Jaguar Land Rover will introduce Spotify music streaming to its vehicles starting this month.

The service will be available on all Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles equipped with InControl Apps. Starting September 27, drivers can download Spotify from the Apple App Store, and once their phone is plugged into the car, the music streaming app will automatically show up on the vehicle’s touchscreen. Users don’t need a paid Spotify subscription for this feature to work.

JLR says it spent a year collaborating with Spotify to make the user experience just right. The feature allows drivers to scroll through menus and access personalized “Just for You” playlists. When traveling through low-signal areas, users can take advantage of the Spotify “Offline Mode” that will play previously downloaded music.

“The Spotify design team worked closely with us to create the best in-vehicle experience, and have spent many hours with us at our Gaydon HQ running user studies with our employees.” said Peter Virk, director of Connected Technologies and Apps for JLR, in a statement. “We will continue to work with Spotify to add new features such as predictive search over the coming months.”

JLR isn’t the only automaker to pair up with Spotify. Volvo said it will add Spotify integration to its entire global lineup, while Ford has also integrated the feature into its Sync App Link system.

While most classic car owners keep their priceless collection locked up safe, some actually risk harming their irreplaceable vehicles on the race track. A new video shows a Jaguar E-Type coupe nearly take out a Ferrari 250 GTO during a Goodwood Road & Racing (GRRC) event at the recent Goodwood Revival.

While trying to pass the Ferrari on the inside of a right-hand turn, the Jaguar oversteered causing the rear to come around and nearly smash into the back of the multi-million-dollar prancing horse. The Jaguar did a complete 180 and went to the outside of the track over the narrow strip of grass onto the pit lane.

While no value was given to the E-Type, the 250 GTO is valued at £30 million or approximately $39.7 million. Fortunately, both vehicles were unscathed with likely only one ego bruised and a couple pairs of trousers a bit soiled.

BIRMINGHAM, England—There was really no new information announced Thursday at the Jaguar Collections Center, as many of the details regarding Jaguar’s entry into Formula E, beginning with the Hong Kong season-opener in a month, have already leaked out.

But for Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E and its most tireless advocate during the past two undeniably challenging years, the formal presentation of the car, the three drivers and a major team partner, Panasonic, must have seemed like a confirmation of the series’ future.

After all, Agag said, “Jaguar is the first premium manufacturer to join the series, and we know more are coming.”

Indeed there are, including Audi—which already appears in name with Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport—and very likely BMW.

Panasonic Jaguar Racing Formula E I Type Right Side 2

The Jaguar driver lineup is low on star power, but it’s certainly a qualified trio: Adam Carroll, 33; Mitch Evans, 22 and the youngest driver in the field; and reserve driver Ho-Pin Tung, 33, who may be the best-known to U.S. audiences, having driven sports cars and Indy cars.

Carroll, from Northern Ireland, has had a career that includes karting, F3, GP2, A1GP, IndyCar and WEC. He has been the main test driver for the Jaguar. Which will be known, by the way, as the I-TYPE 1.

Evans, from New Zealand, is considered an up-and-comer with karting and open-wheel championship titles, including the 2012 GP3 Championship. He has competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing second in-class in 2015. In 2016, he competed in the GP2 Series for Campos Racing.

Ho-Pin Tung, from China, has experience in F3, A1GP, GP2, WEC, IMSA, IndyCar, and F1 testing, and he attempted to qualify for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 but crashed. Tung also is the only one of the three with Formula E experience, having competed in three races in the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship season.

The team would not confirm what Panasonic’s role will be, but the company’s knowledge of electronics will certainly come into play in future seasons, as the series transitions to a single car per race (battery drain requires two cars per team, per race, now). Batteries are spec items supplied by Formula E, and the McLaren motors are governed. Differences in teams largely amount to chassis setup, tire management, power management, and driver ability.

The 2016-2017 schedule has only one race in the U.S. at present, as the series will not return to Long Beach, California, due to an inability to make the financial numbers work for Long Beach promoters. Miami, on the first year’s schedule, remains without a race.

The series will end the season in New York City July 29-30, and the Jaguar team hopes at least one more U.S. date will fill one of the two “TBD” slots on the calendar in April and June, possibly a race in or near San Francisco. There will be at least five new venues, including Marrakech, Morocco and Brussels, Belgium.

One thing Jaguar knows: It won’t be easy. Carroll and Evans were near the bottom of the time chart at the recent test at Donington Park in the U.K., but the team insists they were going for total track time, not top speed.

