McLaren is revealing more information on its 650S successor leading up to the car’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show. According to the automaker, the new supercar achieves double the aerodynamic efficiency as its predecessor.

The teaser image above shows off the car’s active rear wing. Extending the full length of the car’s rear end, the wing moves upward and adjusts its angle to optimize aerodynamic efficiency when needed. At its most extreme angle, the wing acts as an airbrake, which can be deployed in less than half a second, McLaren says.

Further improving aerodynamics, McLaren redesigned the doors and put in two strategic air ducts. One draws in air from the top of the door to the High Temperature Radiators to cool the engine, while the other lifts air out of the front wheel arch for improved downforce. Overall, the car’s maximum downforce has increased 50 percent over the 650S. Meanwhile, cooling efficiency has jumped 15 percent thanks to new technology.

McLaren Automotive Second Generation Super Series Monocage II

As we previously reported, the 650S successor features a new carbon fiber structure that weighs 40 pounds less. McLaren also said the new model has a lower center of gravity to improve performance. McLaren hasn’t officially announced the name of the new Super Series car, but based on the filename of a press release the automaker made a few weeks ago, it’s likely to be called P14.

We expect to learn more details leading up to the car’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The Geneva International Motor Show is a highlight every year because it doesn’t deal with just standard pedestrian cars; it also deals in supercars, hypercars, and everything exotic and rare. This year will be no different with a host of supercar reveals; however, McLaren has preempted the show to give us a sneak peek of its upcoming replacement for the 650S.

Building upon the success of the last Super Series; which encompassed the 12C, 650S, and 675LT, McLaren is building the new car on a brand new carbon fiber monocoque, called the Monocage II. The carbon fiber passenger cell appears to adopt much of the same architecture found on the Monocage I used in the P1 hybrid hypercar.

Yet, using a new engineering method, the ultra-lightweight carbon fiber structure is more rigid than the previous 650S, but, it weighs 40 pounds less. McLaren unfortunately didn’t say how it stacked up to the P1’s chassis, however, that omission might mean that it’s on par with the hypercar. But even compared to its competitors like the Ferrari 488 GTB and Lamborghini Huracan, the new McLaren chassis is the lightest in its class.

2015 Mclaren 650S front end lineup 02

McLaren states that the development of the Monocage II “has allowed McLaren to incorporate a wider cabin entrance and lower sill to improve access into the driver environment that will offer excellent all-round visibility.” The new chassis additionally allowed the engineers to lower the car’s already considerably low-slung center of gravity, thereby improving its dynamics and performance.

“Super Series is the core of the McLaren business and personifies the blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement that is the McLaren heartland,” said McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt. Furthermore, “This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new Super Series will be absolutely true to McLaren’s pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment.”

Up until now, McLaren has been mum about what the new car will be called, with rumors ranging from the 750S to P14 to some undisclosed new name. But we may now know thanks to a slip-up of file naming. The press release’s filename is “P14 tease 1_USA FINAL.” If this can be trusted, and we think it can, the new Super Series will adopt the nameplate, P14, bridging the gap between the P1 Ultimate Series and the P14 Super Series.

The “P14” will debut this March in Geneva.

Just in time for the holidays, McLaren Special Operations is launching new aftersales personalization options for owners of Super Series cars, which include the 650S, 675LT, and discontinued 12C. Part of MSO’s Defined line of accessories, the parts enhance the exterior and interior looks, and can be purchased by existing owners or at the point of sale of pre-owned McLaren Super Series models.

For the exterior, MSO has designed a new carbon fiber rear diffuser, carbon fiber mirror arms with matching mirror caps, louvered carbon fiber front fenders inspired by historic Can-Am McLaren racers like the M8D, and an unpainted carbon fiber hood similar to the one found on the limited-edition 650S Can-Am (pictured above). The upgrades aren’t just cosmetic, either. In addition to saving weight, many of the carbon fiber pieces will subtly enhance a Super Series model’s already impressive performance. The rear diffuser and front fenders improve airflow and increase grip. Available interior upgrades include carbon fiber vent bezels, carbon fiber door sill guards, and a carbon fiber steering wheel wrapped in leather or Alcantara with carbon shift paddles.

It’s been only five years since McLaren delivered its first production road car since the much-beloved, but highly-exclusive, F1. And in terms of development cycles, five years isn’t that much time, especially when you consider that McLaren has launched not one, not two, not even three cars, but a total of five separate models. It appears that the British-based supercar builder doesn’t sleep and it isn’t stopping that growth anytime soon as it recently produced its 10,000th supercar.

