Large body-on-frame SUVs command big profit margins for automakers, and now Fiat Chrysler wants a piece of the pie. The company may build a large SUV to compete with models like the Chevrolet Tahoe, reports the Detroit Free Press.

The platform underpinning the current Ram pickup could serve well on a large SUV, said Ram CEO Mike Manley. But we might have to wait until the next-generation Ram pickup debuts. The new pickup should head to market in early 2018.

“You have the opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram,” Manley said. “You have the opportunity to take a large SUV off of it because we already have a very, very capable frame today that is going to be upgraded.”

Although it will be based on the Ram pickup, the SUV is likely destined for one of FCA’s other brands:  Jeep, Dodge, or Chrysler.

The full-size pickup market is undoubtedly lucrative, but FCA is missing out on potentially huge profits by not offering a large SUV similar to the ones from Ford and GM. Analysts estimate that GM makes at least $10,000 for each large SUV it sells. Last year, GM sold a total of more than 200,000 copies of its Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, and GMC Yukon models.

Ram might also see the return of a midsize pickup offering in the near future. “We’re looking into it,” Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said earlier this year about a midsize Ram truck. It’s yet to be determined whether it would adopt a body-on-frame setup.

Meanwhile, FCA is plotting a large SUV for Jeep under the Wagoneer label. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will both use the same architecture as the next-gen Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Ram Trucks and Mopar are teaming up to create the limited edition 2016 Mopar Ram Rebel, which will feature a number of performance and cosmetic enhancements. Only 500 units will be produced, and will be at select dealerships starting this summer with a starting price of $53,655 (including the $1,195 destination fee).

Marking the first limited edition Mopar-modified vehicle in the truck segment, the Mopar Ram Rebel will ride on 17-inch satin black wheels, feature a black front bumper skid plate, a skid plate to protect the power steering unit, and a serialized badge. Mopar builds upon the Ram 1500 4X4 Rebel Crew Cab and will offer the limited edition model in either Flame Red/Brilliant Black two-tone paint or a Brilliant Black monotone finish.

“The new Ram Rebel has been a solid addition to the Ram lineup, providing customers with a truck that can deliver the added capability that their active lifestyles demand,” said Mike Manley, Head of Ram Brand, FCA Global, in a statement. “The Mopar ’16 content illustrates how customers can easily personalize a Ram truck with factory backed accessories.”

The Mopar Custom Shop package for the Mopar ’16 Ram Rebel will include aluminum, dual bezel sport performance hood embellishments with a matte black hood graphic, fender flares, and Mopar blue-and-black graphic stripe accents on the sides and tailgate. Along with the additions from Mopar, additional parts and accessories will be available at dealerships for further customization options.

Hopping out of the 2016 Ram Rebel, I plant my boots in the dusty soil along the Backway to Crown King, a trail that winds its way through Arizona from Lake Pleasant to the small town of Crown King. Riding shotgun with me is none other than journalist, photographer, and off-road motorsports hall of famer Chris Collard. We leave the rest of the convoy of media and Ram personnel in a cloud of dirt as we press on toward Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona, in search of the toughest and most picturesque portions of the trail.

Temperatures are moderate, and it’s a beautiful spring day in the desert. The Backway is lined with fresh green vegetation, and as we ponder the age of centuries-old cacti, we come to a rocky shelf in the trail, the first obstacle of the day. Keen to keep our place at the front of the line, I opt for the quickest route through the rocks. The Rebel’s extra inch of ground clearance and Bilstein shocks soak up the ruts and we climb around the ledge with ease.

Provided a carefully chosen line, the Rebel proves itself capable of keeping pace with the Ram Power Wagon through some of the more difficult obstacles out here on the Backway to Crown King. But where the Rebel might hesitate when it comes to more challenging obstacles and terrain, the Power Wagon coolly cruises over them like speed bumps in an elementary school parking lot. With front and rear lockers, Goodyear Wrangler tires, and a 12,000-pound winch that we didn’t come close to using, there really isn’t another full-size truck on the market as capable as the Power Wagon.

