Lexus has confirmed a report that its funky UX compact SUV is headed for production, though the luxury brand is not yet saying which markets will receive the small crossover or when it will arrive.

Yoshihiro Sawa, Lexus managing officer, initially spilled the beans at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, telling Australia’s Motoring to “Please expect UX, it’s not so far away.” He also believes the UX appeals to younger buyers who prefer models like the IS and CT.

Lexus UX Concept Detroit Auto Show Doors Open

“The loyal users always [are] changing the car, but at the same time the average age is going up. But this year we tried to seek the buyer average that is younger,” Sawa told the Aussie auto site.

“We try to capture these new younger buyers, so that we change our design ways.”

The funky four-seat crossover made its debut last year at the 2016 Paris auto show to raves — and a few rants — by our staff.

Despite being described as a “horrible monstrosity” with seats that seem like a “futuristic torture device,” the UX has been lapping the international car show circuit to more acclaim than jeers.

When it arrives, the UX will join the popular NX and RX crossovers in Lexus’ stable. It combines the looks of an off-roader with a coupe-like driving position. It was designed by the automaker’s ED2 design center in France.

Inside, the UX concept features its Kinetic seating setup with web-like, seat cushions and backrests that move kinetically with its occupants’ weight to provide a more comfortable driving experience, we are told.

If you haven’t seen it in person, Lexus tells us that the UX Concept will make definitely make an appearance at the New York auto show next month. It will not be at the company’s main stand, but downstairs in the truck/SUV area at the Javits Convention Center in case you want to take a closer look — if you dare.

Unlike its German rivals, Lexus has never played in the big sedan diesel game, opting instead to use hybrid technology. The 2018 Lexus LS 500h, which made its debut at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show, is the automaker’s second effort at a hybrid large sedan and uses the same powertrain as the 2018 LC 500h sports coupe.

That powertrain consists of 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 295 horsepower (compared with 415 horsepower from the 2018 LS 500’s twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6). Combined with the hybrid motors, the LS 500h’s rating is 354 horsepower. Torque is 258 lb-ft, versus 415 lb-ft for the conventional engine.

Like the LC, the LS has a bespoke Lexus Multi-Stage Hybrid System with a “four-stage shifting device,” essentially a four-speed automatic that the company says feels and acts like the 10-speed automatic in the conventional gas-powered LS 500, plus two electric motors with a 310-volt, lithium-ion battery. The new car’s battery is 20 percent smaller, yet denser, than the battery in the outgoing Lexus LS 600h L.

Lexus isn’t talking fuel efficiency numbers or whether the big sedan will run for any amount of time on pure electric power, though it cites an in-house 0-60 mph sprint of 5.4 seconds versus 4.5 seconds for the rear-wheel-drive LS 500 and 4.8 seconds for the all-wheel-drive LS 500. The hybrid will be available with RWD or AWD.

Of course, well-heeled green consumers won’t give up any thing by adding an “h” to their Lexus LS500s. Lexus touts its omotenashi interior design, “taking care of the driver and passengers,” featuring hand-pleated door trim “inspired by origami and glass ornamentation using Japanese kiriko techniques,” including myriad wood trims using “sliced wood and laser-cutting techniques.”

The LS 500h goes on sale along with the rest of the LS line late this year.

Some six decades ago Chrysler unleashed a batch of dramatically different 1957 models that made its General Motors and Ford rivals seem shockingly old and tired. An advertising tagline for its volume seller, Plymouth, summed up the situation nicely, suggesting Chrysler was three years ahead of the industry: Suddenly, it’s 1960!

