Mitsubishi has revealed that it will eventually bring a successor to the legendary Lancer Evolution, but that model won’t happen for another six years. Speaking with Australia’s MotoringMitsubishi global boss Trevor Mann revealed that a new performance model is under consideration and will likely be a crossover instead of a sedan.

According to Mann, the Evo’s successor is part of a long-term plan rather than mid-term. Mann also indicated that Mitsubishi wants a halo car, however it’s still undecided what type of vehicle that will be for the Japanese brand. Mitsubishi discontinued the Lancer Evolution back in 2015 when it revealed the Final Edition model. That particular model had an updated 2.0-liter turbo four rated at 303 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque paired exclusively to a five-speed manual transmission. In the U.S., only 1,600 units of the Lancer Evolution Final Edition were available.

During the same interview, Mann also hinted that Mitsubishi is evaluating the possibility returning to motorsport. Thanks to the Lancer Evolution, Mitsubishi has a rich rally heritage and competed with fellow Japanese automaker Subaru back in the 1990s and even early 2000s. Mann told Motoring that returning to motorsport has been discussed within the company recently and that it has to consider it because of its heritage since it has the technology for it.

Mitsubishi is introducing a new Lancer trim that will serve as a last hurrah for the slow-selling sedan.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer Limited Edition goes on sale later this month for $20,660. Slotting just above the base ES 2.0, the Limited Edition features black treatments to the 16-inch wheels, roof, upper front grille garnish, fender garnish, and door mirrors. A Limited Edition badge and a sunroof are also included.

More interesting is the custom black-and-red interior. Inside the cabin, you’ll find sport seats and red stitching on the steering wheel, shift knob, brake lever, arm rest, and door trim. A black headliner, gloss black accents, and aluminum pedals complete the look. As far as technology goes, the model features a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an LCD multi-information display, and a rearview camera.

Under the hood sits a familiar 2.0-liter inline-four-cylinder engine producing 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. A CVT is the only available gearbox on the Limited Edition trim.

The Limited Edition Lancer will be available for the rest of the model year, and that’s it. Earlier this year, Mitsubishi confirmed it would discontinue the Lancer in August. Going forward, the company will focus heavily on crossovers and plug-in hybrid technology that it will share with Nissan.

Mitsubishi is resurrecting its first-ever car with the help of West Coast Customs. The unusual pairing will recreate a 1917 Mitsubishi Model A using the platform from a Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid.

Mitsubishi says this project represents an overview of its history as an automaker as it merges a design that reaches back 100 years with modern technology, including rally-derived four-wheel drive and a fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain.

“The Mitsubishi Model A is the vehicle that paved the way for many other unique and exciting models over the years and we’re excited to re-design it with West Coast Customs,” said Francine Harsini, senior director, marketing at Mitsubishi Motors.

“The Mitsubishi Model A will feature all the distinctive aspects of the 1917 vehicle, but will be built on the PHEV platform and offer the latest in automotive technology.”

The three-diamond logo was first featured on the Model A, which was the first series production of cars produced in Japan. Only 22 examples were built from 1917 until 1921. It was based on the Fiat Tipo 3 and was powered by a 35 hp 2.8-liter I-4. The Outlander’s hybrid drivetrain features a 119 hp 2.0-liter I-4 and two 60-hp electric motors.

West Coast Customs will complete the vehicle this summer in its facility in Burbank, California and feature the build on an episode of their show, “Inside West Coast Customs.” The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is not yet available in the United States.

The Mitsubishi L200 pickup has gained an extreme off-road sibling appropriately named the “Desert Warrior.” Unfortunately, it’s just a one-off model.

Created in collaboration with Top Gear magazine, the Desert Warrior includes a host of upgrades over the standard L200 sold in markets outside the U.S. These mods include oversized wheels with self-inflating tires, a heavily modified suspension, an external roll cage, long range LED lights, and other updates that will help it navigate rough terrain. Bespoke Cobra racing seats can be found inside the cabin.

