Our spy photographers have caught the next-generation Ram 1500 undergoing hot weather testing in Death Valley, Calif., and we gave us a glimpse at the new truck’s underpinnings thanks to some shots of the undercarriage and suspension bits. This particular prototype is likely a Ram 1500 Rebel judging by the Goodyear Wrangler off-road tires it’s wearing and what appears to be a slightly raised suspension.

The truck’s rear suspension features rear steel springs instead of the air springs found in non-off-road variants of the Ram 1500. Our spies also suggested that this Ram 1500 prototype was powered by the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 and appears to have a second tank for the diesel particulate cleaner, hinting at the possibility that a diesel-powered Ram 1500 Rebel could be in the cards for the next generation.

Expected to debut as a 2019 model, the next-generation Ram 1500 will likely retain its steel body rather than go aluminum-intensive like its chief rival, the Ford F-150. However, the truck will likely have a stiffer frame and feature more fuel-saving tech. In addition to the standard Rebel, Ram could be working on a more hardcore 1500 Rebel based on the TRX Concept from last year as its answer to the Ford F-150 Raptor. Along with some cosmetic changes, Ram’s Raptor rival could feature a powerful V-8 engine with more than 400 hp on tap. The Ram Rebel TRX Concept features a detuned 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 from the Dodge Challenger and Charger Hellcat that was rated at around 575 hp.

Not to be outdone by Ford and GM in the luxury pickup category, Ram has added a new top-trim level to its 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks. Arriving in dealerships later this year, 2018 Ram Limited Tungsten Edition models feature a host of luxurious appointments.

Based on the Limited trim, the new pickups receive a Tungsten Chrome grille, satin-painted wheels, blacked-out headlamps, and body-color-matched bumpers, mirrors, door handles, and running boards. Tungsten 1500 models add a sport hood.

Don’t let its tough exterior fool you because inside it’s all about pampering. Look for a Light Greystone suede headliner, real wood trim, and premium leather in Frost and Indigo hues. The models are also equipped with an air suspension, navigational radio, remote start, heated steering wheel, front ventilated and heated seats, heated rear seats, power adjustable pedals with memory, and an 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Tungsten models come in a variety of configurations, including 1500, 2500, and 3500 single- and dual-rear-wheel versions. It’s also available on Crew Cab and Mega Cab models, with four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive, and in short- or long-wheelbase form.

Prices for the 2018 Ram 1500 Limited Tungsten Edition will start at $56,515 when it goes on sale in the third quarter. For comparison, base 2017 Ram 1500s started at $27,890 and Limited models go for $54,270. Eight exterior colors will be available: Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal, Delmonico Red Pearl, Granite Crystal Metallic, Pearl White, True Blue Pearl, and Maximum Steel Metallic, a color only available on the 1500.

If you thought the Ram 1500 Rebel and Ram Limited pickups had enough appearance options, the truck manufacturer just announced some additional choices that should keep these trucks turning heads.

Delmonico Red is a new, no-charge seventh exterior color option for the 2017 Ram Rebel. The deep red color joins the available Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black, Flame Red, Granite Crystal Metallic and Mojave Sand colors. The color can be ordered with the Black Rebel appearance package, can come in two-tone (black lower panels), or monotone. The new paint option features a black and gray interior with all-black heated seats with “Rebel” embroidery and Light Slate Gray accent stitching that highlights the instrument panel, center console lid, doors, and seats. Additionally, bezels on the doors, center console, instrument panel, and gauge cluster trim rings have been anodized in black.

Last year, Ram brought the Rebel’s large R-A-M tailgate letters to the Limited trim offered on 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks, available in bright chrome. Those letters can now be ordered matched to a truck’s body color, including Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal, Delmonico Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, Maximum Steel Metallic, Pearl White, and True Blue colors. To further complement the monochromatic theme, the Limited models can now be ordered with new body-colored cab-length running boards that can be paired with above body-colored tailgate lettering. The body-colored running boards are also available on the Ram 1500 Night editions.

The Ram Rebel is an off-road-focused variant that features a factory lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow-hooks, air suspension, and other off-road goodies. The luxurious Ram Limited sports all-black leather seating, Black Argento interior wood trim, subtle stitching accents, pin-striping, billet port “RAM” grille, and the standard Active-air suspension system with five settings.

The 2017 Ram Rebel starts at $46,490 including destination and the Ram 1500 Limited with the monochromatic appearance package starts at $54,660 including destination. Both start arriving at dealerships starting May 2017. Body-colored R-A-M tailgate letters and running boards are available now as standalone options and have a price tag of $195 each. The Ram Rebel Night with running boards is $40,280 including destination.

