Land Rover will introduce a new generation of its venerable Discovery SUV in 2017, which will replace the LR4 and mark the return of the Discovery name to U.S. shores. According to a report from Automotive News, the next-generation Discovery could take the place of the current-generation Range Rover in the lineup since Land Rover sees an opportunity to move the Range Rover line upmarket. This means the Range Rover will effectively become a competitor to ultra-luxury SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls-Royce’s upcoming SUV, which could be named the Cullinan.

In an interview with Automotive News, Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern revealed that the Range Rover line will become more luxurious while the Discovery and Discovery Sport slot underneath it. McGovern also believes that the Range Rover line has yet to reach its price ceiling, which could indicate that the brand may be going after a more affluent clientele, with off-road-capable SUVs that also happens to be opulent. McGovern also noted that he doesn’t see a Range Rover becoming a true seven-seat SUV because the Discovery will fill that role. However, he also indicated that the 5+2 configuration, which is available on the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, will likely remain.

Moving the Range Rover upmarket could not only see the Discovery step into the segment it formerly occupied but also lead to a member of the upcoming Defender family to fill the spot of the current LR4 (Discovery in other global markets). Currently, the most luxurious Range Rover available is the long wheelbase SVAutobiography model, which seats four and starts at a cool $200,490 including destination.

Every so often, I test-drive a vehicle I don’t want to give back. The new-for-2016 Range Rover Sport HSE Td6 turbodiesel is one of those vehicles. On return day I should’ve told the fleet manager: “Sorry. I can’t find it.”

To start with, all the virtues that make the gas-powered Sport models so desirable are here. The Td6 radiates upper-crust breeding with its imperious stance, rakishly swept-back roofline, and substantial presence. Luxury abounds, from perforated leather seats to touchscreen infotainment, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof, and an 825-watt Meridian audio system (a $1,100 option). And you’ll get wherever you need to go, thanks to full-time all-wheel drive, an electronic air suspension, and a Terrain Response System for automatically tailoring the various traction and control systems for maximum performance in any on- or off-road driving situation.

Yet the Td6 delivers something its gas-fed siblings—which use either a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 or a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8—can only dream about. Namely: 29 mpg on the highway.

Until this model year, diesel Range Rovers have been available only in Europe and some other markets (where they account for as much as 90 percent of sales depending on market). But at last the studly turbodiesel 3.0-liter V-6 is available stateside. Yes, the engine is clean enough to meet U.S. emissions rules, thanks in part to a urea-based exhaust-treatment system that injects the fluid into the exhaust flow to reduce NOx emissions. (The system needs to be refilled every 10,000 miles but is user-friendly enough so owners can do it themselves.) And, no, the diesel doesn’t stink or belch out soot. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed even to know there’s a diesel under the hood at all. From the driver’s seat, only the faintest ticking hints at the engine’s oil-burning nature.

So, yeah, 29 mpg highway, plus a 32 percent improvement in combined mpg versus the base gas V-6. (The big supercharged gas V-8 ekes out a mere 19 mpg on the highway.) What’s more, the Td6 is a torque monster, churning out 443 lb-ft at just 1,750 rpm (the gas V-6 delivers 332 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm). Given the Sport’s 5,300-pound curb weight, the Td6’s bounty of low-end grunt is almost more welcome than its frugality with fuel. The diesel Sport surges forward from stoplights seemingly unburdened by its considerable mass. In fact, the engine never seems to work hard, the eight-speed automatic shifting early and often to keep the crankshaft churning away at low revs—where the turbodiesel is happiest. There’s a luxurious quality to such oomph, a feeling of effortless, unstoppable might—your own elephant barging its way through thick brush.

Annoyingly, the electric gear-selector lever will pull back to the “D” position but won’t actually select Drive until you squeeze the front trigger at the same time. More than once I pulled the lever back only to find I was still in neutral. It’s a pretty minor quibble, though, given the driving experience once you’re underway. Again, the engine is hushed. The air suspension creams over all but the really rough stuff. The cockpit shines with supple leather and Shadow Zebrano wood trim. I made numerous trips with passengers, and every one commented on the lusciousness of this machine. Such appeal is particularly appreciated in a rig that, thanks to its economy with fuel and 23.5-gallon tank, has a theoretical nonstop range of 658 miles.

New this year is optional All-Terrain Progress Control (ATPC), part of the $1,750 Extra Duty package. Once activated, the system will automatically crawl over obstacles or other challenging terrain without the driver needing to touch the throttle. Just set your speed with the cruise-control buttons on the wheel and let ATPC take over. Even in the hills around Malibu I couldn’t dig up any particularly challenging topography. But on a rocky stretch, I did find the system worked as advertised: It just motors along—albeit very slowly—all on its own, smoothly and easily.