Although the Desert Warrior isn’t available to purchase, Mitsubishi has used it as inspiration for a more practical special-edition L200: the Barbarian SVP. Limited to a production run of 250 vehicles, the model was created by Mitsubishi’s new Special Vehicle Projects program and comes available in a black exterior or a blue exterior that’s similar to the color of the Desert Warrior. The model is noticeably tamer with 17-inch black alloy wheels, but it does feature aggressive wheel arches and BF Goodrich off-road tires.

We can only hope Mitsubishi will bring a pickup to the U.S. And judging from a chat our friends at Motor Trend had with Mitsubishi North America boss Don Swearingen a while back, there’s still hope.

Mitsubishi has given the Outlander Sport a polish to keep it looking fresh alongside the new Eclipse Cross. The 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport will debut at the 2017 New York auto show with a few interior and exterior updates before going on sale this fall.

The automaker has redesigned the front and rear bumpers of the Outlander Sport, also adding new LED running lights. Inside the cabin, the Outlander Sport receives the 7-inch Smartphone Link display from the larger Outlander. This infotainment system, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, is a step up from the 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch screens offered on the current 2017 Outlander Sport.

Other updates include a redesigned shift lever, newly designed floor console, and an Alloy Silver paint job. Buyers can now opt for a Touring package, which bundles together a panoramic roof, NVH improvements for a quieter ride, and a host of safety features including automatic high beam, lane departure warning, and rear camera.

The compact crossover offers a choice of two engines. A 2.0-liter inline-four produces 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque while a 2.4-liter inline-four makes 168 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque.

Featuring a new turbo engine and a more coupe-like profile, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

The automaker didn’t play it safe when designing the compact crossover. Up front, the Eclipse Cross looks like other Mitsubishi vehicles with a familiar grille and headlight design. But unlike its current stablemates, it features a steeply raked liftgate. A body-colored bar splits the rear window in two pieces and houses unique C-shaped lights.

The exterior styling and the name are clearly attempting to establish a connection with the old Eclipse coupe, but look inside the cabin, and you’ll notice a more modern design and new infotainment setup. Through the center touchscreen, drivers can operate music, Google Maps, Apple CarPlay, and other functions. The vehicle also receives a touchpad controller and a head-up display. Folding the seats should be made simpler thanks to a 60:40 setup and slide-and-recline adjustment.

Hopping on the turbo bandwagon, Mitsubishi has equipped the crossover with a new 1.5-liter turbo gas engine paired with a CVT. The model will also be available with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine that is offered in combination with an eight-speed automatic transmission, although it’s unclear if this combination will come to the U.S. Power output is unknown, but we do know the model comes with standard all-wheel drive that incorporates active yaw control for enhanced stability.

The Eclipse Cross has a footprint similar to that of the Outlander Sport. It measures 173.4 inches in length and 71.06 inches in width, and has a 105.1 inch wheelbase.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will head to dealerships in Europe this fall before eventually making its way to North America and other regions. Pricing is forthcoming.

Move over Outlander, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is reviving the Eclipse badge for a new compact SUV, which will be unveiled next month at the 2017 Geneva auto show.

From the looks of the teaser photos, the new crossover incarnation keeps the bubbly rear end and well-rounded front mug of the Eclipse coupe sold from 1989 to 2012. It also resembles Mitsubishi’s GT-PHEV Concept we spotted at last year’s Paris auto show.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 1

From the side profile, the Eclipse Cross resembles a sporty station wagon. The company says the name Cross is short for crossover.

Very clever MitMoCo, very clever. And we thought it referred to the expression “don’t get cross with me.”

“Eclipse is a word used to describe an astronomical event. Marrying stylish coupe lines with the freedom of movement the SUV genre gives, the Eclipse Cross’ beautiful, dynamic form serves to bring about the same sense of excitement and inspiration as the diamond ring seen immediately before and after a total solar eclipse does,” states the press release from Mitsubishi. But wait, there’s more!