And so, the Power Wagons in our convoy opt for the more difficult line: straight up the rock shelf. Front and rear differentials locked, the 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 needs little more than a gentle burble before the 33-inch tires grip the dusty rocks and crawl right over the crag without slip or hesitation. In short order, each Power Wagon traverses the obstacle drama-free, but the Rebels in the group are left to take the longer route around the shelf. Even with its surprisingly good traction-control system, 1-inch lift, air suspension, Bilstein dampers, there’s still no substitute for locking differentials.

Collard and I climb back into the cab of the Rebel and set our cameras in the massive center console. With the rotary dial shifter mounted to the dash, the Rebel’s interior proves to be photographer-friendly. As we climb in altitude we come to a steep and narrow chute with a few sizable rocks, and the convoy braces itself for another test of off-road might. The first Power Wagon edges its way into the narrow section of trail, its front sway bar disconnected as the axles flex in opposite directions, keeping the cab comfortably level. Here the Power Wagon’s 149.5-inch wheelbase is an advantage over the Rebel’s (which is 9 inches shorter), and one by one the Power Wagons trickle through. With a little guidance, though, even the Rebels steadily claw their way up the trail, hampered only by a lack of visibility over the large hood.

The Ram Rebel is a pickup ready for weekend adventuring, good for commuting to work during the week until you’re ready to load it up with dirt bikes and camping gear to get lost for a few days. The Power Wagon works better for those whose adventures don’t know the meaning of “stop.” For those who depend on their truck when the snow gets deep and the mud gets thick. As Kevin Metz, head of Ram brand marketing, puts it, “No other manufacturer puts a front locking differential or a winch on their truck.”

With the last truck clear of the final obstacle, Collard and I relinquish our scouting position and fall in line with the rest of the crew as we make our way into Crown King. The little town is a great stop for an off-road adventure; it’s quiet, secluded, and full of great food. But this is only a pit stop on our way to Overland Expo West, which lies ahead another 100 miles north.

In a grassy field on Mormon Lake, just outside Flagstaff, travelers from around the world gather for Overland Expo West to camp out, learn new skills, and trade tales of adventure. The expo is also a great place for vendors to show off fresh metal fit for their rugged, off-the-beaten-path lifestyle. Overlanders, as they’ve come to be called, are the endless wanderers of the globe, traveling in and on anything from motorcycles to Unimogs. They’re prepared to go anywhere and tackle anything.

Looking around at the pickups at Overland Expo it’s easy to see that two trucks are prevalent; the overlander’s default pickup is still the Toyota Tacoma, but there are plenty of Ram 2500 trucks around as well. And as long as Ram keeps churning out more and more ways to break into the off-road world, whether it’s with the capable Rebel or the fearless Power Wagon, those will only grow.

Remember your red wagon? I remember mine, a hand-me-down Radio Flyer. When I was old enough to use the small steel wagon—say, 4 or 5—it wore dents of all sizes, the red caps on a couple of its wheels had disappeared, and its white lettering had faded. But it worked just fine for collecting funny-shaped stones from the park, gathering moderately large sticks from the park, and the many other made-up jobs I performed in the park in front of my house. For the life of me I can’t recall why I thought the things I did with my Radio Flyer needed to be done, but I know I felt compelled to do them, had a blast doing them, and couldn’t have done them without my red wagon.

I felt the same way spending two weeks with the ProMaster City, Ram’s metro cargo van. It’s a Radio Flyer for adults, a small but spacious hauler of haphazardly collected bric-a-bracs, gewgaws, and knickknacks that you’re convinced have some sort of worth. The sticks and stones of my childhood have transformed into old bicycles, antique couches, and other personal effects being purged at garage sales.

2015 Ram ProMaster City cargo space 01

The ProMaster City’s short wheelbase and tidy proportions mean it can be parked where any run-of-the-mill car can. Its austere cargo hold is cramped compared to typical cargo vans but is still plenty spacious; a 6-foot-long dresser fit just fine in the back of the van, and one ratchet strap helped hold in a 7-foot-long couch that peeked through the Ram’s rear barnyard doors. That the Ram ProMaster City is perfectly enjoyable to drive even if it’s not hauling anything is dangerous because you accidently end up trolling the city on a trash day, picking up gently used items that have been thrown to the curb.