I’m reminded of that history because on first sight of the 2018 Lexus LS, I immediately thought, “Suddenly, it’s 1957!” At first glance this big, powerful modern car reminded me of a 1957 Buick Roadmaster. Not because of any specific details, obviously. But both cars are strongly assertive, their grilles complex assemblages of an enormous number of discrete pieces, far bigger than necessary for cooling the mechanisms behind them but impressive in their massive presence. And, of course, another 1957 touchstone came to mind instantly: “Zorro,” the Disney TV show. When you stand to the left of the LS, it’s impossible not to see that mark of Zorro Z-slash in the headlamp cluster. It is superposed on the fat-bellied front fender form, conjuring images of bumbling Sgt. Garcia’s sword-mutilated uniform after another humiliating encounter with the masked Hidalgo.

If both cars look very heavy, I believe it is by intention. For the LS 500, the imagined weight was artfully achieved by design, as it was in the Roadmaster. There’s little question today: Lexus builds the world’s highest quality mass-produced cars, infinitely more reliable electronically than Germany’s finest, just as it’s evident Lexus makes near-perfect traditional American cars — smooth boulevard cruisers never remotely intended for the Nürburgring or DTM racing. This LS is not particularly sleek or aerodynamic—not with those huge, high-drag holes up front — but it does look substantial and more at home on streets in the fancier parts of town than a sublimated race car that’s clearly out of place.

Toyota did a fabulous end run around midrange American cars when it introduced the Avalon, a totally bland, bench-seat, anonymous-looking sedan the U.S. market accepted quickly and that helped kill off midrange domestic brands Mercury, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Plymouth. It seems Lexus pulled off something similar with this car, perfectly suited to our market.

The thick-pillared, nearly flat-sided body seems to press down heavily onto a perfectly flat base plane. There’s a strong horizontal theme to the LS, emphasized by the hard chrome edges at the bottom of the front end, carried back along the sills by a straight chrome trim piece. A hard horizontal line just below the side glass parallel to that base carries back over the taillights, in conflict with the side window profile, itself inflected at two points for no apparent reason. I see this design as an esthetic mess, but it’s a carefully executed purposeful mess that achieves almost exactly what I suspect was desired. So despite my misgivings about its beauty (or, rather, its lack thereof), I predict this car will sell well and satisfy its owners.

By Design 2018 Lexus LS rear three quarter

1. This sharp line parallel to the ground above the thick, fat-bottomed bumper emphasizes width and makes the car seem bigger and heavier than it actually is.

2. This chrome bar and those underlining the taillights again stress the horizontal theme of the entire body.

3. The rear fender is cut away to allow the lamp to be visible from the sides and results in a surface point emphasizing length, allowing the outer surface to be farther outboard.

4. A continuation of the hard horizontal line below the side glass around the rear corner again stresses horizontality.

5. Two inexplicable bends in the window chrome leave a nearly straight section of chrome above the rear door handles.

6. This dead-straight kink in the body side has two obvious points of origin, front and rear, and fades away in the sheet metal bulge over the rear wheel opening.

7. The front fender bulge looks almost spherical from this angle. It is quite fat however you regard it.

8. This upward-facing section in the doors is deliberate, created by a hard rising bottom line running into the rear wheelhouse, with the upper part a soft radius into the doors.

9. This is a nicely sculpted piece, perfectly straight top and bottom but curved at its peak width.

10. Note the sill surfaces tip a bit outward toward the wheel opening.

11. Also subtly sculpted, this trim piece continues the horizontal line very low on the body.

12. The kink in the plastic bumper shroud is unrelated to anything but the chrome strip below.

13. Casting, rather than cheaply extruding constant sections, has been a feature of Lexus LS models for decades. It subliminally projects quality.

By Design 2018 Lexus LS front three quarter

14. The upper corners of the spindle-shaped grille frame are razor-sharp points.

15. The headlamp assembly on the left has the classic mark of Zorro embedded. On the other side it’s backward. A sign of dyslexia on the part of the swordsman?

16. The hood cut line is really interesting as a decorative element, rising and falling as it moves to the rear.

17. It’s easy to see here that the A-pillar blocks a lot of vision for the driver.

18. There is a break in the transverse roofline where the massive structure surrounding the doors intersects with the lower, flatter roof panel.