“The high-saturation red body color newly developed for the model is also reflected in the name to evoke the brilliance of the prominence seen during the total solar eclipse.”

Kind of like a big heart. And since Mitsubishi announced this news on Valentine’s Day, it’s like receiving a love letter from a sweetheart. Well, maybe not quite.

Mitsubishi says the all-new Eclipse will make its debut at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show next month. We can’t wait to see the Cross — crossover up close.

Mitsubishi Motors unleashed a super exclusive Limited Edition trim level for the 2017 Outlander Sport at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show.

The new trim level receives an alloy fuel door, black door mirrors, 18” wheels, fog lamps, HID headlamps, a rear view camera, and a nifty Limited Edition badge. You will definitely be the envy of all those ES base model owners.

“As the brand sales leader, Outlander Sport does an exemplary job of offering consumers unmatched value at an attractive price,” said Don Swearingen, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Mitsubishi Motors in a statement.

2017 Outlander Sport LE Front

“We’ve now taken that approach one step further by integrating additional standard equipment and technology into the Limited Edition at a price point that is unprecedented within the broader CUV segment.”

It’s available in seven colors and the interior gets a special custom design with black fabric and red stitching on the steering wheel, shift knob, and brake lever.

Other fancier interior bits include aluminum pedals, heated front seats (sorry, rear seat passengers,) and a display audio system that’s Apple CarPlay and Android Auto friendly.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Limited Edition arrives in dealerships this month with a starting price of $21,995.

Mitsubishi will show off a new compact crossover model at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Described as being sporty and coupe-like, the new utility vehicle will be sold alongside the small Outlander Sport (called ASX in Japan and other markets) and larger Outlander. This will be the first new product reveal since Nissan bought a controlling stake in Mitsubishi last October.

A shadowy teaser photo reveals the new crossover’s profile, which does look coupe-like with its raked C-pillar and rising beltline. From the side, the front end reminds us of the current three-row Outlander’s nose, wearing similar headlights.

As we heard previously, this crossover will debut not as a concept but as a production-ready vehicle. The model will slot between Mitsubishi’s two existing crossovers. You may be thinking there’s not much room between the compact Outlander Sport and the slightly larger three-row compact Outlander, but the former is expected to shrink while the latter will grow between 2019 and 2020. Style will also help differentiate the new model from its crossover stablemates, with the previous eX and GT PHEV concepts serving as inspiration. The model will arrive in the U.S. early next year powered by a new turbocharged engine mated to Mitsu’s latest all-wheel-drive system.

The all-new Mitsubishi crossover debuts in Geneva on March 7.

Lancer, Mirage, Outlander and i-MiEV — you may be hard pressed to conjure up iconic images of Mitsubishis aside from Evos, but that could all change — someday. After several years without a significant new product, Mitsubishi Motors is about to switch its auto show presence from concept to production.

Automotive News reports that Mitsubishi’s debuts will stop being concepts and start being production models next year. That makes a lot of sense since sales were down 4.8 percent last month for the company over the previous year. Though they are still up by 1.5 percent over the previous year, the new plan sounds like a no-brainer.

Mitsubishi’s new design boss, Tsunehiro Kunimoto, spoke with the publication at this year’s Paris auto show and says we can expect to see a compact crossover at the Geneva show next summer. Kunimoto is no stranger to design and worked at Nissan for four decades prior to moving to Mitsubishi two years ago. He also had a big hand in the design of the top selling Nissan Juke and the task of rebuilding this struggling brand is his number one priority. His aim is to create exciting designs that showcase the company’s “Mitsubishi-ness,” as he has said in the past.

If the new compact crossovers look anything like the GT-PHEV (Ground Tourer) plug-in concept SUV that made its debut in Paris late last month, we should expect to see plenty of stranger things to come. Bold lines, big wheels, and floating roofs could be all the rage, but until then, we’ll have to just wait and see.