Two days later, you’re scratching your head, wondering why you saved an end table with peeling veener that smells like cat piss, trying desperately to find an out-of-the-way spot for it in your living room. You do things in the Ram ProMaster City that don’t need to be done, but you feel good about doing them and have a blast doing them all the same. Just like you did with your little red wagon.

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Michigan This 2015 AEV Prospector is far more capable than we need for our drive on average roads around southeast Michigan. The Prospector is an overlander, designed to take long journeys far from civilization to places that would leave a regular pickup quaking in its light-truck tires.

The Prospector uses a Ram 2500 or 3500 as its backbone and draws its name from an old truck trim level for which Ram let the trademark expire. Though AEV (American Expedition Vehicles) has developed aftermarket parts and packages for Jeep Wranglers since 1997, the Prospector is the first time the company has modified a pickup truck. After the company’s extensive experience working with Jeep, moving to sibling brand Ram wasn’t much of a leap. As with its Jeeps, AEV will sell you individual parts to modify your vehicle yourself, but the company’s primary focus is on selling turn-key vehicles. Have Jeep or Ram ship a brand-new vehicle to AEV, and you can pick it up a few weeks later with all the upgrades you desire (or can afford). The advantage of this approach, according to AEV marketing manager Matt Feldermann, is that the modifications have been properly tested and vetted, which you can’t do in your driveway. “Everything is all engineered to work together,” he says. “We opt for parts we’ve proven.”

This particular truck, which started life as a 2015 Ram 2500 Power Wagon, actually belongs to Feldermann, who in the past year has driven it more than 20,000 miles, many of them far from pavement. Despite the DualSport 3-inch suspension lift and aggressive 37-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tires on AEV’s Salta HD wheels, the Prospector drives extremely well. It tracks straight at 75 mph on the highway, and although the well-worn tires hum a bit over concrete, there is nothing abrasive or punishing about the upgraded suspension.

Credit for the civilized driving manners, in part, goes to the upgraded Bilstein dampers that are specially tuned for AEV’s application to keep body roll to a minimum. AEV’s lift kit also includes a litany of other parts designed to keep ride-and-handling as close to factory specs as possible, including new drag links, new brackets to relocate the front radius arms and rear track arms, and various other bits. AEV is then able to keep the truck’s factory steering geometry and suspension roll centers, preventing the vagueness and floatiness that we generally expect from lifted aftermarket trucks.

“Out of everything that we do, suspension tuning is the most important,” Feldermann says, noting that AEV has a former Chrysler suspension engineer on staff. Compared to the factory model, “We want it [the Prospector] to be more comfortable on-road but more capable off-road.”

On snow-slickened dirt roads, the AEV Prospector gives us all the confidence we want to keep pushing forward. Its toughened steel front bumper and Warn winch are there in case things really go south, and Feldermann’s truck has new LED foglights and an LED light bar for extra visibility. A front differential cover provides more protection over tough obstacles, and there’s even a high-mounted air intake to feed the 6.4-liter engine. Just don’t call it a snorkel: “It’s not for deep-water wading.” Rather, it was designed to site the air filter high above any dust kicked up by other vehicles on dirty trails. “We were kind of inspired by military equipment” with similar intake designs, says Feldermann.

Building the Prospector takes three to four weeks once AEV receives a donor Ram 2500 or 3500 at its facility in southeast Michigan, which is a giant warehouse with Jeep Wranglers and Ram trucks in various states of disassembly. The downside of the newness of the Prospector program is that AEV offers far fewer aftermarket parts for Ram trucks than it does for Jeeps. “Our big vision is to have a complete front-to-back, completely optioned package for Ram,” says Feldermann, hinting that many more parts will become available later this year. But for now, the Ram parts list pales next to AEV’s Jeep offerings.

As with the company’s Wrangler conversions, there will be plenty of shoppers who think it “just looks cool,” plus what Feldermann calls recreational off-roaders, people who hit the dirt no more than a few times per year. Still, we get it; there’s something awesome about driving around on average roads in a truck that has the chops to take you way, way, way out of town.