James Barclay, Panasonic Jaguar Racing team director, said, “Everyone has worked very hard over the last nine months to prepare for our debut. We want to be successful on and off the track. We know that the challenge will be strong—our competitors have a two-year head start. We will be keeping our expectations in check in our first season.”

One the most significant vehicle up for grabs during the 2016 Monterey Car Week is this 1955 Jaguar D-Type, a bonafide Le Mans winner. This gorgeous roadster took the overall podium in 1956, claiming the British automaker’s fourth overall win just one year after the remarkably tragic 1955 Le Mans.

This ’55 D-Type led the charge for the Scottish Ecurie Ecosse racing team, wearing the team’s fabulous Flag Blue Metallic paint. Teams participating in the 1956 Le Mans competition were given strict fuel rations, and cars with larger engines suffered. While the big Aston Martins consistently ran into fuel consumption issues, the ferocious speed of the Jaguar D-Types made up for fuel conservation efforts. Apparently, while the other big-bore cars were driving at maximum attack to keep up, the Jags ran the course “with 1,000 rpm in hand.” The race was claimed easily by chassis XKD 501 presented here.

Unfortunately, following victory at La Sarthe, XKD 501 fell into a slump. No significant motorsports victories followed, and the car changed hands a few times, before landing in the collection of a Scotsman in 1970. It flourished under his care, with multiple rebuilds, refreshes, and “sympathetic” restorations. Eventually, XKD 501 moved on to a preeminent collection in the U.S., where it remained until now.

How much? To date, the most expensive British car sold at public auction was a sumptuous 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, claiming $14.3 million last year. This ousted a 1953 Jaguar C-Type Works Lightweight, which sold earlier that year for $13.2 million. The aforementioned C-Type is a significant and historically important car to be sure, but carries nowhere near the pedigree of a certified Le Mans winner, let alone one that finished so handily at the hands of a revered race team. Look for a hammerfall somewhere well north of $20 million.

If you have the means, you can grab the keys to nearly every desirable vintage ride imaginable, ranging from wood-wheeled runabouts from the early 1900s, all the way up to the newest carbon fiber hypercar. In other countries (and continents), the pickings can be far slimmer. In the newest episode of Petrolicious, a passionate Jaguar E-Type owner in Peru discusses the hardships of finding and owning a classic in South America.

An architect by trade, Miguel Rodrigo knows good design. The Peruvian aficionado cherishes his 1964 Jaguar E-Type Roadster, calling its curvaceous appearance something that everyone finds beautiful. “I’m an architect, and I’m very design-oriented. I think it’s a classic that everybody likes; you don’t need to be a car aficionado to like this car,” says Rodrigo. He might have his classic, but it isn’t always easy to find interesting cars in Peru.

According to Rodrigo, in the 1960s, the South American country “had cars from all over the world.” When a dictatorship seized power, the influx of foreign cars was nearly severed. In order to import an E-Type, Rodrigo petitioned and worked to change portions of the importation law, and eventually, won the right to bring classics into the country.

Don’t assume Rodrigo locks his E-Type away in the recesses of a dark garage. The architect was a co-founder and winner of a Peruvian iteration of the famed Cannonball Run held in the U.S., a race that bounced from border to border of Peru.

During the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., stunt driver Terry Grant and the Jaguar F-Pace joined forces once again to make a dramatic entrance. The F-Pace made its Goodwood debut on two wheels, with professional freestyle motorcycle stunt rider Lee Bowers along for the ride.

Last year, the Jaguar F-Pace set the record for the world’s biggest loop-the-loop with Grant behind the wheel. The F-Pace completed the nearly 30-foot loop in just 3 seconds, going upside down with no issue. This year, Jaguar’s performance crossover takes on the Goodwood hill on two wheels. During the drive up the demanding course, Bowers climbed out the passenger window, stood on the side of the F-Pace, and waved to the cheering crowd before climbing back inside to cross the finish line.

“When Jaguar gave me the opportunity to reunite with the F-Pace used to break the world’s largest loop record, I couldn’t say no. It’s light, stiff aluminum body and precise controls make it the perfect wheelie vehicle, and it was great to have Lee Bowers along for company-even if he did climb out halfway through our run,” said Grant in a release.

To prepare for the event, Grant headed to Santa Pod Raceway in Northamptonshire days before the official event to get in enough planning and practice to navigate the performance crossover on two wheels.