19. Door handles are too big visually but just right in the hand. Relief behind them is too close to the hard line above, in the interest of having a convenient height for a standing person.

20. The corner grilles are simpler, with the horizontal theme emphasized.

21. A complementary trim piece, horizontal and pointed on the inner ends.

22. Lower corners of the grille frame have substantial depth, are slightly radiused at the forward point and greatly softened as the frame recedes to allow the texture to be more vertical.

23. A whole lot of texture-weaving in this massive grille. On the whole I like the ’57 Roadmaster’s equally overdone grille better. But both are too much for any decade.

By Design 2018 Lexus LS interior

24. Lines swirling down and forward from the windowsill are a surprisingly fanciful idea for what is, for the most part, a very staid automobile.

25. The exterior’s horizontal theme brought inside, the armrest form not unlike the taillights’ pointing form.

26. Pretty standard look for steering wheels these days: lots of leather, lots of buttons, not much style, elegance, or innovation.

27. These rotating knobs up high on the glare shield are quite practical and convenient, if a bit obtrusive.

28. An analog clock, a really nice thing to have in a car. Digital time pieces cost a lot less, but there’s little joy in looking at them.

29. Parallel lines bound by stitching near the driver’s door suggest a lot of hand work. I suspect that’s not true.

30. The half-dozen trim lines again, this time diverging in the center, converging to the end spacing.

Lexus unveiled the fifth-generation LS earlier this year but has saved the hybrid version for the 2017 Geneva auto show.

The Lexus LS 500h makes its official debut on March 7. The model will receive a multi-stage hybrid powertrain that is available in the LC coupe. The LC500’s hybrid system comprises of a 3.5-liter V-6 engine mated to an electric motor, a combination that produces a total output of 354 hp.

Unsurprisingly, the LS hybrid looks almost identical to the standard model in the teaser photo Lexus has released. We should see the same chrome-tastic body, updated spindle mesh grille, and interior goodies such as 28-way power front seats with heating, cooling, and massage functions and rear seats with special shiatsu massage and reclining capability.

The 2018 Lexus LS debuted at the Detroit auto show with a new V-6 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission, and lighter body. It sits on the new GA-L global architecture for luxury vehicles, a platform that is shared with the LC. For 2018, the LS has grown 1.3 inches in its wheelbase, and is also lower than its predecessor.

The 2018 Lexus LS goes on sale in the U.S. around the end of the year, so the hybrid model shouldn’t be too far off.

If there was ever any doubt Lexus was planning a full-blown F variant for the LC coupe, that can be put to rest now. Toyota has filed a trademark application for the name “Lexus LC F” in Europe.

The filing was submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office on February 6. Four days earlier, Toyota submitted an application for “LC F” minus the Lexus branding. The trademarks were filed as Nice Classification (NCL) 12, which under the 1957 Nice Agreement corresponds to “vehicles; apparatus for locomotion by land, air, or water.”

That’s about all the info the documents tell us, unfortunately. But we can assume the LC F will ride on Lexus’ new GA-L platform for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive luxury cars. We can also assume it will make more power than the current LC 500, which boasts 471 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque from its naturally aspirated V-8. A few years back we had heard Lexus was working on a twin-turbocharged version of that engine for the LC good for around 600 hp. If such an engine is destined for the LC F, it would best the 577-hp twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 in the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe as well as the 560-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 in the BMW M6.

We liked what the standard LC had to offer, so we’re excited to learn more about what Lexus has cooking for the LC F. Stay tuned.

It may seem odd for Lexus to debut a vehicle without wheels, but a few years ago, Toyota’s Marine Department invited Toyota Motor Corporation’s president, Akio Toyoda, to spend a few days piloting a range of premium yachts. Toyoda was impressed by the offerings, which led the Lexus International chief branding officer to take on the Sport Yacht project to show that Lexus can make a splash in new markets, including luxury yachts.

