Kia has revealed its fourth-generation Rio ahead of the car’s official debut at the Paris Motor Show in a few weeks. Although it’s slightly bigger than the old model, the new Kia Rio looks more refined with its squarer body.

The hatch receives a flat face with a squared-off grille, similar to the one we’ve seen in earlier renderings. Ditching the bug-eyed look of the previous Rio, thinner headlights project a new U-shaped LED light signature on the new model. The small car also dons a more upright C-pillar and shorter rear overhang for a sportier appeal. A new character line runs across the car’s headlights, shoulders, along its doors, and to the rear, which features thinner taillights.

The automaker has expanded the Rio’s dimensions a bit, although it’s hardly noticeable. It’s now 15 mm longer than its predecessor and 5 mm wider. Just 10 mm have been added to the wheelbase, although the car is now 5 mm shorter in height.

Inside the cabin, look for gloss black and metallic accents as well as a new stand-alone touchscreen that sits high up on the dashboard. Kia says the Rio will offer black or grey cloth seats, black or grey artificial leather seats, and special black and red artificial leather seats.

The fourth-gen Kia Rio will debut in the flesh and blood on September 29 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It heads to production toward the end of this year in Europe, but Kia still hasn’t given a timeline for other markets including the U.S. In our market, the Rio was just given a pretty significant update for 2016.

Kia will debut its fourth-generation Rio subcompact at the Paris auto show next month, the automaker announced today.

Renderings of the hatchback hint at a striking new design. Not only do they show off a Kia Rio with a low and planted stance and a longer wheelbase, but they also preview narrower headlights and a squarer lower grille. A raked roofline, refreshed taillights, and massive wheels finish off the exterior look. Judging from the interior, the car doesn’t even look like a Rio anymore, as it features a multi-layered dashboard and large touchscreen. We bet the real car’s cabin won’t look quite like this, but the drawing does signal a more mature design.

Fourth gen Kia Rio Interior Renderingjpg

“The all-new Rio will offer buyers class-leading practicality and safety technology, the latest connectivity features, and more assured and engaging ride and handling characteristic,” Kia promises.

Designers from Germany, California, and Korea worked together to create the car’s new look. Globally, the Rio is Kia’s best-selling model, and more than 473,000 copies were sold in 2015. The fourth-gen Rio will enter production toward the end of this year in Europe, but Kia still hasn’t given a timeline for other markets including the U.S. On our shores, the Rio was just updated for 2016.

The new Kia Rio debuts September 29 at the Paris Motor Show. And if reports are correct, we could see a high-performance Rio GT around 2018.

The Kia Soul is full of character and charm but it hasn’t really had much to offer in terms of power and driving dynamics. But that may soon change, as Kia has quietly confirmed via a commercial that the Soul will indeed offer another engine choice this winter. That engine option is likely the same 1.6-liter turbo-four found in various Hyundai and Kia vehicles like the Forte, Optima, Sonata, Tucson, and Veloster.

We originally reported in late 2014 that the Soul will be getting a much-needed infusion of performance to broaden the car’s appeal. However, thanks to a new version of Kia’s latest hamster-packed commercial, we now have confirmation that a sportier, turbocharged variant is coming. The 1.6-liter turbo-four makes 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque in sportier applications like the Veloster turbo and Forte turbo. While a six-speed manual transmission is something we’d like in a sporty Soul, it’s unknown if the Soul turbo will get a row-your-own option. Do expect a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, however.

Kia has shown two Soul concepts in the past that featured turbocharged engines, the Track’ster and the Trail’ster. The Track’ster was powered by a 250-hp 2.0-liter turbo-four while the Trail’ster had a 1.6-liter turbo-four coupled to an electric motor for a total system output of 220 hp and 285 lb-ft.

Besides the release date of winter 2016, no solid information on the turbocharged Soul has been revealed. But should you want all-wheel drive to go with your turbocharged hamstermobile, you may have to wait for the third-generation Soul because Kia isn’t planning to add it to the current model even though dealers have been fighting tooth and nail for it.

Check out the latest commercial below for the quiet confirmation of the Soul turbo.

