GM announced specs for the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado last week, and now the automaker has details on its sister truck, the 2017 GMC Canyon. Not surprisingly, the GMC version gets many of the same mechanical updates as the Colorado, including a revised 3.6-liter V-6 and new eight-speed automatic transmission, but the Canyon also receives a new All Terrain X trim level.

Like the Colorado, the 2017 Canyon’s optional 3.6-liter V-6 gains variable valve timing, revised direct injection, and cylinder deactivation for gains of 3 hp an 6 lb-ft of torque, bringing output to 308 hp and 275 lb-ft. Meanwhile, GM’s ubiquitous Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic replaces the previous six-speed. The V-6 and eight-speed combo is rated at 7,000 pounds max trailering capacity, which is second in class only to the available 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel’s tow rating of 7,700 pounds.2017 GMC Canyon Denali front three quarter

Also new is an All Terrain X model, which builds on the popular All Terrain package offered on the Canyon SLE. GM says the 2017 Canyon All Terrain X will be the most off-road-capable model in the lineup, with its Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 255/65R17 all-terrain tires. In addition, the All Terrain X receives an off-road suspension, transfer case shield, Hill Descent Control feature, spray-on bedliner, 3-inch step bars, all-weather floor liners, a body-color grille, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels.

The 2017 GMC Canyon Denali, revealed late last year, will be the more premium offering in the Canyon lineup with its exclusive interior trim, unique chrome grille, tubular running boards, spray-on bedliner, and unique 20-inch black-accented alloy wheels. Among the Denali’s upscale interior appointments are a heated steering wheel, GM’s IntelliLink infotainment system with navigation, a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, Bose seven-speaker premium audio system, and two USB ports for the rear seats. The Denali model also comes standard with Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning.

The 2017 GMC Canyon arrives on dealer lots in the fourth quarter of this year.

GMC has unveiled the 2016 Yukon SLT Premium Edition, which boasts plenty of chrome accents and upscale interior features. The model will go on sale this summer and will be available as the standard Yukon or as the long-wheelbase Yukon XL.

Unique design touches on the 2016 GMC Yukon SLT Premium Edition include 22-inch chrome wheels, bright chrome body-side moldings, a polished exhaust tip, and a chrome grille. Also look for fold-flat second- and third-row seats, a programmable power liftgate, wireless phone charging, GMC’s IntelliLink multimedia interface with an 8-inch touchscreen and navigation, Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto compatibility, and keyless entry/start. With rear-wheel drive, towing capacity reaches 8,500 pounds for Yukon models or 8,300 pounds for XL variants.

“The new Yukon SLT Premium Edition adds distinction and personalized style to the already well-appointed Yukon SLT model,” said Stu Pierce, senior marketing manager for GMC Trucks & Full-size SUVs. “For discerning customers seeking uncompromising capability and unparalleled refinement in a full-size SUV, Yukon SLT Premium Edition delivers with the latest in technologies, amenities and a unique and premium style.”

Under the hood is a 5.3-liter V-8 rated at 355 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy ratings are 16/23 mpg city/highway for rear-drive models and 15/22 mpg with four-wheel drive.

WASHINGTON, D.C. Seven hundred pounds. That was the captivating figure at the 2016 Detroit auto show when the cover came off the redesigned 2017 GMC Acadia. A buyer would need to equip the new Acadia correctly to indeed see such a drastic weight reduction, but the Acadia doesn’t just drop a waist size for 2017. The Acadia makes a paradigm shift from the archetypal full-size, three-row mommy machine—on the market for the past nine years—to a fresh offering in the growing midsize SUV segment, thanks mostly to smaller dimensions. After a stint in the new SUV through gorgeous Virginia backcountry, we discovered the segment-swapping 2017 GMC Acadia might fill a very necessary void in GM’s expansive lineup.

Both on paper and in the flesh, the Acadia’s redesign is dramatic. Visually, the 2017 model cuts a much smoother and cleaner profile than the tall and bulky first-gen. That’s not all because of styling either: The Acadia slashes 7.2 inches in overall length and 3.9 inches in height. GMC is keeping detailed specifics on the miracle 700-pound diet close to the vest, but we did learn it’s owed largely to the Acadia’s smaller footprint, shrunken structure, and interior changes.