Want to drive around on some dirt? Buy a truck. Want to go overlanding, exploring way beyond the tendrils of 4G services? You want a Ram Power Wagon. A beefed-up version of the 2500 heavy-duty pickup, the 2017 Ram Power Wagon is designed to take you anywhere and back, no matter the terrain. Providing that kind of performance from the factory is no small feat, requiring dozens of upgrades from front to back and hours of testing to ensure everything works properly. “You could build this truck, probably (see here), but it would cost you more money,” brags Ram vehicle integration manager Rod Romain. “We’ve had hundreds of people working on each and every single piece.”

Ram subjects every new part on the Power Wagon to its usual tests, including hot- and cold-weather trips, as well as the same legal and crash-test requirements as any other pickup truck. Most aftermarket truck-part suppliers can’t say that. “The durability we run them on is pretty rigorous,” Romain says, noting real-world tests everywhere from Michigan’s Silver Lake off-road park to Moab, Utah. “We beat the crap out of them. It’s brutal.” What exactly does it take to turn an ordinary Ram 2500 into a Power Wagon? Let’s find out.

Ram Power Wagon 02

1. Front and rear bumpers are made from steel to be tough, and painted matte black to look tough. The lower plastic air dam has been removed because, well, it would get removed the second you ventured off-road anyway, according to Romain: “If you’re sticking way down there, you won’t be for long.”

2. A 12,000-pound Warn winch designed to Ram’s specifications. “You can’t buy this winch,” says Romain. It has 125 feet of cable and mounts securely to a fat steel plate bolted directly to the truck’s frame. It’s also why you can’t get a Power Wagon with a diesel engine, as there simply wouldn’t be space for the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel and its cooling apparatus while still fitting the winch behind the front bumper.

Ram Power Wagon 09

3. Two functional recovery hooks up front, should you get seriously stuck.

4. The 6.4-liter engine makes the same 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque as in other 2500s, but its throttle mapping is retuned for gentler response off-road. The top-speed limiter also drops from 106 to 99 mph in deference to the new tires. Cylinder deactivation helps save fuel in low-load situations, such as cruising unladen on the highway.

Ram Power Wagon 07

5. All-new look for 2017, including a new front grille inspired by the Ram 1500 Rebel, blacked-out body cladding, smoked lights, and a gloss-black hood decal.

6. Anti-roll bars reduce suspension articulation, which is why the Power Wagon has an electronic disconnection system called Smart Bar. The anti-roll bar is essentially split into two pieces, with an electric actuator that moves a collar back and forth to connect or disconnect the bars’ alignment splines. That allows for far more front suspension movement, meaning the Power Wagon can keep rubber on the dirt more often. The disconnect is available only below 18 mph for safety reasons because, Romain explains, “You don’t want that sway bar disconnecting on the highway.”

Ram Power Wagon 06
The front suspension assembly is basically identical to any other Ram 2500, with 4.10:1 gearing and a live axle. But the Smart Bar and Articulink, and their benefits, aren’t available on lesser Rams.

7. Even more suspension capability comes from the appropriately named Articulink. By installing an extra rubber bushing and link in the usually solid front control arms, Ram engineers allow the Power Wagon’s front live axle to twist more than in a standard 2500, again providing more articulation. “It allows the axle to roll with the suspension,” Romain says. “This helps you keep four tires on the ground.”

Ram Power Wagon 01

8. The front axle can mechanically unhook from the rest of the driveline to save a minuscule but still critical 1 mpg when driving in rear-wheel-drive mode.

9. The wheel openings are wrapped in matte-black cladding to prevent scratches when you’re on the trail.

10. The springs are taller, improving ground clearance to 14.3 inches versus the standard Ram 2500’s 12.0 inches. The springs are also softer to help soak up impacts and traverse big obstacles without crashing over them, but that also means towing capacity is reduced to 10,030 pounds and payload to 1,510 pounds.

Ram Power Wagon 08
11. Bilstein monotube shock absorbers were chosen because they can better handle the rigors of off-road use, where they must deal with rapid movements through almost their entire length of travel. “It’s able to handle those high acceleration rates without overheating,” says Romain. “A traditional twin-tube [damper], you can actually crack the disc in an off-road situation.” Ram worked with Bilstein on unique valve tuning for the Power Wagon’s shocks.

12. The Power Wagon manages an impressive 26 inches of suspension articulation between its front left and right tires, ideal for uneven terrain.