For the first time in 27 years, a non-premium brand has ranked highest in J.D. Power and Associates’ Initial Quality Study. With a score of 83 PP100, Kia ranked highest in the study. This is the Korean automaker’s second year topping the non-premium brand list.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study tracks new vehicle problems during the first 90 days of ownership. PP100 refers to the number of problems per 100 vehicles. Brands are ranked by lowest number of problems.

Porsche came in second place with 84 PP100, while Hyundai came in third place with 92 PP100. Toyota (93 PP100) and BMW (94 PP100) round out the top five. J.D. Power recognized Chrysler and Jeep as the most improved brands with each nameplate having 28 less problems per 100 than the previous year.

Overall, initial quality is up across the automotive market. According to J.D. Power, 21 of the 33 brands showed improvement in 2016 compared to last year with one brand staying steady.

2016 JD Power Initial Quality Study IQS rankings

“Manufacturers are currently making some of the highest quality products we’ve ever seen,” said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. automotive quality at J.D. Power, in a release. “Tracking our data over the past several years, it has become clear that automakers are listening to the customer, identifying pain points and are focused on continuous improvement. Even as they add more content, including advanced technologies that have had a reputation for causing problems, overall quality continues to improve.”

Additionally, seven GM models earned awards as did six models from Toyota. This year also marks the second time in the study’s 30-year history that U.S. automakers scored a higher average score than import brands, at 103 PP100 versus 106 PP100. U.S. automakers saw an improvement of 10 percent from 2015, while import automakers saw an improvement of just 5 percent. Additionally, non-premium brands (104 PP100) had fewer problems than premium brands (108 PP100).

“There is a direct correlation between the number of problems a customer has with their new vehicle and the decisions they make when it comes time to purchase or lease their next car or truck,” said Stephens. “While a small drop in actual loyalty may not sound like much, a percentage point drop in share can mean millions of dollars in lost revenue to an automaker.”

Our spy photographers have caught the 2018 Kia GT prototype, codenamed “CK,” undergoing testing on public roads in Germany. This could mean that Kia is putting its upcoming rear-drive sports sedan through high-intensity performance testing on the autobahn, and possibly the Nürburgring race track before its official debut, which will likely be at the 2016 Paris auto show in October.

Like the last prototype we spied, this one is still covered in camo. However, now we can see the GT’s LED daytime running lights, which look like it has a different pattern than current Kia models. The GT’s “tiger nose” grille is also a little more visible and it appears that it could feature more rounded edges than the iteration found on Kia’s current lineup. Most of the GT concept’s exterior design cues look to have been retained or toned down slightly on its way to production.

Expect the car to feature similar proportions to the concept, which means it’ll be sized in between the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Genesis sedan (soon to be called the Genesis G80). The GT will be one of Kia’s premium offerings alongside the new Cadenza and the full-size K900, but unlike those two, the GT will be the performance-oriented model. Rear-wheel drive should be standard while all-wheel drive could be a possible option.

Under the hood, Hyundai/Kia’s new 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6, which first debuted in the Genesis G90 and will also be available in the G80 and a less-powerful engine choice could be offered in the production GT. In the Genesis G90, the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 is rated at 365 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque but our spies say that Kia could extract closer to 400 hp for duty in the GT. An eight-speed automatic transmission may only be the only gearbox available.

Last week, we reported that in some global markets the GT could start under $30,000 USD and that it may wear the Stinger name when it debuts.

With the small crossover being red hot across the globe, automakers are quickly rustling up their entries into the growing segment. Kia is the latest, apparently working on a rival to the segment’s handling champ, the Mazda CX-3. According to a report from Australia’s Motoring, the South Korean brand’s CX-3 rival will be part of a new generation of small cars coming next year, which also includes the next-generation Rio subcompact.

Damien Meredith, Kia Australia’s COO, spoke with Motoring and said that their new small crossover could debut at either the 2016 Los Angeles auto show in November or early next year at the 2017 Detroit auto show.  Meredith made it clear that their entry into the small crossover segment is aimed directly at the CX-3 but he also acknowledged that it could also eat into sales of the Rio. In the U.S., Kia’s yet-to-be-named small crossover has the potential to eat into the sales of at least three cars in its lineup, the Rio, Soul and Forte.