You’ll pay a $2,000 premium over the gas V-6 for the Td6, but to me the call is a no-brainer. Yes, eventually the diesel will pay for itself in fuel savings (after roughly 30,000 miles at current gas prices), but I seriously doubt that “saving fuel” is a deciding factor for any buyer willing to pay more than $80,000 for a luxury SUV. A far more compelling draw is that low-end torque, the absolute ease with which this massive rig moves about town and country. It’s that broad-shouldered character, plus the off-road-ready chassis and countless creature comforts that make the Range Rover Sport Td6 such a peerless motoring experience—for driver and passengers alike. Let me tell you: Once you’ve tasted driving at that rarefied level, it’s hard to give it up.

Jaguar Land Rover opened its first fully-owned manufacturing site outside the U.K. today. The plant, located near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will build the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The plant will build upon the JLR’s growing presence in the nation, as sales have increased 11 percent during the first five months of the year. One in three premium SUVs sold in Brazil is a Land Rover model, the automaker says.

The first U.K auto facility in Latin America features several environmentally friendly features, such as rainwater collection and around 1,200 newly planted trees surrounding the area. JLR hopes its new creation will be the first auto plant in Brazil to achieve LEED Gold sustainability accreditation.

JLR has also made it a point to support the Brazilian automotive industry, sourcing major parts like seats, cockpit, exhaust, chassis, and powertrain assembly from local suppliers. Meanwhile, JLR is also investing in Brazil as a nation. The plant includes JLR’s first overseas Education Business Partnership Center, which works to educate up to 12,000 local children every year.

We have known about the new plant for quite a while now. We first reported in late 2014 that JLR was investing $750 million by the end of 2020 to support the production of a number of new models at the plant. Eventually, it will be able to produce 24,000 vehicles a year just for Brazil.

In addition to the Brazil plant, the automaker recently opened a joint venture in China and a new engine plant in Wolverhampton, U.K. It has set aside at least $680 million to double the size of that U.K. facility. Meanwhile, the automaker also plans to build aluminum-intensive cars in Slovakia by late 2018.

The road leads to where the road ends, but what if we feel compelled to continue on, to push farther, harder, and wider to see more of the world than the road shows? That’s when we come to appreciate the kinds of vehicles capable of freeing us from our asphalt and concrete boundaries. Vehicles unbound by traditional notions of what’s possible, that allow us to crawl through lush forests, traverse moss-covered rocks and muddy ruts, and explore uncombed beaches. From classic four-wheel-drive trucks to new-school luxury utes to turbocharged off-road toys, we celebrate the machines that coax man to get away from mankind and go where the pavement ends.

Patagonia, Argentina — This rugged but insanely beautiful corner of South America, the mountainous Patagonia region that spreads into both Argentina and Chile, is nearly the size of Texas yet contains fewer than 2 million inhabitants and is home to some of nature’s most mystifying marvels. The Subaru Outback braved a road with a surface resembling what a Brillo pad looks like under a microscope to get here, the Perito Moreno glacier. It towers 250 feet above the waterline of Lake Argentino, covers roughly 100 square miles, and is said to be the world’s third-largest reserve of fresh water (after, we believe, Lake Superior and the sultan of Brunei’s private stockpile of bathing Perrier). It’s an awesome sight to behold: a seemingly endless mass of craggy, blue-tinted ice that creaks and pops, rumbles like thunder and, every few minutes or so, sheds another huge chunk of itself into the frigid water below. –Arthur St. Antoine

Algodones Dunes, California — In this ocean of sand, where most cars can’t go, one of today’s most rugged and powerful side-by-sides, the Can-Am Maverick X rs Turbo, feels right at home. With long-travel suspension, an exposed tube frame, and a high-output engine, it makes light work of the endless dunes. Its astonishingly strong brakes dig into the sand confidently, and the Maverick changes direction without hesitation. We lose track of our speed, of where we are, and of the fact we’re driving on sand dunes, which often and unexpectedly fall away, leaving you with a big vertical drop. The Maverick launches off the dune, hits the sand headfirst, and comes to rest on its side; we simply dust it off and get back to it. Staring back at the beautiful mess of tracks we’ve made, we realize just how well-built this specialized machine is, handling rollovers and hard hits without balking. Vehicles like this take us farther than cars can, unflinching and eager to explore untouched terrain. –Jonathon Klein

