There’s a new option out there for buyers seeking a four-seater Ferrari. Those who don’t need all the falderal of the GTC4Lusso’s 12 cylinders can opt for a version with a twin-turbo turbo V-8. Ferrari calls the GTC4Lusso T “sporty and versatile, as well as perfect for driving on a daily basis.”

The car is the first four-seater Ferrari to receive a turbocharged V-8, and the first four-person V-8 Ferrari since the much-maligned Mondial from the 1980s. The 3.9-liter unit pumps out 600 hp, down from the standard model’s 680 ponies. But it offers a whopping 560 lb-ft of torque, an increase from 514 lb-ft in the V-12 model. Ferrari estimates the T can hit 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds, or 0.1 second slower than the V-12. The GTC4Lusso is the latest model to receive a version of Ferrari’s new boosted eight-cylinder, following the 488 GTB and California T. Compared to the 3.9-liter in the 488, the GTC4Lusso’s is down 60 hp, though it’s up 48 hp from the unit in the California T.

Unlike its V-12 sibling, the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is a rear-wheel-drive car. Ferrari says it’s also lighter and increases weight bias toward the rear. For sharper cornering maneuvers, the car offers Side Slip Control and four-wheel steering to steer the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts.

Debuting at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the GTC4Lusso replaces the shooting brake FF. Inside, it features an upgraded interior complete with a central 10.25-inch touchscreen and a dual cockpit setup that gives the passenger side its own screen. These tech tidbits also carry over to the T model.

The Ferrari GTC4Lusso T will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show next week.

Before the Ferrari had even arrived it was causing a sensation. My wife’s best friend, Nanette, is a ravenous sports-car aficionado (she once owned an Aston Martin DB9), and when I told her I’d be driving a new California T convertible for the weekend, she froze, clapped her hands to her wide-eyed face, and screamed two words: one of them was “holy,” the other ended with a “k” but wasn’t “sunblock.” A Ferrari will do that to a person. Naturally, I promised Nanette a ride.

Actually, I was pretty amped myself. Mind you, this was in spite of having previously driven the original edition of the California—Ferrari’s most popular single model ever—and coming away wondering if someone had slipped a prancing-horse badge onto a Lay-Z-Boy. Despite around 10,000 copies being sold in the past five years, the old California felt tepid, flabby in the knees—and for sure it didn’t look the part, its shape having more in common with a balloon animal than a rocketship. But the California T…well, now we’re talking about a prancing horse of a different color. This new, thoroughly reworked roadster brandishes an only slightly detuned version of the same twin-turbo V-8 that has repeatedly rocked me silly in the 488GTB. What’s more, the new California T is a beauty, leaner, far more aggressive, its forward flanks recalling the famous pontoon fenders of Ferrari’s illustrious 1957 Testa Rossa. I could hardly wait for Friday afternoon to roll around.

What people who’ve never had the good fortune to drive a Ferrari don’t understand is, these cars aren’t about performance numbers and comparison charts. A Ferrari is a portal into a driving realm of art and history and passion that borders on the spiritual. To sit in a Ferrari’s sumptuous driver’s seat, savoring the aroma of leather and the voluptuous view over the hood; to press the red starter button on the steering wheel and hear the V-8 light off with a cannon-fire report through quad exhausts; to flick one of the big shift paddles at redline and feel the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission crack off an upshift so fast the M80-like tailpipe explosion that follows seems at least a city block behind you…these are merely a few of the sensations that delight and excite and bedazzle any soul lucky enough conduct a Ferrari with his or her own hands.

2016 Ferrari California T interior overview

When it finally arrived, the California T did not disappoint. Within seconds of my taking to an LA thoroughfare, the new bodywork began working its seductive magic. For some reason, the open-top Hollywood tour buses were out in full force that day, and every time I pulled up behind one at a stoplight, the heads would begin to turn—first one, then three, then the whole bus, smartphones and DSLRs and selfie sticks snapping and flashing away at the Italian supermodel. Unlike the old one, this California exudes star power.