According to incoming McLaren Automotive CEO, Mike Flewitt, “The production of the 10,000th McLaren is a significant milestone in the short history of the company. The fact that it took us 42 months to build our 5,000th car and just 22 months to build the next 5,000 speaks volumes about the pace of development of the company.”

The 10,000th car was one of McLaren’s newest offerings, a brand new 570S. The supercar, part of the company’s Sports Series, uses the same carbon fiber monocoque chassis as the 650S, 675LT, and 570S, as well as the same twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-8 found in the entirety of the McLaren lineup.

McLaren 10000 group

McLaren also stated that the company recently had to add a second shift on the production line at the McLaren Production Center to “accommodate the increase in orders after the introduction of the Sport Series family,” which includes the 540C, 570S and 570GT, doubling the pace from 10 to 20 cars built per day.

While the 570S is undoubtedly in hot demand, and McLaren could likely charge a premium for such a historically significant example, this car will stay with McLaren and be preserved in the company’s Heritage Collection. And while not in the press release, McLaren is hard at work on creating the next car for both the company’s Super Series and Ultimate Series, replacing the 650S, 675LT, and P1 hypercar.

With a 0-60 mph time of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph, McLaren’s 570S is a super fast ride as well as a hell of a daily driver. Now, for those that want to race their McLaren coupe properly, there’s a new track pack available featuring an all Alcantara interior, carbon fiber racing seats, lighter alloy wheels, and a new extended rear wing.

“The Track Pack, available to order immediately, is designed to deliver enhanced levels of driver engagement for owners who enjoy occasional track day activity without compromising the car’s all-round usability and includes a discretely extended rear wing to generate additional downforce,” says McLaren.

This upgrade follows the recent unveiling of the 570S design editions, which are also available for order. By replacing the leather interior with a lighter Alcantara one, adding lighter seats, alloy wheels, and other tweaks, McLaren shed 55 pounds off of the 570S’ already low weight of 3,186 lb.

New aerodynamics of the pack displays a subtle and tasteful 0.47-inch higher rear wing. McLaren says it boosts cornering downforce by an additional 63.9 pounds at 150 mph. Works for us.

Additional exterior enhancements include a McLaren Special Operations roof finish in Dark Palladium and a sportier exhaust to go with the 3.8-liter twin turbo V-8 mid-engine that screams behind the back of your head.

A track telemetry app also comes with the pack. The system offers real-time info, lap times details, data logging, nifty graphics, and other cool toys for grown-ups.

The optional package adds an additional $20,615 to the average $200,000 price tag of the McLaren 570S.

So you have an extra $200,000 or so around and want to buy a 2017 McLaren 570S — but you don’t want go stock. Well, McLaren has great news for you, as the automaker now offers five exclusive Design Editions for the 570S.

“Every design element has been selected to be in perfect harmony,” says McLaren, which had its designers working overtime to craft different finishes and combos that compliment the company’s signature color palate.

The new editions feature McLaren designers’ choice of paint, wheels, exhaust, and caliper color combinations. Plus, there’s a matching interior package to compliment the exterior of your mid-engine sports car and its 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 that’s capable of speeds up to 204 mph.

McLaren 570S Special Design Editions Vermillion Red interior

For instance, Design Edition 1 features Vermillion Red paint, five-spoke wheels, Stealth exhaust, and red brake calipers on the outside. The interior gets Carbon Black Alcantara, Apex Red Nappa leather seats, Jet Black Nappa leather upper fascia, Apex Red Nappa leather lower fascia, Slate Gray stitching, a two-color steering wheel, and a branded leather sill finisher.

Looks good, we’ll take it. But if red is too much for you, other edition colors include Onyx Black, Storm Gray, Ventura Orange, and Silica White. It’ll set you back an additional $10,555 dollars over the base price, which McLaren says is still cheaper than ordering all of the options separately.

In addition, buyers can choose more trim and carbon-fiber options for their tony two-seater for additional bucks, of course. McLaren Design Editions are currently exclusive for the 570S high-performance beast only.

Orders are now being taken for 2017 deliveries. Ventura Orange would be our first choice for Southern California dreaming. It would look spectacular on Highway 101 during rush hour traffic. Yes, we can see it now.

McLaren will announce today very early details on a range-topping, hybrid-powered, “hyper-GT” it hopes to deliver to customers in early 2019. It has three seats, McLaren F1-style, and the child inside me is freaking out.

Speaking to AUTOMOBILE over the phone, a McLaren representative said “I’ll try not to overstate this, but we’re doing a new F1.” This is not a drill.