Scenes 01

Los Angeles, California — With two Treks strapped to the Volvo V60 Cross Country’s optional roof rack, we climb through dense forest before the tree line gives way to a stunning vista overlooking downtown Santa Monica. Sullivan Trail here has fast sweepers, rolling hillcrests, and big kickers—perfect for mountain biking. It’s a tough trail, and we’re glad we followed friend and pro rider Philip Birschbach’s line through a particularly steep section. Another friend, and Automobile’s social media guru, Chris Bacarella, doesn’t, opting for a line that ends with a sheer drop to solid concrete. He falls straight on his tailbone but pops up like a champ and walks in circles trying to shake off the slam. When we get back to the Volvo, Philip and I place our bikes onto the roof-mounted runners as Chris slowly lowers himself into one of the V60’s supple leather seats. –Sandon Voelker

Scenes 04

Johannesburg, Michigan — The BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires on the bright-purple Jeep Wrangler Backcountry Unlimited 4×4 claw helplessly against the frozen ground. We’re stuck in axle-high powder and won’t get free without using a pair of inappropriately named sand ladders. We bury arms in the snow and dig around the big, knobby tires until our fingers are numb. Back in the Wrangler, we engage the Backcountry’s locking rear differential and go for it, charging up and over a snowbank as our passenger white-knuckles the Wrangler’s “oh crap” handle on the passenger-side dashboard. We bound along northern Michigan’s most challenging trails, sporadically coming across other stuck souls in need of assistance. We brave the cold again and again, break out our kinetic recovery rope and tether the other cars to our Backcountry’s front shackle points. It’s a fun and fulfilling day that ends when even our bones feel cold. On the road home, we simply flip a switch back into two-high mode, which is all the Jeep needs to go from quintessential off-roader to comfortable commuter. –Sandon Voelker

Cottonwood Canyon Road, Utah — The Land Rover Discovery’s leather-wrapped steering wheel, cream-colored seats, high-pile carpeting, and soft-touch dashboard are caked with the same thick, gray mud bogging down the tires. We lay down a set of plastic Maxtrax recovery boards ahead of the front tires, which help the Disco get going again, but it immediately sinks back into the mud. We try again and again, but after an hour the mud-covered Maxtrax boards weigh about 100 pounds each, and the SUV has moved 100 yards, maybe. The nine-speed automatic transmission starts to cut power and short-shift into second gear, but we grind on, which causes the Rover to default to front-wheel drive and throw an engine code. We finally call a tow truck after a huge chunk of mud flies from the Disco’s spinning tires and hits one of us squarely and forcefully in the, er, yeah. A haul to the closest dealership, 200 miles away in Las Vegas, costs $1,875. Maybe we should’ve given more heed to the sign at the start of the trail that read, “Impassable When Wet.” –Chris Nelson

Scenes 06

Moab, Utah — If a Hellcat supercharger whines in the desert and nobody is there to hear it, it’s because the 707-horsepower Jeep Trailcat is long gone. Or maybe it’s because, for once, the high-pressure blower’s foreboding spool is drowned out by something other than the screech of rubber on pavement. Red rocks crunch beneath the Trailcat’s 39.5-inch tires, as its modified Wrangler body barrels its way across the craggy red landscape. Managing to filter out unfamiliar clouds of dirt and sand, the Hellcat engine sucks in greedy gulps of air through extra venting in its surprisingly roomy Rubicon hood. Out here the 6.2-liter V-8 enjoys riding high, free to unleash its fury away from other cars, and especially out of sight from the boys in blue. Only in this earthen vacuum does something so ridiculous, so unhinged from the normal grind, make a perfect sort of sense. –Eric Weiner

Of the 68 teams tearing through the thankless desolation of the Arizona desert, only 19 manage to complete the 2016 Best in the Desert Mint 400 Rally. And when the Ford F-150 Raptor race truck crosses the finish line it becomes the only full-size factory stock-class truck to do so, leaving dozens of dedicated off-roaders literally in the dust.–Eric Weiner

Large luxury SUVs are like cable television. There’s still a big market out there, but it’s becoming more difficult to stay current as the market changes at such a rapid pace. In television, the internet has been the disruptive force of change, while in the automotive industry, fuel efficiency and emissions regulations are pushing automakers to pursue ever more advanced technologies and solutions. But are diesel and electric variants of big SUVs like the Range Rover Sport Td6 and the plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive40e really shaking things up Netflix- and Hulu-style?

 

Nothing new about diesel

The Range Rover Sport Td6 is but the latest stop on a well-traveled path, beaten down over the years with plenty of diesel engines. After all, diesel engines are already installed in 90 percent of Range Rover models sold in Europe. The 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 under the Rover’s hood makes 254 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, and it improves fuel economy by a whopping 6 mpg combined compared to the Range Rover Sport’s standard 3.0-liter supercharged gasoline V-6. And now that diesel emissions are under so much scrutiny due to the Volkswagen emissions scandal, know that the Range Rover meets all requirements thanks to a urea solution in place to convert nitrogen-oxide emissions into pure nitrogen.