The exterior design of the new small crossover will come from the Provo Concept, which was originally shown at the 2013 Geneva auto show. Due to the addition of another crossover slotting under the Sportage, Meredith told Motoring that the Soul will be repositioned at the same time it receives a mid-cycle refresh, which includes the addition of a turbocharged variant.

Kia’s new small crossover should go on sale next year just after the next-generation Rio, which is reportedly scheduled to debut at this year’s Paris auto show. The Korean brand’s upcoming rear-drive sports sedan based on the GT Concept that first debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show will also launch next year. That car is tipped to use the Stinger name from the GT4 Stinger Concept that was shown at the 2014 Detroit auto show. A 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6 is expected to be offered.

Kia’s iconic hamsters have returned for a musical-themed 2016 Kia Soul hatchback commercial. The new 60-second spot will first debut in theaters in National CineMedia’s FirstLook pre-show program. Set to air this weekend, the ad will be shown across more than 34,000 movie screens.

In the latest installment of the hamster saga, the original chubby cartoonish hamsters return with an ode to the classic “Dueling Banjos” skit. The new ad, dubbed “Soul Jam,” begins with Nathaniel Rateliff of Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats playing guitar in the park. A banjo-playing hamster hops out of a 2016 Kia Soul and the two musicians start battling. More musical hamsters arrive, and soon people from all over the city run to the park with their respective musical instruments in tow.

Kia says the commercial represents 30 different musical instruments from more than 20 cultures and includes African and Korean drums, a sitar, a ukulele, bagpipes, violins, and more.

The hamsters have always been plugged-in to what is going on in the world around us, and in the ‘The World Needs More Soul’ campaign they are back to share their infectious spirit of optimism and celebrate things that bring people together like music and dance,” said Michael Sprague, chief operating officer of Kia Motors America, in a release. “With each Soul execution we strive to bring a fresh musical perspective, and ‘Soul Jam’ blends a variety of styles and cultures with a highly recognizable piece of music to create something fun and different that stands out from the crowd, just like the Soul.”

We’re just glad the creepy sexy human-like hamsters from 2014 are gone.

The automaker has already posted a nearly two-minute extended cut video to its YouTube page. Check out the extended cut “Soul Jam” ad for the 2016 Kia Soul ahead of its regular movie theater debut below.

The best thing about the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS is its LT1 V-8, a torquey, snarling beast that unleashes a wave of torque from idle right up to its redline. Yet this all-new Camaro is more than just a straight-line bruiser. Lighter and smaller than its predecessor, it can turn and stop with aplomb, too. It’s a world-class sports car that just happens to look like a traditional muscle car.

Maybe SS means “slalom special”

When we find curvy roads, we realize that a killer engine is only part of the Camaro’s appeal. Built atop the same Alpha platform used for Cadillac’s ATS, the Camaro feels more scalpel than sledgehammer. Sharp electric power steering builds up weight predictably and naturally, allowing us to dial in exactly the right amount of steering for every bend. The three-spoke wheel feels great in our fingertips, and the quick steering rack makes the car seem smaller and more agile than you’d expect, given its sizable footprint.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M side profile

This huge improvement compared to the last Camaro is in large part due to its new suspension, which manages to not only mitigate punishment from potholes, but also curb body pitch and roll even when you throw it like a four-seam fastball into a corner. Neither mid-corner bumps nor last-minute changes in throttle application upset the Camaro, while wide, grippy summer tires on 20-inch wheels let you build heroic g-forces (which you can observe using the real-time digital gauge in the instrument cluster). It’s been a long time since the Camaro was a true straight-line-only bruiser, but this 2016 SS is one of the sharpest examples yet.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M front end 02 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M gear shifter 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M wheel 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M engine