McLaren has codenamed the car BP23, which stands for “Bespoke Project 2” (the 3 refers to the number of seats). The car will presumably utilize an evolution of McLaren’s Monocell construction, which the company says will be a “streamlined, shrink-wrapped carbon fiber body of great elegance.” It’ll feature McLaren’s signature dihedral doors, this time powered and with apertures extending into the roof.

Before we get too excited though, there are a few things in McLaren’s official release on the matter that call for a closer look.

2016 McLaren 570S badge 02

First is the bit about the power. McLaren says the BP23 will be “one of the most powerful McLarens yet created.” Right now that honor belongs to the P1 and its 903 total system horsepower, matched with 664 lb-ft of torque.

Second, the BP23 project is being characterized as a “hyper-GT” apparently because it will be “designed for longer journeys, but with the high levels of performance and driver engagement expected of any McLaren.” What the release doesn’t say is that the new car will be faster, wilder, or perform better than the current McLaren P1, which is a two-seater hybrid (below). Remember, when the McLaren F1 was released, it was the fastest car in the world. It would retain that title for no short stretch of time. It just doesn’t look like that’s the BP23’s target.

Instead, we may be looking at a kind of three-seat grand-tourer with the potency of the P1 and the comfort and usability of the 570GT. It’ll most certainly be a special car, though, as the BP23 will have bespoke switchgear and the most luxurious appointments and craftsmanship of any McLaren ever.

Based on the teaser sketch McLaren released, we’re definitely looking at a car with a slightly different shape than we’re used to with the company’s two-seaters. And with the driver all alone up front there’s clearly an invisible string McLaren wants to establish between the BP23 and the legendary F1; Woking will build just 106 units of the car, the same number of F1s built.

All we know for sure is that the hybrid hypercar segment is heating up once again. Between the Aston Martin AM-RB 001, the Mercedes-AMG R50, and now McLaren’s codename BP23, there is a lot to look forward to in the pipeline.

And if the BP23 sounds like it’s your thing, you’re already too late — all 106 units are sold out.

It seemed like a fun idea at first, to contrive a low-slung, matte gray sinister British invasion of the Dream Cruise. We cruised last year in a McLaren 650S, after all, and jumped at the chance to sample the 570’s modified Monocell II carbon-fiber tub, which was designed with greater interior comfort as well as easier ingress and egress in mind. But the Detroit faithful stand firm in their ranks, and the colorful parade of American muscle kept its hold on the hearts and minds of Cruisers from Birmingham to Pontiac.

“Go the hell back to Pebble Beach!” comes the bark from a lifted F-150, its operator scowling with disdain. He’s right, by the way. Despite many thumbs-up from passersby, we did not belong at the Woodward Dream Cruise in a 2016 McLaren 570S.

Whatever. The sharp bite of the McLaren’s standard carbon-ceramic brakes is a bit much in stop-and-go traffic, anyway.

Clearly having outstayed our welcome, we made for twistier — and less gridlocked — roads. With a roll on the throttle, we’re roaring through the gears of McLaren’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and onto the highway, eyes wide and palms dampening the cushy, blessedly button-free Alcantara steering wheel.

Almost immediately, as traffic bleeds into nothingness past our view from the cozy cabin, we wonder aloud why anyone would shell out for the pricier 650S. Yes, the 562-hp 570S is down on power compared to its 641-hp big brother. And yes, the 570S uses a traditional suspension setup with anti-roll bars in place of the 650S’ fancier, more advanced ProActive Chassis Control and its hydraulic dampers. But for once, the brilliance and genius of a true supercar is something that can be easily felt and enjoyed at any speed and on any road, not decided by lap times and drag races.

The “entry-level” McLaren’s price tag is anything but, costing nearly $211,000 as tested with a base price of $187,400 including destination fees. That money gets you an aluminum, mid-mounted 3.8-liter V-8 with a flat-plane-crank that sends 562 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque just the rear wheels — in this space, all-wheel drive is the norm (e.g. the Porsche 911 Turbo S, Acura NSX, and Audi R8); the only other big player relying on rear-wheel drive is the Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2. Nonetheless, McLaren claims a 0-60 mph sprint of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph. It’s not mussing about.

As we exit the highway and begin to slice up a set of winding pavement, beset on each side by emerald forest and still water, the optional sport exhaust ($3,860) spits decidedly un-British waves of fury. The engine has the right amount of torque to comfortably hang with normal traffic, but as soon as the turbos come alive and peak torque arrives at 5,000 rpm, it becomes genuinely difficult to resist sending yourself into orbit. For maximum cardiac acceleration, let the revs build to 8,000 rpm — just past peak power at 7,400 rpm — and bang off a lightning-quick upshift with a gentle yank of the carbon-fiber shift paddle.