Drive it, and it doesn’t take long to understand why this powertrain is so popular on the Continent. The torque-rich V-6 pulls strongly from low rpm, making this engine a natural companion to this big brute’s solid, stoic personality. The long-travel throttle pedal means it is easy to make small adjustments as you tap into the strong torque band, which produces the full 443 lb-ft from as early as 1,750 rpm. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and quickly, and the Range Rover is quite responsive to sudden throttle changes. Ask for a kickdown and the transmission ably abides, and the diesel engine pulls the 4,730-pound SUV along with authority. It’s not quite as sonorous as the gasoline V-6 also offered in the Range Rover Sport, but that’s a trade-off we’re more than willing to make for the diesel’s smooth performance and much-improved fuel economy.

Electricity is more of a novelty

The BMW is a bit more innovative, not to mention more complex. As the company’s second-ever plug-in hybrid after the AUTOMOBILE All-Star-winning i8 sports car, the X5 eDrive is packed with advanced electrification technology. A 2.0-liter, gasoline turbo-four engine combines with an electric motor to provide a healthy total system output of 308 hp and 332 lb-ft. Operating in standard hybrid mode, the BMW offers a 4-mpg boost in EPA combined numbers compared to the six-cylinder gasoline X5, though its 24 mpg combined actually falls short of the 26 mpg that BMW’s own X5 diesel provides.

The X5 eDrive’s real kicker, then, is the electric plug found on the driver’s side front fender. When hooked up to a Level 1 or Level 2 charger, it charges a beefed-up battery pack that allows the X5 to operate on all-electric power up to 75 mph. Driving the X5 in electric mode is a disconcerting experience, and that’s not meant as a bad thing. With utter silence and instantaneous torque from the electric motor, the sizable X5 shrinks around you as you maneuver city streets without a whisper from gas engine. Even though it weighs 5,220 pounds, the X5 takes on the character of an urban runabout when it needs to. It’s almost like driving a bigger, raised Nissan Leaf with a much nicer interior.

We say “almost” because the silence of all-electric driving is noticeably short-lived. The EPA rates the X5 for 14 miles of electric range on a full charge, and that estimate was mostly borne out in our driving, except in colder temperatures when it would more often yield about 12 miles. Once you run out of juice, the X5 runs in normal hybrid mode, trading off power between the gasoline four-cylinder and the electric motor like a conventional parallel hybrid. The transitions are mostly seamless, and the combined power of the drivetrain is more than sufficient.

MPG in the real world

Despite all the widely disparate approaches to fuel efficiency, real-world results couldn’t have been closer after we spent 600 miles driving both SUVs in a variety of conditions. The BMW slightly edged out the Range Rover, at 21.8 mpg to the Brit’s 21.3 mpg.

Of course, those numbers come with plenty of caveats. The Range Rover might have done better if we had spent more time on the highway, while more city driving would have favored the BMW. The amount of fuel you use in the X5 is also hugely dependent on how often you plug it in. We can imagine some owners going weeks between fill-ups if the X5 plugs in at home and at work, especially if it’s mostly used for short trips.

When it comes down to it, the crucial difference between the two is that the BMW requires more of a lifestyle adjustment than the Range Rover does. The X5’s myriad energy display graphics and adjustable charging settings are great for eco-conscious early adopters. Like Chevrolet Volt owners, those who are willing to spend the extra time to hook up a home charging adapter, look for public charging stations, and generally stay aware of X5’s state of charge will be able to maximize its use of electricity in exchange for their vigilance.

With the Range Rover, the addition of a more efficient powertrain requires almost no compromise from your typical luxury SUV buyer. Not only does it cost only $1,500 extra compared to a gasoline-powered Range Rover (the BMW hybrid is $5,100 more than its gasoline equivalent), the diesel engine’s quiet, refined, and torquey character doesn’t present any clear drawbacks. The only adjustment you’ll have to make is remembering to grab a different pump at the gas station. Easy as signing up for Netflix, no?

Some equipment and design upgrades are on the way for the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport, some of which we’re a little bummed we couldn’t have for our Four Seasons Disco Sport. There are no mechanical changes, but buyers can now opt for a few bits of advanced tech, as well as a wider range of color and trim options.

New for the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport is a Black Limited Edition trim, which builds on the current Black Design Pack and can be had either with Silicon Silver, Yulong White, or Carpathian Grey base paint. The Limited Edition adds a new Dynamic grille, privacy glass, and black-colored SPORT badging. There is also a new Dynamic Design Pack for HSE and HSE Lux models, adding more aggressive front and rear bumpers with integrated tailpipes, as well as black detailing to match the glossy 20-inch wheels. The Discovery Sport with Dynamic Design Pack starts at $38,690.