Unsurprisingly, this weight and size deficit pays massive dividends when it comes to on-road driving. The Acadia hustles more like a car-based crossover than the cumbersome and rather truckish first-gen model, and it steers, stops, and accelerates with less recalcitrance. Ride quality, body control, and overall refinement also are improved, but for maximum comfort, buyers can hop up to the range-topping Denali and its trim-exclusive adaptive suspension. Drivers can fiddle with drive mode including Comfort, Sport, and off-road settings. With the adaptive suspension, the Acadia feels much nimbler and confident on tight roads, lessening our anxiety navigating blind corners on our route through some claustrophobic Virginia villages.

Motivation comes from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 194 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque or a 3.6-liter V-6 with 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. GM’s old six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels, and all-wheel drive is available as well. Not much has changed with the powertrain’s character when compared to the older versions of the Acadia, though the start/stop technology integrated into the 2.5-liter engine is a new trick. We only spent time with the Denali and All-Terrain models, both equipped with the 3.6-liter engine, so we’ll have to wait on a verdict for the four-cylinder mill. The V-6 delivers linear power as before, with little delay between throttle inputs and engine response. The six-speed automatic provides slightly rougher downshifts than we would like, but GM’s fancy new eight-speed gearbox from the Cadillac XT5 might soon be an upgrade.

2017 GMC Acadia steering wheel and dashboard

With the powertrain revisions, fuel economy improves vastly over the outgoing SUV. The V-6 was the only powertrain available for the older Acadia, which got 15/22 mpg city/highway in both FWD and AWD guises. The new 2.5-liter front-wheel-drive Acadia raises efficiency to 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Hop up to the all-wheel-drive four-cylinder Acadia, and the city rating stays the same as the front-wheel-drive variant but takes just a 1-mpg hit on the highway. The new 3.6-liter is more efficient as well, with both the front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive SUV putting down 18/25 mpg.

The new Acadia packs a highly updated interior, including the handsome GM switchgear we have become accustomed to on recently refreshed models such as the Chevrolet Colorado, Volt, and Malibu. In the Denali and All-Terrain Acadia models, the cockpit is well equipped with all of the niceties you’d want considering the price, including heated and cooled seats with a heated middle row, digital gauge cluster, and a full-leather treatment on some models. On the lower trim levels, the plastics and materials aren’t quite up to snuff, but the overall package is still miles ahead of the ancient Lambda-platform SUVs.

2017 GMC Acadia side profile 04

Passenger space and cargo volume have indeed shrunk, but GMC isn’t worried about losing buyers. The automaker says drivers of the outgoing Acadia used the third row only occasionally. Where the outgoing SUV was sold in mandatory seven- or eight-seat configuration, the 2017 Acadia is available in just five-seat form when equipped with the new All-Terrain package, putting an emphasis on usable space and cargo rather than on hauling the kiddos. When included, third-row space is predictably uncomfortable for full-sized adults, but it would work in a pinch for a quick jaunt out to lunch.

The aforementioned All-Terrain package also adds a little visual flair, but the real benefit is an upgraded all-wheel-drive system for additional capability when the way becomes treacherous. In the All-Terrain, the system is the latest twin-clutch Twinster unit found on both the Cadillac XT5 and the 2017 Buick LaCrosse. The All-Terrain adds a trim-specific drive mode with the same name, which incorporates the ever-useful hill descent control. We piloted the All-Terrain Acadia for a short burst down a ranch-style two-track path, and the crossover never faltered over the rutted muddy ground. Ground clearance and a lack of capable tires might prevent the All-Terrain from storming the Dakar Rally, among other things, but it still packs more than enough capability to keep things nice and tidy when the path turns muddy or icy.

Now that the base front-wheel-drive Acadia drops both in size and price by $1,905, the lines between it and the midsize GMC Terrain are blurred. The Terrain is still a bit smaller, undercutting the Acadia in length by 8.3 inches, in height by 2.4 inches, and interior cargo volume by around 15 cubic feet, but look for a sizable chunk of Terrain buyers to migrate over to the redesigned Acadia for its better utility. GM plans on keeping the Acadia sized as is for the foreseeable future, and credible rumors strongly pin the next generation of Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave on an extended-wheelbase incarnation of the 2017 Acadia’s Chi platform. If you can’t stomach the size change, and still want the older Lambda-based SUV, GM will still offer the outgoing model through at least 2017 under the Acadia Limited nameplate.

The new Acadia is a much-needed and smartly executed redesign of an almost 10-year-old SUV. It may move downmarket into a smaller slot, which would only position the Acadia to better bridge the gap between the slightly smaller Terrain and the larger GMC Yukon.

It wouldn’t truly be an autoshow without General Motors rolling out a slew of special editions that feature only minor visual changes. To meet this quota, GMC pulled the covers off a new Terrain package ahead of its official debut at the 2016 New York auto show.