Speed is only one ingredient here, though. Part of the joy is how balanced and refined the chassis feels, the way the steering delivers clear feedback to your hands, the way tiny body movements and weight transfers are communicated over uneven surfaces and elevation changes. We chalk most of that up to lightness — the 570S tips the scales at just 2,895 pounds thanks to its carbon tub and aluminum body panels. The car even looks like all unnecessary fat was removed via liposuction, leaving only an exposed, extruded system of lean muscle and alien sinew tightly hugging sculpted bone.

The cockpit of the 570S wisely toes the line between supercar and luxury car. We wouldn’t blame anyone for finding it a little plain, but the blend of Alcantara seats, leather-wrapped dash with red accents, and quality black plastics where necessary really works. It doesn’t feel frivolous or showy, but suitable and serious. Even better are the power-adjustable sport seats, which are plenty cossetting for public roads — and a far cry more livable than the optional fixed bucket racing seats. And with a reasonable 3.5 cu. ft. of cargo room under the nose — enough for a pair of weekend bags or one road test editor — there’s little reason for practical worries when it comes to spiriting the 570S away for a long trip.

It’s downright challenging to make a car that’s this much fun simultaneously so playful and totally approachable; most supercars miss the mark. That McLaren has managed it at such an early point in the company’s production car timeline is even more surprising, although not all remnants of growing pains are gone. The infotainment screen looks pretty, but it’s tricky to figure out, and the rear-view camera is so blurry and useless that it might as well be a kaleidoscope. Every time we’d shut the driver’s door, the window would get confused and drop half-way open. Open and close it once more, and it would slide back up into place. Obsessive as Woking has proven, there seems to be no dodging the foggy specter of British electronics.

Oddly, those minor quirks are part of the 570S’ charm. It’s a perfectly livable everyday supercar, but there’s enough individuality here to make it feel miles more special and exotic than a 911 Turbo S or an R8. The same reason we were banished from Woodward Avenue is the same reason we’d live in exile from here to kingdom come — as long as the McLaren 570S was our chariot.

McLaren just revealed a new driving experience for those with deep pockets, and it’s not a cookie-cutter trackday like you might expect. For the princely sum of just $15,000 per person, McLaren will provide lodging, amenities, and a camouflaged 570S for a winter driving academy in the Arctic Circle.

It’s billed as the “Pure McLaren Arctic Experience,” and it’s probably the only chance you’ll ever have to drive a supercar in such extreme conditions. The program is based in Ivalo, Finland, home of the renowned “Test World” facility, where miles of ice and snow tracks are carved out of the landscape.

Each participant receives instruction behind the wheel of a 570S, learning from McLaren’s top test drivers. The students will learn advanced car control technique, including the famed Scandinavian Flick maneuver.

Not convinced? For those insatiable maniacs who tire of driving supercars on ice, McLaren also offers a host of arctic-themed side activities, including a “husky safari and snowmobile expedition.” Housing is provided at the fabulous Javri Lodge, an ideal place to experience the northern lights up close.

If you’ve got both the appetite and the checkbook, get in touch with McLaren. The limited-space, three-day program runs from January 15th to February 3rd, 2017.

McLaren has confirmed an electric version of its P1 hypercar, but it’s not the record-breaking performance machine you’re probably expecting. The British sports car maker has unveiled a drivable toy version of the McLaren P1, complete with scissor doors and audio system.

The pint-sized P1 marks the first appearance of an open-top Spider variant, granting children ages 6 and younger unlimited headroom. McLaren’s distinctive dihedral doors lift up to grant access to the cabin, which accommodates one. The car also features push-button start, working headlights, an “air-conditioning” unit, and an MP3 audio system that comes pre-loaded with a playlist of popular nursery rhymes, including Hickory Dickory Dock. McLaren says the powertrain features three forward gears and one reverse gear. The automaker also estimates the tiny supercar can accelerate from 0 mph to top speed in just 2 seconds, though it doesn’t specify what top speed is.

The toddler-scale McLaren P1 is offered exclusively in Volcano Yellow, and will be available in late October — just in time for the holiday season — from McLaren dealers followed by select global toy retailers. Youngsters hoping to get a McLaren as a gift should be extra-good until December, as the P1 carries an MSRP of £375 (roughly $486).