The Dynamic Design Pack also includes some new technology and safety features that are now available in the Land Rover Discovery Sport range. First is the new 10.2-inch InControl Touch Pro display screen, which is a big step up from the standard 8-inch InControl Touch screen. With Pro you get a wider net of connected apps, as well as a much faster quad-core Intel processor with a 60GB solid-state drive. We just sampled this screen on the new Jaguar F-Pace, and it’s incredibly quick to respond to pinches and swipes for the navigation module, all without needing to wait for tiles to load.

Safety equipment like lane keep assist, a driver condition monitor to avoid drowsy driving, and an intelligent speed limiter to avoid accidentally speeding is now available as well.

Land Rover is also touting integration of Tile technology in the 2017 Discovery Sport, which aims to prevent you from losing important day-to-day items while shuffling around your usual routes. A little Bluetooth tracker can be attached to items like keys, cell phones, or tablets, and the display screen in the car will indicate if an item is missing. If it’s been left somewhere, the car will route you to where it’s located.

I’m picking mud out of my eyelashes as I fumble to find the 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport’s starter button. The Disco’s leather-wrapped steering wheel, cream-colored seats, high-pile carpeting, and soft-touch dashboard are caked with the same thick, wet gray mud bogging down the tires. I reach for my seatbelt before yelling to our muck-covered photographer, Robin Trajano, “I’m not buckling up in case I need to bail out.” He nods just as our tow vehicle starts crawling, the bungee VooDoo towrope becomes taut, and the Land Rover Discovery Sport starts sliding toward a cliff.

Disco will save us

We needed a support vehicle for a photo shoot and since we’d be going on an off-road trek across the gritty Southwest with three small crossovers, our Four Seasons Land Rover Discovery Sport seemed like the obvious choice—a spacious SUV with a four-mode Terrain Response traction system. So our road test editor Eric Weiner and motor gopher Jason Lanham took the Landie from Los Angeles to Taos in New Mexico, 900 miles away. After a day of skiing and snowboarding, our convoy headed west to Lake Powell, just south of Utah’s Grand Staircase Escalante-National Monument, where we’d do some light off-roading.

Impassable? Impossible

Videographer Sandon Voelker drove the Disco on Cottonwood Canyon Road, the rutted dirt two-track leading to Grand Staircase, just 10 days ago. When he returned from his trip, he sent me this email: “Conditions were good for this season. Dirt was frozen and firm. There were some patches of snow a few inches deep and some sections of pure ice. If conditions for our trip are the same, we won’t have any issues. If it snows more, things will likely get icier. If it warms up, things will get very muddy and impassable for our cars.” Thankfully, it’s clear and 7 below freezing, so we confidently set off down Cottonwood Canyon Road. The Landie leads, trundling through big puddles and mud pits, sliding sideways through sloppier corners. The three crossovers in tow follow suit as the caravan bombs down the trail, stopping only when Trajano says we need to take some pictures.

The thickening mud gobbles up our shoes; mine fall off when I try to walk. Temperatures are still below freezing, but the bright sun has been beaming down for a few hours now, melting small piles of snow and thawing the cold ground. While I’ve thankfully never confronted quicksand, I assume it’s a lot like this. Voelker says we need get back to the main road as soon as possible, but he’s a worrywart, the photos look great, and we’re having way too much fun to leave now. So what if the carpets get a little mud on them?

Well, this is unexpected…

The three small crossovers are starting to get stuck, which is our cue to load up and leave. It’s a shame we won’t be seeing Grand Staircase, but at least we’ll get to spend more time in Vegas tonight. Most of the crew divvy up the three crossovers and take off as Trajano and I climb into the Discovery, being careful not to track mud through the light interior. The Land Rover spins its tires, praying to find traction, inching forward as chunks of mud and dirt fly off the tires and slap against the windows. I put the Terrain Response system into Mud-Ruts mode, which seems to help. We slowly creep through the sludge. Voelker called it: “Things will get very muddy and impassable for our cars.” What’s strange, though, is while the three crossovers handily conquer Cottonwood, never once getting hung up, our Disco is getting stuck. Again and again and again.

This is hell

The Land Rover Discovery Sport won’t move. Its tires are coated in several inches of thick mud, which caused the rear fender liners to pop out. Since digging out the mud with our hands isn’t going well in the cold, Voelker drives one of the small crossovers—the surprisingly capable Porsche Macan—back to Trajano and me, bringing along his bright orange Maxtrax and VooDoo recovery rope. Trajano gets into Disco’s driver seat as Voelker and I set the Maxtrax down ahead of the SUV’s front tires. The car edges onto the Maxtrax, which help it get going, but the SUV immediately sinks back into the mud. Voelker and I try again. And again and again and again. After an hour, the mud-covered Maxtrax weigh about 100 pounds each, Voelker and I are panting, and the Disco has moved 100 yards, maybe. A huge chunk of mud, flung from the Disco’s spinning tires, hits me squarely and forcefully in the nads. We need a new plan.