If you’ve been planning a visit to Germany’s Nürburgring, you may want to rethink your ‘Ring taxi rental plans. Thrill-seeking tourists will be able to experience one of the most challenging road courses in the world, the ‘Ring’s infamous Nordschleife, riding shotgun in a Jaguar F-Type SVR.

The newly launched Jaguar Co-Pilot Nordschleife program lets customers take a lap in the passenger seat of a new F-Type SVR coupe for 295 euros ($334 at today’s exchange rates). That price gets you a racing suit, helmet, HANS device, and a seat in the 575-hp version of Jaguar’s two-seat sports car. Onboard cameras are also provided to capture all the track’s sights and sounds, including the roar of the SVR’s supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. Each Co-Pilot Nordschleife car is fitted with a roll cage, Recaro racing seats, and racing harnesses in addition to the SVO-tuned suspension and all-wheel drive that come standard on all SVR models. “The weather at the Nürburgring is famed for being unpredictable and the new Jaguar F-Type SVR is the perfect car to tackle the undulating track in variable conditions,” said SVO director Mark Stanton, in a release. “The Nordschleife is a fantastic circuit on which to experience all of the engineering enhancements my team has applied to the F-TYPE SVR.”

LLEIDA, Spain—I was in Los Angeles not long ago when I received a call from AUTOMOBILE’s executive editor, Mac Morrison, asking if I was available for lunch with him and editor-in-chief Mike Floyd. Less than 24 hours later, as I chewed my burger, they asked a question I did not expect: Would I like to do some road-test work for AUTOMOBILE? Of course, I had already done some track driving and added some “color commentary” for the 2016 All-Stars issue, so I nodded enthusiastically. And wordlessly at first, as I quickly realized spraying them both with food might change their minds.

Thankfully, my 2016 driver contract with Black Swan Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportCar Championship does not preclude me from taking advantage of such a great opportunity. So here I am a few weeks later, sitting in a Jaguar XE sedan, headed to the Spanish town of Lleida. The scenery around the city is arid and rugged with its own distinct beauty; think southern New Mexico and Arizona, with the dry temperature hovering at about 90 degrees.

I’m here to get a first impression of the new Jaguar F-Type SVR. I recently drove the F-Type R AWD for a day and have looked forward to trying the new SVR.

I’ve been a fan of the Jaguar F-Type, in terms of its looks, since its inception in 2013, and I’m especially a fan of the coupe that came along a bit later. Jaguar did a particularly good job with the car’s rear end, which is notable because it seems to me that many cars these days look good from any angle apart from the rear.

The SVR’s exterior changes are subtle but functional. New hood vents and modifications to the front undertray and front valance provide better engine cooling. Wider front wheel-arch bodywork with new air-exit vents, a new rear venturi/diffuser, and split exhaust silencers all help to provide better airflow and reduce lift. The new-for-SVR rear wing activates automatically at 70 mph on the coupe (60 mph for convertible) and reduces lift. In Dynamic (sport) mode, the wing is always deployed.

As far as weight reductions, new twin silencers on the SVR save 36 pounds, while wider, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels cut another 29 pounds. The carbon-package option, which includes brakes and a carbon roof, takes off 55 pounds. In total, an SVR coupe with all of the lighter options fitted comes in at 3,750 pounds (3,784 for the convertible), 120 pounds lighter than the F-Type R AWD.

Power is up from 550 hp to 575, with 516 lb-ft of torque in both coupe and convertible. This is a very quick car, with a 200-mph top speed for the coupe (195 mph for the convertible). All-wheel drive allows easier—read: safer for most drivers—access to all the power. Jaguar quotes a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, which might be a tad conservative. The official number is a substantial 0.4-second improvement over the R.

Our first taste of the SVR began at 8 a.m. with a 110-mile drive in the convertible to end at the MotorLand Aragon racetrack facility. I have many years doing chassis/suspension-, tire-, and shock-development work on both production and race cars for many manufacturers. The upshot is, this has given me a keen interest and understanding of vehicle dynamics, both aerodynamic and mechanical. In that context, one point stayed with me from my recent drive in an F-Type R AWD: It was quite reactive and jarring when encountering pavement changes and expansion joints in regular street driving. It felt to me like this might be caused by the car’s high-speed shock travel not quite matching the wheel rate rather than anything else, but either way, the jarring was too abrupt for my tastes—especially in a Jaguar. I am happy to note the SVR has new shock valving; the car’s handling now feels predictable, at least on all the road surfaces I encountered, and noticeably less harsh.