Debuting in Miami Beach, Florida, the Lexus Sport Yacht is a running, “proof-of-concept” that is distinctly a Lexus product. The Sport Yacht was created to be a recreational tourer that can accommodate up to eight guests. Twin Lexus high-performance V-8s lifted from the company’s GS F and RC F totaling 885 horsepower, power the craft and it is capable of hitting a top speed of 43 knots (49 mph.)

Using partially traditional yacht building techniques, Lexus married the Sport Yacht with techniques used in the LFA supercar such as hand-laid woven carbon fiber cloth and a composite material called “carbon fiber reinforced plastics” to save almost 2,200 pounds, which not only improved the overall strength of the Sport Yacht, but also reduced the resistance and drag at high speeds.

Lexus Sport Yacht Concept 3

“This concept for the Lexus Sport Yacht allowed us to explore how Lexus design language could be applied to a maritime lifestyle. For the Lexus Design Center this project has been very exciting. The effort is valuable to us as it stirs our creative energies and pushes our imagination to design and lifestyle possibilities outside of the automotive realm we know well,” said Yoshihiro Sawa, Executive Vice President of Lexus International.

The Sport Yacht Concept includes captain controls and monitors in the form of color touchscreen panels, similar to what you’d find in the company’s road cars. It also features GPS, digital charts, surface radar, underwater sonar, and a luxurious cabin outfitted with a sofa, table, air-conditioning, a two-burner stove, sink, and refrigerator. Further adding to the overall experience, Lexus installed a fully integrated audio-video system and Revolution Acoustics surface-mounted drivers and a Mark Levinson amp.

Unfortunately, the Lexus Sport Yacht the company revealed is a bespoke project that Lexus has no intention to put into production. Too bad about that, but we’d still enjoy taking it for a weekend cruise.

Last year, Lexus debuted its upcoming flagship grand touring coupe, the LC. Since then, according to the company, the most asked question on the LC has been, “how much will it cost?” Finally, as its on-sale date is fast approaching, we have an answer.

The base LC, the LC 500, starts at $92,975 including destination and handling, while the LC 500h, the hybrid iteration, will start at $97,485. From those starting points, Lexus will offer customers four separate trim packages ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 extra.

The first package is the Touring Package, which will set LC 500 owners back $4,000, but only $2,790 for LC 500h owners. This package includes a glass roof, 20-inch forged wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, 2-way passenger seat lumbar, and a Mark Levinson audio system. For the same amount of money, owners can spec their LC 500 with the Sport Package which includes all the options in the Touring Package, but adds more driver support during dynamic driving. For LC 500h owners, the Sport package only adds $2,400 to the car’s base price.

Jumping up to the Sport Package with carbon adds $7,000 in the LC 500, and only $5,400 in the LC 500h, and adds a carbon fiber reinforced plastic composite roof, 21-inch forged wheels, Alcantara sport seats, and a limited-slip differential, HUD, among the other options included in the Sport and Touring packages.

All packages also includes as standard, Lexus Safety System +, which includes pre-collision systems, pedestrian detection, radar cruise control, lane keep and departure alerts, along with intelligent high beam controls.

However, for enthusiasts, Lexus will offer the Performance Package with carbon, costing $10,000 for the LC 500 and $8,790 for the LC 500h. The all-new 2018 Lexus LS flagship sedan has officially landed. And it’s exactly how we would expect the latest LS to look like — wild spindle grille, fancy zigzag LED headlights, and a rear end with a light kit that resembles two alien heads facing off.

Lexus’ fifth-generation LS made its dramatic debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show. Under the hood, it features an all-new 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine that delivers 415 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. Lexus says it will ferry its driver and passengers from 0-to-60 mph in a quick 4.5 seconds to boot.

Its new V-6 engine is mated to a modern 10-speed transmission that is also used for its new Lexus LC coupe. There are Normal, Sport, and Sport+ modes with shifter paddles to tailor your driving experience the way you like it. Lexus tells us the transmission is a torque-converter automatic with shift times “that rival those of dual-clutch transmissions.”