Have hope

The Landie comes with a tow hook, but the only receiver is on the rear of the car. The Macan, our unwitting tow vehicle, is parked in front of the Rover. We’re worried about moving either much and getting more stuck, so I unwisely suggest we hook up the two cars how they are and try rotating the Disco. The Macan blasts forward and yanks on the reversing Disco, which spins perfectly in place. We’re rejuvenated. We put the Maxtrax under the Porsche, which claws its way through the mud before the 4,300-pound anchor behind digs into the ground. We make good progress until the Land Rover’s nine-speed automatic transmission neuters us by constantly cutting power and short shifting into second gear. We grind through it, which causes the Rover to default to front-wheel drive and throw an engine code. I shut down the SUV, pop its hood, and shovel handfuls of snow into the engine bay and onto the heat-soaked turbo-four.

“We’ll give it one more try,” I say. I tell Trajano I won’t be buckling up just as the Macan tugs on the Discovery. The Disco starts sliding to the left of the slightly cambered road, so I correct by steering to the right. It does nothing; there’s absolutely no feedback from the Disco’s front end. Sliding faster now, I reach for the radio on the passenger seat so I can tell Voelker to hold up, but I accidently push the radio off the cushion and onto the floor. I see the edge of a cliff in the side-view mirror and grab the driver’s door handle, ready to jump out, when Trajano screams for Voelker to stop. He does, just as the Disco’s left rear tire falls off the road. “Fuck this, we’re calling a tow truck,” I yell. We dejectedly unload the Rover, slog up to the Macan, and leave.

Disco is dead to me

A tow to the closest dealership, 200 miles away in Vegas, cost $1,875. Repairs included replacing a range of damaged moldings and splashguards, but we don’t know how much they would’ve set us back since Land Rover North America footed the bill. Good thing, too, since the labor alone might’ve put us out of business, seeing how basically every nook and cranny of the car needed to be power-washed. When I go to pick up the Discovery from Land Rover Las Vegas, the salesmen looks at me with a mix of disgust and admiration. I feel similarly when I first see the squeaky clean Land Rover, sans the admiration part. If I’d been alone, wandered off the highway onto Cottonwood, and gotten the Disco stuck, I would’ve felt horrible that I’d stupidly pushed an off-road vehicle beyond its threshold. But I have not one, not two, but three reasons to believe the Discovery is nothing but a cushy and complacent crossover that should never go near a dirt road. Picking mud out of your eyelashes hurts like hell.

Much to the chagrin of fans around the world, the outgoing generation of the rough-and-ready Land Rover Defender is no more.  The rugged SUV was renowned for its unrelenting capability when the road turned muddy and rocky, and played an irreplaceable role cementing Land Rover’s overland reputation. Now, to fill that gap in the brand’s lineup, reports say new off-road-ready SVX models of both the Discovery and the next-generation Defender are on the way.

According to a report from Autocar, the next-generation Land Rover Discovery will feature a special SVX variant that is more at home mirror-deep in muck and gravel than cruising the city tarmac. Whereas some automakers are content with simply slapping on aggressive rubber and a lifted suspension to create their off-road packages, the SVX will be a product from Jaguar Land Rover’s SVO division, which takes things rather seriously.

According to Autocar, under the tutelage of the SVO division, the SVX will pack a host of cutting-edge off-road technology. Rather than simply relying on mechanical capability, the SVX will likely utilize the extensive catalog of Jaguar Land Rover’s technology, including JLR’s extensive development in cameras and autonomous technologies.

While the Discovery SVX is still being considered, the future Defender is almost guaranteed to receive the SVX treatment, according to Autocar. The new Defender, which we reported on extensively earlier last year, should arrive sometime around 2018, with a more luxury-focused attitude than the bare-as-a-bathtub Defender of yore. The modularity of the old Defender will remain, with five predicted bodystyles made available, including two- and four-door variants, with both hard- and soft-top roofs available for each configuration.

Autocar also reports on an upcoming Range Rover more suited to cruising around Beverly Hills than scaling the Black Hills. A new unnamed coupe-like SUV is set to compete with the BMW X6 on showroom floors, being the first SUV of this style from the storied English automaker. The new SUV should share the same bones as the Jaguar F-Pace, using that model’s alloy chassis and powertrains, but with a Range Rover badge and unique styling. Like the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the new Range Rover will feature a four-seat arrangement, with a focus on a more “cockpit”-style cabin, according to Autocar.