As we have seen previously with the Chevrolet Colorado, Silverado, Trax, and Impala, the GMC Terrain gains a new blacked-out Nightfall Edition visual package that darkens nearly the whole exterior of the SUV.

To create this package, GMC adds new 18-inch aluminum wheels painted gloss black, bespoke to the Nightfall Edition. A new black grille and grille surround pair with blackened front and rear fascia accents. The rear license plate frame is darkened, along with gloss black outside mirrors and luggage rails.

Surprisingly, this Midnight Edition is available in other colors other than black, including Summit White, Graphite Gray Metallic, and Crimson Red Metallic. The package is offered on the Terrain SLE-2 and SLT models.

Underneath this new package, the Terrain is unchanged, with a choice of two engines. Power comes from either the 2.4-liter four cylinder, pushing out 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque, or the big-boy 3.6-liter V-6, with 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque.

The 2017 GMC Terrain Nightfall Edition debuts alongside the 2017 Buick Enclave Sport Touring Edition at the 2016 New York auto show.

Despite being around for almost a decade, the current-generation GMC Acadia will remain on sale as the Acadia Limited alongside the new 2017 Acadia, which goes on sale this spring. A report from Automotive News states that both models will be available for sale for a limited time, which was confirmed by General Motors spokesman Brian Goebel. However, no timetable was given regarding when the older car will eventually go out of production.

The 2017 Acadia will be built in GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee plant while the old model is manufactured in Lansing, Michigan alongside its platform mates, the Buick Encore and Chevrolet Traverse. GM’s decision to keep producing the old Acadia was to ensure that the Lansing plant kept a full production schedule since the next-generation Traverse and Enclave aren’t expected to go on sale until 2017 and will be built on a long wheelbase version of the 2017 Acadia’s platform.

Compared to the old model, the 2017 GMC Acadia is shorter by 7.2 inches in length, 3.5 inches narrower, and 3.9 inches lower in height. The new crossover is also 700 pounds lighter and is available with seating for up to seven passengers. Two engines will be available, a 2.5-liter I-4 with 194 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque, and a new 3.6-liter V-6 rated at 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox available and the crossover can be had in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations.

The post 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra Add eAssist Hybrid appeared first on Automobile Magazine.

]]>
The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 now have a hybrid option, thanks to the addition of an eAssist version that supplements the truck’s 355-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 engine with an electric motor. General Motors says the trucks, available only with rear-wheel drive, will return 18/24/20 mpg (city/highway/combined), up from 16/22/20 mpg for the regular 1500 5.3-liter models with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The eAssist system is a mild hybrid that can boost the gasoline engine but not drive the vehicle on its own. An electric motor is connected to the engine’s accessory drive belts, providing up to 13 hp and 44 lb-ft of boost, and able to generate up to 15 kW of electricity during regenerative braking. That energy is stored in a 0.45-kWh lithium-ion battery pack mounted beneath the truck’s center console. The company says this adds only about 100 lb of weight overall. The engines have stop-start functionality and can still tow 9,400 lb.

This is, however, just a test case for the moment. The 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 eAssist will be offered only on the Crew Cab SLT model with the Premium Plus package, and only 200 trucks will be sold, all of them in California. The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 eAssist will be limited the Crew Cab 1LT, and just 500 models will be sold in California. Both brands promise to “monitor the market carefully” and, if the trucks are popular, may increase availability of the hybrids for the 2017 model year.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 eAssist front

GM has used the eAssist accessory-drive hybrid technology before, in cars like the Chevrolet Malibu, Buick Regal, Buick LaCrosse, and Chevrolet Impala. The automaker last offered a hybrid pickup truck on the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado.

Chevrolet and GMC say that opting for the eAssist model adds only $500 to the price of a comparably equipped truck. The Sierra eAssist can tow 9,400 lb and the Silverado can tow 6,700 lb; a Chevrolet spokesman said the difference is due to different rear-axle ratios on the trucks.

The new 2017 GMC Acadia is smaller and lighter than its predecessor, and it will come with a slightly lower base price, too. The new crossover starts at $29,995 with destination in its base SL trim level with front-wheel drive, $1,905 cheaper than the 2016 Acadia’s base price.

Compared to the previous model, the 2017 GMC Acadia has more technologies and features, including an updated infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a rear-seat alert designed to warn parents if they forget a child in the back seat. The car now comes standard with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine good for 194 hp, which is estimated to return up to 22/28 mpg (city/highway) with front-wheel drive, thanks in part to a standard stop-start feature; the old Acadia managed only 17/24 mpg with its old standard V-6 engine and front-wheel drive. A 3.6-liter V-6 with 310 hp is optional on the new model, allowing the Acadia to tow up to 4,000 lb. Both engines mate to a six-speed automatic transmission.