13. An extra bit from Bilstein—the PowerHop damper—links the top of the differential and the truck’s frame, reducing windup that can result when the tires spin on loose surfaces such as sand and gravel. “It just keeps your driveline from winding up and unwinding,” says Romain, noting that rival trucks sometimes try to counter this by staggering the shock absorbers, one ahead of the axle and the other behind.

14. Electronically locking differentials front and rear “allow you to go places you shouldn’t go,” says Romain. They give drivers the benefits of locked axles on loose surfaces without compromising on-road performance, and they’re better for intense off-roading than simpler limited-slip differentials. Electromagnetic actuators physically link each halfshaft within the diffs and force them to function as if they were one solid axle. “When it’s locked, it’s locked. [The wheels] won’t differentiate,” says Romain. The rear locker can be engaged when the truck is in 4-High, but only in 4-Low can the front also be locked.

15. The exhaust resonator is unique to the Power Wagon, giving the truck a more aggressive sound.

Ram Power Wagon 10

16. Steel bars protect components, including the transfer case and gas tank, stopping owners from damaging critical parts because, Romain explains, “the last thing you want to do is high-center on your driveshaft.”

17. Hill descent control uses engine braking and the anti-lock brake system to help slow the truck when going down steep grades. Drivers use the column-shift up and down buttons to adjust speed. “It frees your attention up for going over obstacles and not paying attention to your vehicle speed range,” Romain says.

Ram Power Wagon 05

18. Most Ram trucks have an electronic four-wheel-drive controller on the center stack, but in the Power Wagon a rotary switch for the locking differentials takes up that space. So the Power Wagon has a more traditional floor-shifted manual transfer case. “Some of these guys like this old-time 4×4 stick.”

Ram Power Wagon 03

19. These 17-inch wheels are specific to the Power Wagon (though humbler Tradesman trim levels get steelies) and Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 33-inch tires provide the ideal blend between on- and off-road performance, with particular attention paid to the ability to deflate when off-roading, as well as to sidewall compliance for better ride comfort. “They’re a little noisy,” admits Romain, but “the all-around performance of this tire is very impressive.” Engineers chose tires with siping to help on wet or icy roads.

20. Why only a crew cab, short-box setup? That’s what customers wanted. Ram originally sold the Power Wagon with a regular cab option, but it proved unpopular and was discontinued.

Ram has introduced another limited-edition pickup: the 2016 Ram 1500 Stinger Yellow Sport. The new model follows a long line of special edition Ram pickups.

“The Ram 1500 Sport offers unique features for customers who enjoy aggressive styling and great performance,” said Mike Manley – Head of Ram Truck Brand, FCA Global, in a release. “Truck buyers are very attached to their vehicles and the Stinger Yellow Sport model adds a custom appearance to the segment’s best-looking truck.”

As its name suggests, the Ram 1500 Stinger Yellow Sport is based on the 2016 Ram 1500 Sport trim with an eye-searing yellow paint job. The limited-edition model is available only on Crew Cab models with either two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive. In addition to the bright paint job, the Stinger Yellow Sport package features a vented sport hood, and dual exhaust with chrome tips. Two-wheel-drive models ride on 22-inch wheels, while four-wheel-drive models ride on 20-inch wheels.

All 2016 Ram 1500 Stinger Yellow Sport models are powered by the automaker’s 395-hp 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 mated to the eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission.

Inside, the Yellow Stinger Sport package adds Light Black Chrome accents and yellow details to the Sport model’s black leather interior. Yellow is used for the contrast accent stitching, Sport embroidery on the seats, Ram headrest logo, and on the sport mesh inserts on the black leather seats. The automaker’s 8.4 Uconnect system with navigation and rearview camera are also standard.

Production of the 2016 Ram 1500 Stinger Yellow Sport is limited to just 2,250 units and is priced from $44,340 (including $1,195 destination). The limited-edition pickups are scheduled to arrive at dealers in early May.

“Not everyone needs this much capability,” Ram Truck Brand head Bob Hegbloom admits of the two newest off-road-capable Ram models. Nonetheless, Ram knows that its customers need extra capability for hitting trails rather than flexing in parking lots — in fact, the brand sold about 5,000 Power Wagons in 2015 alone. For those buyers, the 2017 Ram 2500 gains an updated Power Wagon model and a new 4×4 Off-Road package, both of which debut at the 2016 Chicago auto show before going on sale later this year.