First Drive: 2017 Ram Power Wagon http://www.automobilemag.com/news/first-drive-2017-ram-power-wagon/ http://www.automobilemag.com/news/first-drive-2017-ram-power-wagon/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2017 09:00:33 +0000 http://www.automobilemag.com/?p=1134935 Ram’s ultimate rig for the weekend off-road warrior

The post First Drive: 2017 Ram Power Wagon appeared first on Automobile Magazine.

]]>
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — My brain kept telling itself “7,000-pound trucks shouldn’t be able to do that” as it witnessed yet another 2017 Ram Power Wagon scamper up a series of steep, rocky hillsides at Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park with the poise and confidence of a (very fat) mountain goat.

Were this most any other truck, my brain would have been right: 20-foot-long, full-size trucks that weigh as much as the Power Wagon should not, in fact, able to do that. Especially with random automotive journalists behind the wheel, some of whom had never so much as seen a trail let alone wheeled up one before. But the Ram 2500-based Power Wagon is far from most trucks, and every last one of them made it up the fairly challenging rock path unscathed.

For starters, most trucks don’t come from the factory wearing 17-inch wheels with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires. The Jeep fanatics over at our sister publication JP Magazine put more than 12,000 miles on a set and found the Duratracs to be great “for a daily-driven weekend warrior” — a description that fits the Power Wagon to a tee. During our drive, traction issues only came up on a particularly soft and sandy uphill, where carrying enough speed going into the hill matters more than having the right tire. Road noise that can mistake your truck for an attacking German Stuka dive-bomber at freeway speeds is often a tradeoff one must make when adding capable off-road tires, but the Power Wagon’s Goodyears proved luxury car-quiet during our on-road drive.

2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon front three quarter 04

Ram left the regular 2500’s twin-piston 14.2-inch front and 14.1-inch rear brakes alone for the Power Wagon, but they’re about the only bit between the body and the ground that wasn’t updated in some form. In place of the standard Ram’s solid front and rear anti-roll bars are electronically disconnecting units, dubbed the “Smart Bar,” that can be disconnected with the push of a button in 4HI and 4LO at speeds of up to 18 mph. The Smart Bars provide the truck with extra articulation (up to 26 inches of it) while crawling off-road without sacrificing on-road stability.

Also contributing to the Power Wagon’s articulation capabilities is Ram’s so-called “Articulink,” which is an extra bushing in the front control arm that gives the solid front axle the ability to twist more over uneven terrain. The Power Wagon keeps the standard 9.25-in front axle, but its rear axle, measuring 11.5-in, is an inch thicker. The rear also receives stronger rear axle shafts, which measure 38 millimeters in diameter.

Keeping the axles attached to the Power Wagon’s body is a unique suspension consisting of a set of Bilstein shocks and revised coil springs that provide 2.3-inches of lift over stock. As a result, the Power Wagon boasts pretty impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles of 33.6, 26.2, and 23.5 degrees, respectively.

The retention of the coil spring rear setup ensured that the Power Wagon kept the Ram’s smooth on-road behavior that all but eliminates freeway hop, but the extra demands on the suspension reduce the truck’s work ability to that of a light duty truck. Maximum payload is limited to 1,510 pounds while towing capacity drops to 10,030 pounds — still more than plenty for a pair of dirt bikes in the bed and a toy hauler on the hitch.

In the middle of each axle is an electronically locking differential, with the front locker an industry exclusive (at least until the launch of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2). Without these lockers, which are operated with a simple dial on the center stack, the Power Wagon would just spin its loose wheels instead of making it up imbalanced rocky trails or sandy paths with the power of the planted ones, as an unlocked differential would send all power to the wheel that offers no resistance.

2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon front three quarter downhill

Sitting between the axles is the second-to-last key ingredient in the Power Wagon formula, the Borg-Warner BW 44-47 manual transfer case, which is operated the old fashioned way with a lever in the floor. In addition to switching modes between 2WD, 4HI, and 4LO, the transfer case works with the six-speed automatic and 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 to enable the Power Wagon’s Hill-descent control (HDC) system. HDC works only in 4LO and is controlled via the shift buttons on the gearshift lever, each press adding or subtracting 0.6 mph of speed. It worked exactly as promised when it was time to head down a steep hill and never made us feel like gravity was about to take matters into its own hands.

The experience was similarly comfortable on the way up the hill, with the eight-cylinder’s plentiful low-end torque — output peaks at 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, more than enough for road duty — keeping things moving steady as we climbed up the steep, sandy incline.