There’s also an advanced electronic control system, which “anticipates the driver’s input and chooses the ideal ratio by monitoring the acceleration, braking, and lateral-g forces.”

“We set previously unheard of targets and resolutely pushed ahead towards these ambitious goals,” said Toshio Asahi, LS chief engineer in a statement.

“The customers who are going to want to own a Lexus flagship are already surrounded by luxury on a daily basis, people who have a sharp eye for authenticity to begin with. We wouldn’t turn their heads with a conventional premium product.”

Taller passengers have plenty of legroom courtesy of the brand’s, all-new stretched and wider GA-L platform that is also shared with the LC. Its 123-inch wheelbase is 1.3-inch longer than last year’s model. The LS is also about 0.6-inch lower, with the hood and trunk shaving off an additional 1.2-inch and 1.6-inch, respectively.

“The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand,” said Koichi Suga, chief designer. “More than any other model, it embodies the history and image of Lexus and serves as a symbol for everything the brand stands for.”

The 2018 Lexus LS gets a new six-side window design and its moonroof slides open for fresh air fans. There are also two new 19- and three 20-inch wheel designs to choose from for that aftermarket look.

Inside, there are 28-way power front seats that can heat, cool, and massage the driver, front passenger, and even the rear seated ones, too. A power front and rear seat with Shiatsu massage and a raised ottoman is also offered as a wider rear seat luxury package and seems like a must have for the lux lifers.

Cabin noise is kept to a minimum thanks in part to the Lexus Active Noise Control system, which can reportedly detect engine sounds entering the sedan and cancel “certain frequencies using anti-phase sound from the audio speakers.”

If silence is not your game, there’s a premium 3D surround Mark Levinson audio package with in-ceiling speakers to help burst your eardrums.

There’s a 12.3-inch navigation screen on the dash and if you are not paying attention to the road, like you always should. But should you somehow get distracted, there’s a complete safety package available, with one of the newest systems being Intuitive Pedestrian Detection with Active Steering available.

Here’s a description of the pedestrian detection system, according to Lexus: “If a person is detected in the lane ahead and a collision is imminent, the LS is designed to automatically brake and potentially steer around the person while staying in the lane.”

Pricing and EPA mileage ratings haven’t been announced, but the 2018 Lexus LS models are expected to go on sale by the end of the year.

GLENDORA, California — Southern Californians are blessed with a variety of options when it comes to great driving roads, such as the famous Angeles Crest Highway. But Angeles Crest and its 10s of miles of easily navigated sweepers are not my destination, as the 2016 Lexus RC 350 F Sport I’m driving could easily handle everything it has to offer at speeds that you probably don’t usually associate with Lexus. Instead, I visit Glendora Mountain Road, a tightly wound bit of pavement popular with autocrossers in Miatas and touge battlers in sport compacts. I’m glad I made this choice, as it gives Lexus’ sport coupe a chance to shine.

At entry, the F Sport costs $4,105 more than a base RC 350. The premium gets you a new front bumper and grille, 19-inch wheels wearing sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires, a blind spot monitoring system, heated and cooled sport seats, perforated leather steering wheel and shift knob, a power-adjustable steering column, and most importantly, an adaptive sport suspension with Sport+ mode. Also included is Lexus’ “active sound control” system, which pumps artificial engine noises into the cabin. It doesn’t necessarily detract from the experience, but the less said about the concept, the better.

In addition to the F Sport package, our tester’s performance acumen is augmented by the optional $460 limited-slip differential, which also adds performance dampers, and the $1,900 variable-steering system with four-wheel steering. Other options include the $2,610 navigation and Mark Levinson audio package, plus the $1,100 moonroof. Lexus charges $595 for the Ultrasonic Blue Mica paint, bringing the total to a cool $55,000.