The 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon looks like a super-sized version of the Ram 1500 Rebel, with a new black grille featuring giant “RAM” lettering, tinted headlight housings, a vented hood with a gloss-black anti-glare graphic, two-tone paint, and giant “Power Wagon” decals (which can optionally be deleted if you like to roll up to the trailhead with more subtlety.) The truck’s badges, fender cladding, and mirrors are also blacked-out. On the tailgate, an enormous black “RAM” logo is said to be stamped in size-324 font.

There’s plenty of functionality to back up the brash looks. Available only as a Crew Cab model with four-wheel drive, the 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon packs a 410-hp, 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine and six-speed automatic transmission. It can tow 10,030 lb, has 14.3 inches of running ground clearance, and can ford 30.0 inches of water without drowning the engine. Tough black powder-coated bumpers are fitted front and rear, with a Warn 12,000-lb electric winch up front.

Underneath, the 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon has as 2.3-inch suspension lift compared to a regular 2500, with Bilstein shock absorbers, electric anti-roll bar disconnects for improved articulation below 18 mph, and 17-inch wheels shod in 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. The front and rear axles have been upgraded to beefier American Axle Manufacturing units, both with electronic differential locks.

Milder off-road package

There’s also a new 4×4 Off-Road package for Ram 2500 customers who don’t need quite so much capability. Available on any cab style with any engine with four-wheel drive, Ram categorizes the Off-Road package as intended for, “the occasional off-roader.”

Americans love utility vehicles, no matter the size or shape. That idea of a multi-use box on wheels that can carry your stuff and your friends with ease is irresistible. But considering how much the SUV ideal has changed since the truck-based Explorers and 4Runners of the 1990s, today’s rising tide of crossovers is disappointingly homogenous. They’re all just blob-shaped, all-wheel-drive appliances that are becoming harder and harder to tell apart.

You can always count on more change, though, and a new crop of even smaller boxes is bringing a bit of excitement to the party. This group of so-called “subcompact crossovers”—including the 2015 Kia Soul, the 2015 Jeep Renegade, the 2016 Honda HR-V, the 2016 Mazda CX-3, and the 2015 Nissan Juke—is not boring. Though they’re all based on subcompact car chassis, no one formula for this type of car has yet emerged as the one to beat (that is, copy). A broad range of powertrain setups and sizes, in addition to glaringly different personalities, keeps things interesting.

We gathered this group to decide which one we’d most like to park in our garage. Lacking a clear rubric to grade vehicles in this fresh segment, we simply did what we do best: Drive too fast, fiddle with every button and touchscreen, and pile into every back seat. These being (or at least claiming to be) utility vehicles, we also made sure to load them every which way with all manner of stuff. Here’s how they stack up:

5. Jeep Renegade

+Distinctive, rugged appearance
+Nicely finished interior
+More off-road capable than the others
-Lazy, slow-shifting transmission
-Expensive
-Poor fuel economy

For many people, the Jeep Renegade’s looks alone will be enough to put it at the top of their list. We don’t blame them. More distinctive than any of the other four competitors inside and out, the Renegade manages to communicate classic Jeep coolness into a small and affordable package. Jeep design cues such as the slatted grille combine with a well-proportioned, boxy shape to create a convincingly rough-and-tumble trucklet. If you simply want a cheap Jeep, this Fiat-based crossover is a no-brainer—and a smarter buy than a Wrangler unless you plan on serious off-roading.

But if you’re looking for a small crossover for any practical purpose, you can do better. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder is thrashy, and the nine-speed automatic makes the engine’s 180 horsepower unavailable most of the time. “It takes so long to shift I could time it in minutes,” complained daily news editor Jake Holmes. On the bright side, we do like the Renegade’s steering, and its relatively planted ride and handling make it feel far less tippy than you’d think given its 66.5-inch overall height (nearly half a foot taller than the diminutive Mazda).