Just like the F-Type R, the SVR’s exhaust gets plenty loud if you hit the sound-enhance button, with a maniacal bellowing to go along with the pops and crackles on the overrun. This is all familiar to anyone who has driven or ridden in an F-Type R, or even heard one pass by, but it certainly makes me smile again. I suspect some of the innocent woodland creatures we pass are probably left somewhat deaf.

New options for a suede-cloth-covered center console and instrument cluster look and feel good. I’m not sure if it’s the suede cloth or not, but the SVR smells great inside. The steering wheel is unique to this model, and the new Lozenge Quilt pattern, 14-way adjustable seats were comfortable on the two-hour run to the track. One negative is that they do not hold me in as much as I need when driving hard. I’m a Sagittarius, 5-foot-10, 156 pounds, and kind to animals, in case you wonder.

The MotorLand track is a modern, first-class race facility. It’s always fun to drive just about anything on a closed circuit, but it is worth noting that Jaguar says maybe only 5 to 10 percent of SVRs will ever see a racetrack. I rip around for two sessions of three hot laps each. Top speeds exceed 170 mph on the really long back straight that ends in a 45-mph corner. There is some brake fade by the third lap, but I counter it easily with a little more pedal pressure. The SVRs I’m driving all have the optional 15.6-inch front and 14.9-inch rear carbon brakes.

The SVR has a good amount of grip, but as with most street cars and especially ones with all-wheel drive, it does understeer at its limit, in all driving modes. I initially drive a fast, smooth line around the track, kind of like a normal, sane person might. But in order to go quicker, I have to bypass the front-end push because it’s never faster to drive through understeer. I have to rotate the car and induce oversteer at turn-in and then carry this mild drift/slide all the way through the corner. Accomplishing this can take aggressive driving techniques; with many cars today, it’s just not possible. The good news is, I am able to manipulate the SVR and lap faster. This tells me all the parts—differentials, shocks, springs, anti-roll bars, traction and stability control, etc.—are working in harmony. The SVR is sliding under control, fast, and is loads of fun. I find the regular steering mode is fine for normal driving, allowing a slower vehicle reaction to steering input. Dynamic mode has quicker steering, which I prefer for spirited/track driving.

The afternoon drive home provides us with virtually deserted, twisty mountain roads. I take advantage of this to see how the SVR handles some spirited performance driving in a real-world situation away from the racetrack. In these conditions there is no brake fade, despite purposely my using left foot to brake, which always creates more heat.

Jaguar requested we not disable all the handling nannies while on the track, which I respected, and I kept them on for the street, knowing most actual F-Type drivers will as well. The Track mode for the DSC was the most fun and had little intrusion, even when the car was quite sideways. Knowing the limits from the brief track drive gave me the confidence to safely work the SVR very hard. And if a car has the ability to go this quick, it had better be able to stop like it opened a parachute and give its driver the ability/insurance to change his mind late in a turn. The SVR has this covered.

At the end of the day, I stood next to the SVR after my one-hour twisty rip fest and just looked at it. I started to feel a bit guilty as it pinged itself cooler. Had I been a bit unkind to such a beautiful car? I swear it winked at me, as if to say, “Let’s go back and do it again.”

As a first impression, this was a good one. The 2017 Jaguar F-Type SVR should appeal to anyone looking at a base Audi R8, Porsche 911 Turbo, and several offerings from Mercedes-AMG. It should hang with, say, a Corvette Z51 on the track and be much quicker on the road. A Corvette Z06, especially with the Z07 package, will be quicker on the track, but the F-Type is a more refined piece, reflected in its significantly higher price-point than the Chevys. Jaguar owners aspiring to this car will not be disappointed. And the SVR’s performance and starting price of $126,945 for the coupe and $129,795 for the convertible may well attract more than a few new performance-car buyers to the marque—the type of folks looking for an experience that is a bit different than a chauffeured ride to a Spanish hotel retreat.

You can try to deny it, but there’s no way you won’t feel that tingle on your neck when you get to say, “I’ll pick you up in my Jaguar.” For the week I had the 2016 Jaguar XF S, I said “Jaguar” plenty. After a while I even got really snooty and started saying “Jag-U-Are,” like a proper Brit would. Another week with this car and I’d probably have started carrying an umbrella around L.A.