Helped along by the four-wheel steering system, which turns the rear wheels opposite of the fronts at speeds up to 50 mph, the Lexus rotated eagerly through GMR’s tight turns. With the suspension set to its stiffest settings via Sport+ mode, the RC had no issue staying composed on off-camber turns or uneven pavement. The particularly adventurous could stay in Sport+ fulltime, but everyone else will be happier in the softer, more Lexus-like Normal mode for day-to-day driving.

The variable-ratio steering, which ranges from 2.35 to 3.18 turns lock-to-lock, reduces the level of input needed to navigate tight turns. Unfortunately, between the variable-ratio system and the electric assist, steering feel is compromised. Feedback provided via the wheel is limited, and the amount that does come through feels artificial.

Forward motivation is courtesy of Lexus’ naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6, which puts out 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque; it doesn’t make much sound, unfortunately, but the notes it does emit have the appropriate level of refinement. The power and torque figures are competitive for the market, but the torque curve is not as good as that of forced-induction alternatives like the Infiniti Q60 3.0t — the Lexus’ peak torque arrives at 4,800 rpm, while the Infiniti’s sits at its 295 lb-ft peak from 1,600 to 5,200 rpm. The real-world effect is that there’s not as much low-end grunt as you might like, which impacts performance on tight roads like GMR, especially at altitude. Lexus estimates a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds and a 14.3 second quarter-mile time, performance that is roughly equivalent to that of a V-6-powered Honda Accord.

Braking duty is handled by 13.2-inch ventilated discs up front and 12.2-inchers in the rear. They bite progressively and predictably, fitting the car’s sporty character. They are nothing special, but nothing to complain about, either.

On the “being seen in” side of things, Lexus’ spindle grille remains odd at best, especially with a front license plate mounted to it. Viewed from the side, the RC has a stylish, swoopy profile with plenty of curb appeal, despite the slightly chopped nose. The rear end style would benefit from less-protruding taillights, but the aggressive rear fascia fits the car well. In all, the RC wouldn’t look out of place if it were featured in a futuristic anime series — whether that’s a good or bad thing is a matter of individual taste.

2016 Lexus RC 350 F Sport cabin 02

The interior is a nicely appointed and comfortable place, even for people north of 6-feet tall. Our test car’s white upholstery goes well with the blue exterior, but more conventional colors will be complimented better by black leather — or the available red leather, if you’re so inclined. About the only significant demerit here is the haptic touch controller, which takes some getting used to and is difficult to operate without turning your gaze toward the infotainment screen.

Ultimately, the 2016 Lexus RC 350, in F Sport or regular flavor, is more sport luxury coupe than luxury sport coupe. While it turns quite well, the steering feel and relative lack of low-end torque will leave those desiring a serious driver’s car wanting for more (and they should be calling up their local Ford dealer to inquire about test-driving a Shelby GT350 anyway). Those who want a luxury coupe that they can occasionally take out for a spirited drive, however, may find themselves pleasantly surprised.

Lexus has teased the fifth generation of its LS flagship sedan ahead of its debut at the 2017 Detroit auto show. We can clearly see the design influence of the LF-FC concept that made its debut at the Tokyo auto show last year, along with the new platform underpinning the sedan.

The front end is similar to that of the LF-FC concept, featuring the same wide spindle grille flanked by vertical intakes. We can also faintly see the edge of a narrow headlight, another cue from the LF-FC. We can’t see the car’s rear, but the automaker says the LS will have a “coupe-like silhouette.” Lexus also says the Detroit auto show is a fitting venue for the new LS’ debut, as the first-generation car was unveiled there in 1989 when the brand was launched.

As the sedan’s body fades away, we get a peek at what’s underneath. The LS will ride on Toyota’s new global luxury vehicle architecture, called GA-L. The rear-drive platform is an extended version of the one used in the LC 500, which we recently had the chance to drive. We can’t see the engine, but the car could get the 471-hp 5.0-liter V-8 used in the LC 500. The concept was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, so that could be something we’ll see in a future variant.

We’ll get our first look at the next-gen Lexus LS next month at the Detroit auto show. What do you think the LS needs to compete with other luxury flagships?