2017 GMC Acadia rear three quarters2

Moving up to the 2017 GMC Acadia SLE costs $33,375 for a front-wheel-drive mode and $35,375 for all-wheel drive. The SLT costs $39,275 and $42,375, respectively, while the fully loaded Denali is $45,845 with front-wheel drive and $47,845 with all-wheel drive. Denali models offer luxury features like Continuously Variable Ride Control suspension, HID headlights, chrome exterior trim, unique wheels, and aluminum interior trim.

The 2017 GMC Acadia also offers a more off-road-like model called the All Terrain, which comes only with all-wheel drive for $40,040. It features a unique twin-clutch all-wheel-drive system, a five-passenger interior, unique wheels, and black exterior trim.

Acadia buyers can pick between five-, six-, or seven-seat configurations, and new active-safety options include forward-collision warning with automatic braking, automatic high-beam headlights, a 360-degree camera, and the aforementioned Safety Seat Alert. They join features that were already offered on the old Acadia, like lane-keep assist, blind-spot warnings, and parking sensors.

The 2017 GMC Acadia is on sale this spring.

While the Ford F-150 Raptor is perhaps the gold standard in terms of OEM off-road capability, the Ram 1500 Rebel shows that more modest upgrades can also make a regular truck ready to tackle the mud. Now General Motors is joining the fray with the 2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain X.

While not a standalone entry like the Raptor or Rebel, the Sierra All Terrain X is a set of packages that will only be offered for 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab pickups with four-wheel drive. The package essentially beefs up the Sierra’s already proficient off-road capabilities and includes a new Eaton locking rear differential, plus the Z71’s off-road suspension package that includes Rancho shocks, a skid plate for the transfer case, a spray-on bed liner, a better-flowing air intake, and hill descent control.

In addition to the All Terrain package, GMC will offer an upgraded “X Package” for the 2016 GMC Sierra which adds a set of Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac Mud-Terrain tires on 18-inch aluminum wheels, side steps, a bed-mounted bar to support off-road LED lights, LED headlights, and a sports exhaust that bumps horsepower for the truck’s 5.3-liter V8 engine from 355 hp to 365 hp.

“Styling is the biggest influence on Sierra customers and the new Sierra All Terrain X builds on that with a more aggressive, personalized appearance that complements its exception capability,” Duncan Aldred, GMC’s Vice President of Sales and Marketing, said in a statement. To satisfy those consumers, the All Terrain and X packages also include a host of unique appearance pieces to signify the special nature of the truck, including a unique grill and bumper, body-colored door handles, and a host of blacked-out features around the truck.

The 2016 GMC Sierra All Terrain and additional X packages will go on sale later this spring, though GMC has yet to release any pricing details. The Sierra will be available in Onyx Black, Summit White, Stone Blue Metallic, Iridium Metallic, Crimson Red Tintcoat, and Light Steel Gray Metallic, although we highly recommend the particularly menacing black-on-black scheme featured in the photos.

Honey, GMC shrunk the Acadia. The new Acadia loses weight and shrinks in length, as it moves from its old “Lambda” chassis to General Motors’ new “Chi” architecture. In the process, the GMC Acadia now offers both five- and seven-passenger configurations, not just the three-row version from before. We took a closer look at the 2017 GMC Acadia, and picked out five things you might not have heard about GM’s newest crossover.

Rear Seat Alert

The 2017 GMC Acadia packs a unique Rear Seat Alert system as standard, which can warn the driver if he or she forgets a child or important object in the rear seat. While this seems slightly gimmicky, GMC is aiming the feature at reducing the tragic deaths of infants and young children who are inadvertently left in a hot vehicle for too long. The system works by detecting whether the rear doors are opened within 10 minutes of the car being started or shut off. When the driver goes to leave the vehicle, a warning is displayed in the center gauge cluster, along with an audible chime to let them know an item — or child — might have been left behind.

Charge five things at once

That’s right, the 2017 GMC Acadia features five individual USB ports for charging all your family’s devices. Two up front, two for the middle row, and a fifth port for the third-row passenger.

New twin-clutch all-wheel drive system

GMC introduced a new, more capable off-road All-Terrain trim level for the new Acadia, and it comes with an advanced all-wheel-drive system. The new twin-clutch system is share with the upcoming 2017 Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XT5, and gives the new All-Terrain Acadia a sharper edge when the paved road ends. The catch? The All-Terrain is only available in two-row configuration, whereas other versions of the Acadia can be had with three rows of seats.