That engine, though, is the ’Maro’s real star. It snarls and crackles without consideration for neighbors, especially with the active exhaust set to Track mode, although you can adjust the exhaust valves to a much-tamer Stealth mode. The engine joyously builds torque as soon as you dip into the throttle. Compared to the Mustang GT’s slightly breathy 5.0-liter V-8, which needs a few revs to really wake up, the Camaro feels stronger and more urgent off the line. It’s easy to launch hard without any effort, the car’s traction control and limited-slip differential mitigating wheelspin without halting forward progress. Both the six-speed manual and the clutch are a little rubbery and springy, so you can’t rush upshifts with quite the aggression some muscle cars allow, but never once did we miss a gate or mistime a shift.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M cabin 01

Ergonomics and packaging are still a letdown

If only such a wonderful sports car weren’t wrapped up inside the Camaro’s form-over-function bodywork. You still can’t see out of this car very well, for instance, because the beltline and cowl are far too high compared to the on-the-floor seating position. Giant twist-to-adjust climate vents seem like a great styling touch, but the center ones blow air only at occupants’ knees. Though its functionality is flawless (especially when using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), it’s really perturbing that the touchscreen is angled down, away from the driver’s view, to prevent glare. And out back, a tiny trunk aperture makes it near impossible to, say, load a bicycle even with the back seats folded, a feat we managed without issue in our Four Seasons Ford Mustang.

2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS 6M rear three quarter 04

Still, all those concerns fade away each time we get behind the wheel of the Camaro and open the taps. The lighter, lither 2016 Camaro is a bona-fide sports car that had us taking the long way home just to find another set of corners. From its devastatingly powerful engine to its communicative steering to its remarkably nimble handling, there’s nothing to fault with the way the sixth-gen Camaro SS drives.

Sports cars always force some compromises on their owners, but even considerable ergonomic gripes do little to diminish our love for driving the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS. That’s how good it is. Whether we’re ripping off killer 0-60-mph runs, diving into corners, or careening our way through our favorite back roads, the Camaro is without question an engaging, rewarding co-pilot.

After many rumors of Kia making a production version of its GT concept car, spy photographers have finally caught a prototype for the production GT undergoing testing. Immediately you’ll notice that it isn’t fully covered and some exterior design details are clearly visible including the car’s dramatic, coupe-like roofline.

When viewed from the side, the prototype looks similar to an Audi A7, meaning it could be a have a large hatchback instead of a tradition trunk. Out back, the first detail you’ll notice are the quad exhaust tips, which suggest that the GT could be packing a version of Hyundai-Kia’s new 3.3-liter twin-turbo V-6, which is rated at 365 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque in the Genesis G90. The rear lighting treatment is clearly reminiscent of the GT concept’s taillights, which run the width of the car. Up front, despite the camouflage, the headlights feature the same curved triangular look as the concept, which should give it a more distinctive and aggressive face. However, the car’s tiger nose grille is still covered heavily, so it’s not clear whether Kia’s trademark front end will carry over to its sport sedan.

The lower part of the car’s front fascia also appears to have large lower air intakes, which could indicate that it is powered by a high-output engine with forced induction. Like the GT Concept, expect the production version to come standard with rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive likely to be an option. Since the GT will be positioned as a premium product, expect Kia’s full suite of active safety features and semi-autonomous driving tech from Kia’s Drive Wise sub-brand to be available. The Kia GT should slot in between the Cadenza and full-size K900 in terms of size. Compared to its current premium offerings, the GT should be the more performance-oriented offering.

Kia has unveiled the 2017 Sorento, which has received minor changes including the integration of Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. Two new options, the Advance Touring and Advance technology packages, are now available in lower trim levels and add additional active safety features such as dynamic bending lights, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, advanced smart cruise control, and autonomous emergency braking. The range-topping SXL trim comes standard with all those active safety features.

The base L and LX trims will continue to come standard with a 2.4-liter inline-four making 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque while the EX model is equipped with a more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 240 hp and 260 lb-ft. A 3.3-liter V-6 with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft is standard on the SX and SXL grades and optional on the LX and EX trims. A six-speed automatic remains the only transmission available on all trim levels. Seven-passenger seating remains standard on all V-6 equipped Sorentos and optional on the LX trim equipped with the 2.4-liter I-4.