Designer Ian Callum’s rakish sedan, introduced for 2008, has been updated for 2016—and all for the better. Now it’s even bolder (bigger ducts up front), meaner, leaner. My tester was painted Storm Grey with gloss-black “Venom” 20-inch wheels, a panther seemingly poised to pounce on anything in its way. I’d barely been behind the wheel for 20 minutes when an Accord full of teens pulled alongside at the light and motioned for me to drop my passenger window. “Dude,” said the driver. “Been following you a while. Niiiiice car.” Then he gave me a thumbs-up, a nod, and rolled away. In that respect this Jag has it all over its German competition (BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class). It’s simply rarer and way, way sexier, combined with an aristocratic air that makes you think, “Wow. Beauty and brains.”

2016 Jaguar XF S rear three quarter

Admittedly, the Germans still bring optional V-8 muscle to the gladitorium, whereas this top-model XF offers only a 3.0-liter V-6. That said, it’s supercharged to 380 horsepower, and though it does lack the massive initial torque of the big V-8s, once the revs are up it pulls this 3,800-pound four-door plenty hard. The paddle-shift auto is a nice eight-speed unit that cracks off damn-quick shifts—especially with the JaguarDrive console selector set in Dynamic mode (which also quickens steering and throttle response). All in all, unless you’re racing for money, you likely won’t miss the two extra cylinders.

This is a stiff car, clearly tuned for responsiveness over ride comfort. If you’re an enthusiast, that’s a good thing, but a few passengers commented that the XF S felt “pretty bumpy.” On the plus side, the structure now benefits from lots of strong, lightweight aluminum, so the firm ride doesn’t mean vibrations or squeaks. I enjoyed the crispness of the chassis and didn’t feel like it beat me up. And the payoff: some of the best handling moves in the class; the XF S was brilliant in the Malibu twisties (though the electronic power steering lacks the superb feel found in some other Jaguar models—at times it’s a bit numb). Bottom line: If you’re considering an XF, you’ll want to take a test drive to make sure the aggressive S model is for you. If the roads are lousy where you live, think about it even harder.

Certainly the XF S qualifies as a “luxury” sedan, and it’s not short on amenities (mine included optional cooled front seats, heated rears, an electric rear sunblind, four-zone climate control, and lots more). But it’s the “sport” in its character that really shines through. This isn’t a warm, woody, clubby cabin. It’s more businesslike, darker; modernity takes precedence over classic luxury touches. Yes, you’ll find everything from rich leather seats to a power moonroof and touchscreen navigation (the previous tortoise-slow unit has been replaced by a far zippier 10.2-inch screen). But the XF S still feels more edgy than cushy. Again, it’s not a taste for everyone. But, for sure, it’s distinctive.

When I say the XF S is “modern,” I mean it. You could browse through an auto supplier’s gadgets lab and come up with fewer examples of cutting-edge tech. My test car brimmed with a head-up display, adaptive cruise control that can automatically creep along by in stop-and-go traffic, forward collision warning with automatic braking, park assist (which can help stow the car in both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces), and a traffic-sign recognition system that can actually read the prevailing speed limit and keep the car precisely there. It works. Too well. I turned it off.

Despite its lofty $63,695 base price, the new XF S is actually cheaper than the outgoing model. That makes it a particularly tempting option in this segment. And you’ll get to say “Jaguar” all you want.

Our spy photographers have caught what looks like a Jaguar F-Type packing a four-cylinder engine under the hood. The prototype was caught near the Nürburgring race track in Germany where prototypes of the facelifted model are undergoing testing.

The biggest giveaway that this F-Type mule has a different engine is the large single center-mounted exhaust. Our spy team also said the car emits a very different sound than its large-engined brethren.

Additionally, the car doesn’t have a retractable spoiler, and the rear bumper appears to be different from the more powerful F-Type variants. The prototype’s alloy wheels look to be of a smaller diameter. The front bumper also looks like it’s different from the V-6 and V-8-powered F-Types, which have more aggressive lower front fascias with larger air intakes.

Currently, it isn’t known if Jaguar will use the same Ford-sourced 2.0-liter turbo-four as in the XE, which is rated at 237 hp and 251 lb-ft of torque. However, it’s likely that the four-cylinder used in the F-Type will have a power output closer to the base 718 Boxster and Cayman, which make 300 hp and 280 lb-ft. The four-cylinder F-Type will likely offer a choice of manual and automatic transmissions.