Last but certainly not least is the integrated Warn winch. Rated to pull 12,000 pounds, fitted with a 125-foot cable, and bolted directly to the frame, the Power Wagon’s winch will surely prove to be a useful tool for any frequent off-roader. Given the Power Wagon’s capabilities, it will most likely be used to rescue another wheeler, as was demonstrated to us with the aid of an exo-cage-equipped Toyota 4Runner. There’s always the chance you’ll turn a wheel wrong and will need to pull yourself out using a tree or another rig as an anchor. Getting a Power Wagon stuck may be no easy feat, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.

The only downside to the winch? It’s part of the reason why the Power Wagon is not available with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel I-6. There simply isn’t enough space behind the bumper for the diesel and its hardware with the winch in place. Alas.

2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon interior

All of this capability has been on offer since the current generation Power Wagon arrived in 2014 as all changes for 2017 are purely cosmetic. On the outside, these consist of a new grille that imitates the Ram 1500 Rebel’s, powdercoated front and rear bumpers, 1979 Dodge Macho Power Wagon-inspired side decals, and a 324-point font “Ram” badge on the tailgate accompanied by a large “Power Wagon” graphic. Inside, the seats receive Power Wagon logos on the bolsters and headrests and some different color combinations. It’s a mild freshening but give credit where credit is due, the 2017 Power Wagon does look significantly cooler than the 2014-2016 variant.

Given the myriad updates to the Power Wagon, you might be asking: “What’s the catch?” Well, thanks to advances in modern technology, there really isn’t one except the financial one. Today’s trucks are more comfortable and luxurious than ever before, so no creature comforts have to be sacrificed in the name of capability, but they also happen to be fairly expensive.

The 2017 Ram Power Wagon starts at $53,015. With the $4,995 “Leather and Luxury Group” option checked, the Power Wagon is no less luxurious than a Ram 2500 Laramie, receiving leather seats, a nine-speaker Alpine stereo, 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, heated front seats, and more. The Power Wagon can (and should) also be had with the Rambox for an extra $1,295, although with all the optional goods tacked on you’re looking at close to a $60,000 truck.

Those interested in just the off-road bits can order a Ram 2500 Tradesman 4×4 with the $7,950 “Power Wagon Package,” so long as they select the crew cab and short box — the only configuration the Power Wagon is offered in. The package also adds another $500 for the 6.4-liter engine option, bringing the Tradesman Power Wagon’s tag to $48,315 — still a bit pricey, but a decent discount over the full blown Power Wagon.

Regardless of how you decide to option up your Power Wagon, you’ll get a truck that you’ll be more than happy to use as weekday conveyance while you plan out your next off-road adventure knowing that you have one of the most capable factory rock-crawlers on the market. At least until the Jeep Wrangler pickup arrives.

Move over Ignition Orange, the 2017 Ram 1500 Sport gets another color option — radiant Copper Pearl. The new limited trim shade made its debut at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show.

The package includes a matching Cooper Pearl grille, performance hood with black decals, lots of special black badges, and it all rolls on 22-inch aluminum wheels.

“The Ram 1500 Copper Sport builds on the ever-increasing demand for factory-custom trucks,” Mike Manley, Ram/FCA head, said in a statement.

“Our customers continue to enjoy the attention to detail and styling our designers put into each trim level, and this new eye-grabbing model will not disappoint.”

Inside the cabin gets Copper-colored accent stitching, special embroidery on the seats and headrests, and an all-black headliner and pillars. Plus, it also gets a nine-speaker Alpine sound system with subwoofer. Can you say “turn it up?”

Under the hood, the Copper Sport packs a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 with 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque that is mated to an eight-speed transmission.

Only 3,000 Copper Pearl beauties will be available with prices starting at $46,950. It will officially go on sale later this month.

But wait, there’s more. If you are looking for that straight-from-the-factory customized blackout look, then look no further than the special-edition Night packages for Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups.

Night adds blacked-out features, including black-bezel headlamps, 20 x 8-inch black-painted aluminum wheels, fancy grille surround, and plenty of badass powertrain-specific badging.

On the inside, the package includes high-back heated cloth vinyl bucket seats (ooh) with 10-way power adjustment (ahh), power-adjustable pedals, and automatic temperature control with dual-zone climate control. Nice.

The off-road powerhouse Ram 1500 Rebel already has a bold and aggressive look that demands attention, and Ram is turning that up a notch with the 2017 Ram 150 Rebel Black special edition that will make its debut next week at the 2017 Detroit auto show.P

The Rebel Black will be available in all Rebel exterior colors and adds black wheels, a brush guard, and an all-black interior for the first time. The black theme continues inside with all-black heated seats with Rebel embroidery, light slate gray accent stitching, black anodized bezels on the doors, center console, instrument panel, and gauge cluster trim rings. For those who enjoy some luxury in your off-roader, Ram offers the optional black leather Katzkin seats.