There isn’t as much space inside the tall, boxy body as we expected. We couldn’t fit a bike in without taking the front wheel off, as the narrow cargo opening and high liftover height make it difficult to use the entirety of the relatively capacious 50.8 cubic feet of space (with the seats folded). At least that space is nicely trimmed, with a pleasing color scheme and plenty of cutesy Easter eggs that play up the Jeep brand’s heritage.

The Jeep also returns poor fuel economy considering its size. It can’t even manage 30 mpg on the highway, which is less surprising when you realize it weighs 400 to 500 pounds more than the lightest in this group, the Mazda and the Kia. As senior editor David Zenlea said, “When you strip away the Jeep charm, you’re left with a fat, unrefined Fiat.”

4. Nissan Juke

+Punchy turbo engine
+Sporty, responsive handling
+ Offbeat styling (if you like it)
-Offbeat styling (if you hate it)
-Small inside
-Dated interior

The funky little Nissan Juke is the oldest car here, but its fun-loving character hasn’t worn out its welcome. Neither has the flat-out weird styling. Some will hate it; others, us included, will love it. Do beware that the Juke’s sloping rear end severely limits space in the cargo area, and the rear seat is decidedly cramped for two, let alone three passengers.

The spunky styling is also backed up by some real verve: We’re fans of the punchy, 188-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, which combines with a responsive CVT (yes, there is such a thing) to provide strong mid-range torque. The handling is fun, too. “The Juke has a nimble, tossable feel to it, and the steering is precise and accurate,” noted daily news editor Eric Weiner.

The Juke’s age starts to show on the inside, where the tiny touchscreen and subpar plastics remind us too much of a ratty old subcompact. And yet the Nissan still costs $28,225, the second-highest here, and lacks active safety features such as the blind-spot monitors found on the Mazda, the Jeep, and the Kia. The cabin isn’t completely devoid of party tricks, though—we delighted our friends with the center stack buttons that magically switch from climate controls to drive-mode switches on command, and the 360-degree camera view is useful in parking lots.

The Juke has never been easy to categorize, and its appeal defies its low ranking. If space is not your highest priority and you like the look, the Juke will still put a smile on your face.

3. Honda HR-V

+Cavernous, configurable interior
+Strong value for money
+Smooth ride
-Sluggish CVT
-Outdated, unintuitive touchscreen
-Uninspired styling

The Honda HR-V makes the most sense of any vehicle here. Its eminently configurable and spacious interior offers incredible utility in a small package and lives up to Honda’s reputation for genius packaging. With the bottom seat cushions flipped up, we stood up two bikes in the rear seat while still leaving all 23.2 cubic feet of space in the cargo area wide open. Take it camping, load it up with friends, fill it to the brim with your monthly Costco bounty—the HR-V seems like it’s up for anything.

Up for anything, that is, except for having fun. The powertrain is a letdown, with an unresponsive CVT that’s loath to let the 1.8-liter four-cylinder rev anywhere near its torque peak. “Lots of unrefined noise without much acceleration in return,” senior editor David Zenlea said. Light steering helps with parking-lot maneuverability but combines with the soft suspension for lazy, boring driving. It’s hard to believe this is based on the zippy Honda Fit. To its credit, the HR-V does provide a comfortable, composed ride, and matches the Mazda for the best fuel economy ratings of the bunch.

The Honda also offers good value. Our loaded, all-wheel-drive EX-L model comes in at $26,750, the second-cheapest in this group, and comes with features such as navigation, heated seats, a sunroof, and Honda’s blind-spot camera system. However, all this good sense is spoiled by a frustrating touch-sensitive interface. The counterintuitive infotainment screen unnecessarily complicates tasks as simple as adjusting the stereo volume. What happened to Honda’s commitment to simple, easy-to-use interiors? The dashboard’s sleek look certainly isn’t worth the compromise in usability, especially considering it comes in such a bland package.

If you’re dead-set on an HR-V and its class-leading practicality, it’s best to forgo the EX-L’s extra features and choose the base LX model, which has more traditional controls and can be had with a stick.

2. Mazda CX-3

+Crisp, fun handling
+Sharp design inside and out
+High-quality interior materials
-Cramped rear seat
-Tiny, impractical cargo area
-Limited outward visibility

The attractive Mazda CX-3 is a foil for the dowdy-looking Honda; in the CX-3, function is clearly less important than form. Our knees rubbed against the front seatbacks while sitting in the rear, and the rising beltline means that your passengers have a pillbox view outside. We had trouble fitting much stuff in the cargo area, too. It’s not just the paltry amount of space available (only 10.1 cubic feet behind the rear seats)—the tailgate opening is also the smallest of all these cars, and the liftover height is among the highest.