Assembly plant change

With the shift from the old Lambda platform to GM’s Chi architecture, the 2017 GMC Acadia will now be built at GM’s manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, whereas the outgoing model was assembled in Lansing, Michigan. The Acadia’s platform-mates, the Chevrolet Traverse and Buick Enclave, soldier on in the Lansing plant for now on the Lambda platform.

Big bump in fuel economy

The 2017 GMC Acadia is much more fuel efficient than before, in part because it’s lighter, but also because the car now offers a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with front-wheel drive in addition to its thirsty V-6. That allows the car to get 22 city mpg and 28 highway, up from the 17 city and 24 highway for the old 3.6-liter front-wheel drive Acadia.

The Acadia was purpose-built for families

With an abundance of storage nooks and crannies, the Acadia is ready for kid hauling. Tri-level storage in the rear doors and a middle-row pull-out drawer (pictured above) for three-row Acadias means the crossover has plenty of room for a growing family.

Continually Variable Dampening system improves ride quality

An optional variable damping system automatically compensates for body roll to ensure the crossover’s ride is as smooth as possible. This trick suspension is available on the top-level 2017 GMC Acadia Denali.

DETROIT — When you have the Yukon and Yukon XL, who needs the large GMC Acadia? Though the Acadia has been a big seller for GMC for nearly a decade, the new model has been shrunk to a true midsize CUV, losing a full 7.2 inches in overall length, and about 700 pounds. It shares its 112.5-inch wheelbase (and thus its basic platform) with the new Cadillac XT5.

The Acadia becomes a true midsize crossover, at 193.6 inches in overall length, and portends the near future of the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, plus, potentially, a stretched three-row version of the new Cadillac XT5. The Acadia is 4.1 inches longer than the new Caddy, allowing it to be available in three-row and two-row versions, with seating for five, six or seven passengers depending on configuration. This means that the next-generation GMC Terrain also expected for the 2017 model year will shrink somewhat, to become a true compact crossover. The new Acadia rides on GM’s Chi platform and the Terrain moves to the Delta platform.

The 2016 Acadia has a curb weight of 4,656 pounds when equipped with front-wheel-drive, whereas the equivalent 2017 GMC Acadia drops below two tons, to 3,956 pounds. It also loses 3.9 inches in height, to 68.7 inches, and all this makes it possible to equip the new Acadia with a 2.5-liter four from GM’s new engine family that makes 194 hp and 190 lb-ft of-torque. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, and GMC estimates fuel mileage of 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, for the FWD model.

GM’s new 3.6-liter V-6 remains available, also with a six-speed automatic, and is rated at 310 hp and 271 lb-ft. GMC expects a 17/25-mpg rating with FWD. The new Acadia also becomes GMC’s first model with stop-start technology.

A new drive mode selector includes Normal, Snow, Sport and Trailer/Tow modes for FWD Acadias, and 2×4 AWD disconnect, 4×4, Sport, Off Road and Trailer/Tow modes for AWD models.

The design of the 2017 GMC Acadia evolves with squared-off wheel arches like the Terrain and the pickup trucks, wraparound rear side windows with dark D-pillars and a chrome-trimmed grille. The Denali version comes with HID headlamps, while other Acadias get halogen projectors. The Acadia Denali also comes with a chrome grille, integrated chrome side trim, chrome-accented door handles, a chrome lower fascia, and special six-spoke wheels.

As for its utility, the 2017 GMC Acadia will come with a split-folding second row that allows the curbside seat to slide and tilt forward, even with a forward-facing child seat in place, and a driver-side section that tips and slides forward for easy third-row entry. The optional split third row folds flat, and there are levers in the cargo area to make it easy to fold both the second and third rows from inside the tailgate. GMC says cargo volume is 79 cubic feet with both rows folded flat.

Other features to entice customers to trade in minivans include a standard rear-seat alert to remind drivers when an item has been left behind in the second- or third row, and USB charge ports for all three rows.

Active safety features include forward pedestrian detection and braking, low-speed forward automatic braking standard on SLT-2 and Denali trim levels, forward automatic braking available on Denali, a Surround-Vision camera, forward collision alert, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, blind spot warnings, and front- and rear parking sensors.

There’s also optional IntelliLink infotainment system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An optional Tow Vision Trailering system uses a rear-vision camera to line up the hitch with a trailer, and to show a view of the trailer while driving.