2017 Ram Rebel Black rear three quarter

The Ram 1500 Rebel is one of the automaker’s most off-road-capable offerings, featuring a factory lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, skid plates, tow hooks, custom Rebel interior, and air suspension for increased ride height. The Rebel’s off-road big brother, the Ram 2500 Power Wagon, includes many of the same rugged goodies but also features a sky-high 14.3 inches of ground clearance.

“Adding the Rebel Black package to an already aggressive off-road truck will continue feeding the momentum Rebel is creating for the Ram Truck brand,” said Mike Manley, head of Jeep and Ram brands, in a release.

Ram joins the ever growing trend of “blacking out” vehicles with Black or Night packages. Ram recently did this with the 2017 Ram 1500 Night Edition that includes a gloss-black grille, blackout headlamps, black badges, and 20-inch semi-gloss black wheels. Some notable recent Night and Black editions include the many Chevrolet Midnight editions, Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Night Edition, Hyundai Tucson Night Edition, and the Porsche Cayman Black Edition.

The Ram 1500 Rebel Black is available in crew cab form only and powered by either the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 or the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. The special model starts at $46,910 (including destination), and arrives at dealerships in March.

Despite its name, the 2017 Ram Rebel doesn’t have to wear loud colors like red. Rebels can be had in more subdued shades, including the newly introduced Mojave Sand paint, which is paired with an all-black interior. In addition to the Rebel Mojave Sand package, Ram unveiled something on the opposite side of the color spectrum–Ignition Orange Sport.

Other additions to the Mojave Sand package include black decal accents on the hood. The all-black interior is also new to the Rebel, which normally comes in a two-tone black and red color scheme. The package is priced at $595 and doesn’t include any mechanical upgrades. Ram says it will limit the package to 1,500 units and plans to make it available by the end of the year. The Rebel can be had with the automaker’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, or the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8.

Next up is the Ram 1500 Ignition Orange Sport, which costs $1,595. In addition to the bright orange paint job, the package includes black hood decals and black Ram badges on the hood and tailgate. Inside, “Copperhead” accent stitching is used throughout, and special embroidery is showcases on the seats and headrests. Ram is also limiting this package to 1,500 units and says it’ll be offered on Crew Cabs with a V-8 engine.

The 2017 Ram Power Wagon is set to go on sale later this year and will carry a base price of $53,015, including $1,320 destination fee. Unveiled earlier this year, the 2017 Power Wagon starts life as a Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Crew Cab and is enhanced with a long list of off-road hardware and a new grille design trickled down from the Ram Rebel.

Under the hood is a 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 making 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic. The Power Wagon boasts substantial upgrades to its suspension system, including Bilstein shocks and an electronic disconnecting front sway bar. Compared to the normal Ram 2500 HD, the Power Wagon is lifted 2.3 inches higher for 14.3 inches of total ground clearance and the capability to ford water at depths of up to 30 inches.

Other goodies include front and rear locking differentials, a front-mounted Warn winch, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, Power Wagon decals, and skid plates.

Inside, the Power Wagon-exclusive seats are embossed to look like tire treads. If that’s not your style, a Leather & Luxury package can be had for $4,495 and includes leather seats, among other features.

Customers can also opt to buy a truck with Power Wagon hardware without the garish visual treatments. Ram says the 2500 HD Tradesman Crew Cab 4×4 is available with a Power Wagon package for an additional $8,450, which brings the truck’s price to $48,315.

Texans love trucks. The Lone Star State is not only the top pickup market in the U.S. but, excluding the country as a whole, the largest in the world. Hence, the annual Texas State Fair is a time for every truck maker in America to show up with a fleet of bigger-than-ever trucks that flaunt array of shiny bright colors, get perched at dizzying heights and angles high above the show’s enormous Truck Zone, and come in a number of special editions with monikers like Laramie, Longhorn, and Lone Star—all themed and logoed in a manner that reflects Texas pride.

For GM and Ram, the event provided the ideal arena to showcase new heavy-duty and light-truck models. The unlikely duo, who both claimed that their trucks are the longest lasting, corralled a cadre of writers for two days for an experience that included short stints of driving, trailer towing, and boot planting on sawdust and dirt for their unveilings. GM and Ram’s press conferences, as well as news from Ford, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda, were punctuated with bragging rights pertaining to horsepower, torque, tow ratings, truck longevity, and new customer programs.