Yet for all those objective shortcomings, Mazda’s smallest crossover overdelivers on just about every subjective category. It drives better than any other car in this comparison and looks sharp enough inside and out to warrant a premium badge. And unlike the other fashion-first vehicle in this test, the Renegade, it has the substance to back up its style. Its sophistication is evident in everything from the quick-shifting automatic transmission and the accurate steering to the solid-feeling infotainment control knob, which wouldn’t be out of place in a Mercedes-Benz. “I’d rather go to a job interview driving this than any of the others,” said photographer Patrick Hoey. For all that, the Mazda is still affordable to buy and operate. Our well-equipped Grand Touring model costs $27,120 and gets impressive fuel economy even with all-wheel drive.

What to make of such a good car that happens to be a terrible crossover? Zenlea likened the CX-3 to a sort of budget alternative to the Range Rover Evoque, pointing out that the Mazda is “expressly designed to look unconventional, not to be utilitarian.” This stylish, sporty little box is certainly likable, but more than any of its competitors—even the silly Juke—it makes us ask, “Why?” Unless the CX-3’s crisp styling and all-wheel drive are must-haves, you’re better off buying a cheaper, more efficient, and just as fun-to-drive Mazda3 hatchback.

1. Kia Soul

+Swanky interior with lots of kit
+Comfortable rear seat
+Refined ride and powertrain
-No AWD option
-No handling verve
-So-so fuel economy

The Kia Soul has been playing this game a little longer than the others in this comparison. Now in its second generation, the fast-selling Soul has matured into a refined, attractive, pleasant-to-drive box that does just about everything well while asking for fewer compromises than any of its competitors. It is nearly as nice as the Mazda inside and out, but is nearly as practical as the Honda. Its refined four-cylinder pairs with a fast-responding six-speed automatic that is never caught flat-footed. The fine art of suspension tuning has long eluded Kia engineers, but the Soul finally gets it just right with a composed, quiet ride.

One major shortcoming for some will be the Soul’s lack of optional all-wheel drive. Kia officials say it’s coming. In the meantime, this Michigan-based staff is confident that with a good set of winter tires, there are few places this high-riding front-wheel-drive box won’t be able to take you.

You’ll definitely have cash leftover for tires because the Kia is the cheapest car in our test (and would remain so even if you were to add a hypothetical $1,500 for all-wheel drive). It’s paradoxically one of the best equipped. For our test car’s price of $24,750, you get a heaping load of luxury features, including a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and heated rear seats. It’s all thoughtfully arranged and handsomely appointed. “Not only is the infotainment system useful, clear, and attractive, there is handsome stitching and leather all over,” noted Weiner.

All in all, the Soul looks and feels like something more than just a little car, which is, we suspect, the most important point in this young segment.

For 2016, Kia is adding a slew of new features and packages to its funky Kia Soul. While the three individual trim levels still exist (Base, Plus, and Exclaim), each now has additional equipment and features for 2016.

Across the board, alloy wheels are now standard. Base models with the optional Convenience Package now feature a 4.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system including satellite radio and a back-up camera.

The “Plus” trim level now comes standard with new gloss-black front bumper inserts and a back-up camera. The Soul “Plus” now offers a new Designer Collection package, which equips the Soul with a choice of special two-tone paint schemes, including white exterior paint with a red roof, or a red exterior with a black roof. The Designer Collection package also comes with 18-inch alloy wheels with black accents and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

The “Exclaim” trim now comes standard with leather-trimmed seats, and adds a new optional Premium Package, which includes a forward collision warning system and lane departure system, both firsts for the Kia Soul. The Premium Package also comes with navigation, uprated Infinity sound system, special mood lighting, panoramic sunroof, heated front and rear seats, power adjustable driver’s seat, leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel, and leather-wrapped shift knob.

The optional Umber Color package now comes with HID headlights and Nappa leather seat surfaces and door armrest accents.
