charge owners of the upcoming Model 3 to use its supercharger network. According to CEO Elon Musk, “free supercharging fundamentally has a cost,” during Tesla’s annual shareholders meeting at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif.

However, despite admitting that Model 3 owners may have to pay to use Tesla’s supercharging stations, Musk insists that they will remain cheaper than gasoline especially when it comes to long-distance drives. In order for Model 3 owners to charge at supercharger stations without a fee, they must purchase an unspecified package that Musk has yet to reveal pricing for.  Supercharger stations provide quick charging for Tesla vehicles and are able to give the cars 170 miles of range after 30 minutes of charging.

Tesla is currently investing heavily in its growth as the Model 3 gets closer to starting production. At its reveal this past March, Musk announced that the car will start at $35,000. Originally, Tesla had 400,000 preorders for the Model 3, but that number has since dropped to 373,000 due to cancellations and duplicates. Due to high demand, Musk has pulled forward a plan to build 500,000 cars per year to 2018, which is two years earlier than the original plan.

Model 3 deliveries are expected to start by late 2017 and the Gigafactory near Reno, Nev., is a critical piece in getting the car out on time with such a low price tag. Battery cell production at the Gigafactory starts at the fourth quarter of this year. Panasonic Corp., which is a supplier of battery cells for the Model S and Model X, and an investor in the Gigafactory will collaborate with Tesla in manufacturing new cylindrical battery cells that are 20 mm by 70 mm, replacing the current 18 mm by 65 mm unit.

A prank involving the Tesla Summon feature was bound to happen sooner or later and that’s exactly what one Model S owner has pulled off on his unsuspecting son.

The intended function of Tesla’s Summon feature allows owners to park or retrieve their car even if they’re not inside. This father, however, saw it as an opportunity to pull a good prank on his son, who apparently was unaware that their family’s Tesla was updated with the new feature.

The video, filmed by a GoPro camera hidden somewhere in the dash, begins with the son bucked in the passenger seat, fiddling with his smartphone. The Summon mode activates and the Tesla begins rolling out of the garage at which point the son begins to freak out. He looks around confused and yells for his daddy, who appears a few seconds later and opens the door before belting out a sinister laugh.

While the Summons feature was all fun and games in this situation, that wasn’t the case for an owner out of Utah who claims his parked Tesla went into Summons mode unprovoked, which then crashed into a flat-bed trailer truck. Tesla responded with data from the vehicle log, which apparently didn’t match up with the owner’s claim, KSL.com reports. Coincidentally, the automaker has since revised the Summons Feature to make it more fool-proof thanks to a new step requiring drivers to confirm the vehicle’s intended direction when the mode is in use.