The State Fair also made a Texas-sized opportunity for Chevy to set a Guinness World Record, pulling the largest-ever flag behind a 2017 Silverado HD powered by The General’s all-new Duramax diesel. The American flag measured 40 by 80 feet—a footprint larger than most houses. Floating aloft on rigging behind the updated Silverado HD, Old Glory lapped the Texas Motor Speedway’s 1.5-mile oval four times without touching the ground, as did a similar-sized Texas flag also pulled by the Silverado.

While the exterior and interior of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 largely remain the same, GM has boosted the horsepower of the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V-8 by 19 percent to a best-in-class 445, elevated torque by 12 percent to 910 lb-ft, and improved emissions by 35 percent. The L5P Duramax is comprised of 90 percent new parts and gets a stronger cylinder block and rotating assembly, a new camshaft profile, improved cylinder heads, and a variable-vane turbocharger system. Outside, the Duramax trucks sport new hood scoops as a part of GM’s patent-pending cold-air intake system. The revision has been shown to bring improvements that include faster acceleration, better performance when towing up grades, and stronger passing and merging performance. The updated heavy duty can scoot from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds—0.3 second quicker than the previous generation model.

GM claims that 89 percent of all HD customers purchase trucks rated at less than 25,000 pounds of towing capacity. Of note, the new electronically controlled, variable-vane turbocharger not only produces more power but allows for lower exhaust emissions, there are improvements to exhaust braking, greater diesel noise reduction at idle and under power, and new first-in-class ceramic glow plugs give a faster cold start and are service free for the life of the vehicle.

Ram brought out the Ford Raptor-fighting Ram Rebel TRX Concept, which will push out 575 hp, leaving Ford’s 450 horses in the dust. It is powered by a version of FCA’s Hellcat supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Built on the Ram 1500 platform with a body that is 6 inches wider, penned with Power Wagon and Rebel design cues, and fitted with Texas-sized fender wells, the high-powered 4WD truck will fly faster than 100 mph. The Rebel TRX is also equipped with a revised Performance Control system, which has Normal, Wet/Snow, Off-Road, and Baja modes.

Engineers further beefed up the Rebel with 37 x 13.5-inch tires, suspension upgrades that include new springs and internal bypass shocks at each corner that provide up to 13 inches of suspension travel, and potent stopping power coming from six-piston calipers with 15-inch discs at the front and 14-inch discs at the back. The interior gets leather, suede, and carbon-fiber trim and materials, nylon door-pull handles, and six-point harnesses front and rear. Other off-road goodies include a locking rear differential, heavy-duty tow hooks front and rear, and an integrated jack in the rear bed between two spare tires.

Ram also showed off the new 2017 Ram 1500 Lone Star Silver Edition, sporting a new grille with chrome surround and chrome Wave Mesh inserts, new bright belt moldings, chrome exterior side-view mirrors, chrome wheel-to-wheel side steps, polished 20-inch wheels, and front tow hooks. Inside are sporty cloth and vinyl high-back bucket seats in Canyon Brown/Light Frost Beige or Black/Diesel Gray. The special edition is available on Ram 1500 4×2 and 4×4 Crew Cab in short and long box-length configurations, with a choice of the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, 5.7-liter HEMI V-8, or 3.0-liter EcoDiesel powertrains. It comes with the new Ram Care service program. On sale late fall, pricing is $900 with a suggested MSRP of $38,995, plus $1,320 destination.

Also revealed: a new luxury grille for Ram’s southwestern-themed 2017 Laramie Longhorn and updated looks and features for 2017 Limited and Longhorn models. The 1500, 2500 and 3500 Limiteds can be ordered with black “RAM” tailgate letters, with Brilliant Black or Granite Crystal Metallic paint ($195). Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 Longhorns get new bright-chrome grille with “RAM” lettering and chrome belt moldings. Ram 1500 Longhorn models also add standard Keyless Go, SmartBeam headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.

For 2017, Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty Laramie, Longhorn and Limited trims get the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 standard. Ram Heavy Duty Longhorns and Limiteds come with standard Bilstein monotube shocks on 4×4 models, for improved ride. Based on Ram’s Sport trim, Ram’s Night package ($395) adds blacked-out features–black 20-inch aluminum wheels, grille and badging, and key Sport appearance cues—body-colored front fascia, rear bumper, power-folding mirrors, and door handles. Also onboard are black-bezel projector headlamps with LED marker lights and tail lamps to match forward lighting. Inside are standard high-back heated cloth bucket seats with 10-way power adjustment, power-adjustable pedals, Uconnect 8.4 touchscreen system, and a premium instrument cluster with 7-inch driver information display.