COURCHEVEL, SAINT-BON-TARENTAISE, France — The snow is five-feet deep outside the 53 rooms of L’Apogée Courchevel, one of the newest and most beautiful hotels in this alluring ski village. The temperature outside is hovering around freezing, but that isn’t stopping us from blithely dropping the four windows of the 2017 Range Rover Evoque Convertible and retracting its five-layer, fabric top. The operation, conducted in 21 silent seconds, has been tested at temperatures as low as minus-40 degrees Fahrenheit, so the present conditions are nothing.

We commence our refreshing drive, twisting and turning uphill until the road surpasses 6,500 feet in elevation. It ends at Courchevel Altiport, one of the world’s trickiest airstrips, where an Alpine Airlines Vulcanair P68TC Observer has just completed the harrowing, upslope landing.

Range Rover, which has taken pains to bill its new creation as the world’s first four-seat, four-wheel-drive, four-passenger luxury convertible, has set up across the road on a snowmobile course. Instead of being met by a St. Bernard with a brandy cask, we find driving instructors in a hut with coffee and a crackling fire. Still with the top down, we welcome Coach Will to the shotgun seat for a couple of laps around the circuit. “Pick a fresh track,” Will says. “Carry lots of speed up this hill!”

With the default electronic settings active, the Evoque Convertible’s response in the turns is like ordering a Popsicle and getting a Slurpee instead. But then we switch off the DSC and drive more by our BVDs; the livelier throttle lets us induce easily controlled oversteer. Tipping the scales at 4,268 pounds, this Empire-waisted vehicle moves as deliberately as the Empress Joséphine after one of Foreign Minister Talleyrand’s feasts. We continue around the course, snow slewing from the 20-inch Pirelli Scorpions, and finally get back to the hut. “Well driven,” Will says.

The previous day we had gone the other direction: down the mountainside. Fluttering before chalets and farmhouses we passed along the way was the flag of Savoie: a white cross extending to the edges of a rectangular red field. This banner, representing the former duchy that has been part of France since 1860, dates to the 14th century. Initially, the four red sections cryptically carried the letters FERT, an allusion to the Latin words extolling the Duke of Savoie’s defense of the Isle of Rhodes against the Saracens.

After we descended the couloir—no small undertaking—and finally reached the valley of the L’Isère River, the season changed to early spring, and the Evoque Convertible relished being in its element. It lolloped along the motorway, affording us natural conversation. Thanks to its excellent aerodynamic design and the wind-blocker screen (a two-person job to set in place) there was no buffeting, not even when we dared the speed cameras with an extralegal pace. Range Rover says 0 to 60 mph comes in 7.8 seconds, with a top speed of 112 mph. The powertrain consists of a turbocharged 240-hp, direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine matched to an unobtrusive nine-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain took a facelessly bureaucratic approach to its task of motivating the vehicle.

The Evoque Convertible made its debut as a concept vehicle not far from here at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. In the four intervening years, the development team figured out how to strengthen the A-pillars, brace the underbody, and fortify the sills. The result is said to produce “comparable” stiffness to the hardtop model, although we never did hear exactly how closely they compared. The team also added a pair of rollover protectors, aluminum columns that shoot out from behind the rear-seat headrests in the blink of even a jaundiced eye. And they arranged four electric motors to operate what’s touted as the longest and widest convertible roof ever fitted to a production vehicle. Pulling up the center-console switch raises the roof in 18 seconds, even as the vehicle travels as fast as 30 mph.

Our tester was painted dark gray, wore a discreet rear spoiler, and belabored an already tedious trend with its black wheels and trim. We weren’t aware of people staring at us from their Renault Meganes or the faded old Renault 4 that nipped through a roundabout ahead of us. Nevertheless we felt conspicuous, as though we were tootling along in the bathtub from that Cialis commercial. As we proceeded, the steering column occasionally shuddered on rough pavement; otherwise, the Evoque Convertible performed with great composure.

Before our departure for France, more than one person asked, “Are you going to mention the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet?” Mais oui! But when considering the Evoque Convertible, the mind most naturally went to another “halo” vehicle: the 1948 Willys-Overland Jeepster. Based on a station wagon’s body, the Jeepster, a pokey four-seater, was the first postwar car to answer an unasked question. Yet it hung around in the used-car market, was revived for production after a 17-year interval, and even lent its name to a T. Rex song, setting a high bar for would-be successors.

Our lunchtime destination of Bourdeau, a village on the western shore of Lake Bourget, lay just beyond Chambéry, the capital of Savoie. We were expected at Restaurant Lamartine, which perches with its Michelin star where “cavorting sloping sides” meet the long and deep body of water. Indeed, Lake Bourget provided inspiration for the Romantic Period poet Alphonse de Lamartine, author of “The Lake.” A passionate meditation on lost love and fleeting time, it retains its music even in English translation. What might be overlooked is that Lamartine was also statesman who strove for French liberty and egalitarianism before his career faded and he ended up — quelle horreur! — editing a monthly.

Our postprandial activity brought a taste of the Evoque Convertible’s offroad prowess. By following navigation prompts on the 10.2-inch screen, we arrived at a back at the L’Isére to traversing a slopeside trail with the help of more spotters and coaches. It was an exercise that highlighted our ambivalence about the Evoque Convertible. While the all-terrain technology got us down a steep, rocky section, the brake pedal had to be used extensively because the vehicle wouldn’t exactly creep. Meantime, we felt a bit conspicuous undertaking this on low-profile tires and dandy rims. It was the type of endeavor that probably wouldn’t earn us ridicule in the Hamptons or Malibu, but it sure would from the people of Moab or the Rubicon. Meanwhile, the frameless doors meant that when left up, the front window glass rattled like perturbed squirrels.

As the afternoon waned, we left the Isére lowlands, climbing again about 4,500 feet to Courchevel for one more night of winter. And there was time to reflect on the Evoque Convertible’s merits and demerits. Yes, it’s exclusive, attractive, has a well laid out and luxurious interior, and delivers a pleasant and refined driving experience. The convertible top comes up (and down) aces.

Just be warned: This expensive compact SUV sacrifices utility in the name of sport. With the top up, entry to the backseat could result in a visit to the orthopedist. And those rear seats need to stay in place to help provide structural rigidity. That leaves just 8.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity; the pass-through will accept only one pair of skis—and not a snowboard.

What the trunk will unquestionably hold are a couple of beach bags and a picnic hamper. How far from here to Spain and the Costa Brava?

When I hear the name Land Rover Discovery, I instantly think back to VHS tape recordings of the Camel Trophy. A convoy of yellow Discoveries outfitted with winches and sand ladders piloted by top-notch off-roaders who had never heard the term “impassable.” In my young imagination, the original Land Rover Discovery was the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle.

As I toss some camping gear and a few off-roading essentials in the back of our Four Seasons Land Rover Discovery Sport, I realize this is a bit of a dream come true. Like a modern explorer, my job for the weekend is to scout an off-road route for an upcoming vehicle comparison. It’s not quite Camel Trophy, but driving through mud in Utah rarely disappoints.

The Discovery soaks up highway miles with ease. Its smooth ride and quiet cabin make for a relaxing afternoon cruise across the desert from Los Angeles to Utah. Soon night falls, and the temperature drops to the teens. I exit the pavement and start my journey down Cottonwood Canyon Road, a seasonally open trail only a few miles from the Arizona border. I make my way in just a few miles before pulling off to set up camp for the night inside the Discovery. It’s a cinch to drop the back seat and unroll my sleeping bag and pillow into the 66.9 inches of cargo space, and I’m soon drifting to sleep under a band of stars shining through the Discovery’s massive panoramic glass roof.

Before sunrise I’m already awake, packing up my sleeping gear and breaking out the portable stove for some boil-in-bag breakfast. As the sun breaks over the canyon walls, it illuminates the brilliant red rocks that make up the Grand Staircase-Escalante, creating a warm contrast against cool blue sky as well as the crisp snow that has settled in the valley. With a hot meal in my belly and heated seat on my bum, I set off down Cottonwood Canyon Road to find out just how bad the conditions are. Even with the heat of the sun, the ground is still frozen solid, and the Land Rover Discovery Sport marches on down the dirt road cautiously but relatively unfazed.

The road is proves passible, but it does expose some of the Disco’s inherent off-road shortcomings. Traversing two-track trails covered in snow and ice is a bit treacherous with the factory-mounted Pirelli Scorpion Verde all-season tires. They’re great for rolling over freeways around Los Angeles, but out here in the snow and dirt the compound is far too stiff, and the tread doesn’t offer enough siping to adequately clear snow and mud.

As soon I reach some technical terrain that requires a bit more throttle finesse, the combination of a turbocharged four-cylinder and a nine-speed transmission prove problematic. The gearbox likes to kick down at the most inconvenient times, suddenly spinning the tires too fast when a more measured approach is needed. I resort instead to manually shifting with the steering wheel-mounted paddles, so I can have more control over the situation. I’m also nervous because it turns out that the Discovery Sport’s traction control system isn’t entirely defeatable. So if I happen to find myself in a “when in doubt, throttle out” situation, I’m left to rely on computers instead of my hands, feet, and eyes.

Fortunately that’s not something I needed to test all by myself, with at least 15 miles of dirt and shrubs between me and the closest civilization. I do manage to find the combination of patience and throttle, and finally I’m deep into the trail and ready to find my way back. Once I’m back on paved roads I let out a breath of relief, more sure the 2016 Land Discovery Sport is back on terrain it can handle.