It’s got plenty of the other kind of power, too. Okay, the California T’s twin-turbo V-8 may make 108 fewer horses than version in the harder-core 488GTB, but you’ve still got 553 of them under your right foot—enough to hit 60 mph in under 3.6 seconds. More impressive is the bounteous torque on tap: the California blasts forward with an extravagant brawn you simply wouldn’t find in many of Ferrari’s previous, high-revving naturally aspirated V-8s. And if you’re worried that the turbos muffle the Italian maker’s famous exhaust symphony, don’t. True, the unblown 458 Italia is edgier, more electrifying in its tenor pitch. But the California T’s warmer, throatier baritone is hardly disappointing—it’s just different. Don’t worry: one blast through the gears and every hair on your neck will be aimed straight up at the constellation Pegasus.

I picked up Nanette for her promised ride, and we headed to one of my favorite mountain roads—lots of tight turns, so lacking in traffic it’s almost private. Naturally, I’d put the folding hardtop down, a maneuver that requires the tremendously taxing procedure of pressing a single button and waiting about 20 seconds. The sunlight was bathing the gorgeous cockpit as I hammered down on the gas to start our run. The tires squealed, Nanette squealed, I snapped off couple lightning upshifts, then squeezed hard on the big carbon-ceramic binders as a quick left-hander approached. Wow does this baby corner! For a machine allegedly more “plush GT” then “dedicated racer” (ride quality is amazingly cushy), the California T feels superbly planted and controllable when running hard. Credit quicker steering, 12 percent stiffer springs than before, and the latest version of Ferrari’s Grand Prix-proven F1 Trac traction-control system. This is a sports car you could easily live with every day—it never complains in traffic, the clutch works smoothly even in an urban crawl—but it’s got the goods for serious entertainment when the mood for adrenaline strikes. On the other hand, if you’re intrigued by the “rear seats” sitting there behind the fronts, well, forget about them (unless you’re stowing your briefcase or a teddy bear). We tried to bring Nanette’s boyfriend along, but at six feet-plus tall, he couldn’t wedge himself back there. Sorry, Carlo.

By the time we ended our run, Nanette had laughed and cheered and shouted with so much joy she’d made my throat hoarse. But that’s a Ferrari’s rare gift: just being in one makes you feel special, while actually experiencing the car at speed is like listening to a Puccini opera while riding the Kingda Ka coaster at Six Flags.

Adding the “T” has brought that uncanny Ferrari magic to the California roadster. At last the car is worthy of the prancing horse on its nose. It’s also deserving of a lofty descriptor its predecessor wasn’t: unforgettable.

Originally, Ferrari had stated that only 499 units of the LaFerrari would be built. Now a 500th example, bound for auction, will roll off the production line in Maranello for the express purpose of raising relief funds to aid the victims of the recent earthquake in Italy.

A week ago, the 6.2-magnitude quake demolished towns and villages across the mountains of central Italy, leaving close to 300 dead and hundreds wounded. More than 4,000 people do not have a home to return to, and rescue crews continue their efforts.

Ferrari has yet to disclose where the auction will take place or when. It’s also unclear if the last LaFerrari will be a coupe or the newly announced open-top LaFerrari Aperta.

Ferrari came to this decision after it invited both German and Italian governments to hold bilateral talks at Ferrari with Sergio Marchionne, Ferrari’s CEO, to discuss how to best help those affected.

The LaFerrari uses a naturally aspirated V-12 engine coupled to a hybrid electric motor that produces a total output of 950 horsepower. When first introduced, the LaFerrari cost each hand-selected owner about $1.4 million before options.

Recently, a matte black LaFerrari sold at an auction during Monterey Car Week for $5.17 million, more than tripling the sticker price of the hybrid hypercar. Given that valuation, we’re sure that when auctioned to benefit the earthquake’s victims, that number will be significantly higher.

The Ferrari 488 GTB is one of the faster supercars available, thanks in part to the wonderful 3.9-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 hiding behind the driver. This engine is one of the best on the market, as is the case with most dynamos from the storied Italian automaker. To our delight, Ferrari featured an in-depth breakdown of the 3.9-liter in a brand-new video, giving us an unobstructed glance inside the engine.

Ferrari treats us to CGI’d cutaways of various mechanical components, including the all-important turbochargers. Better yet, the process is accompanied by a soundtrack that’s sounds as though it’s lifted straight from the ending of almost every single Marvel film to date. Appropriate for this car’s character.

ferrari 488 gtb rear three quarters from above

Ferrari’s return to turbocharging was a hotly contested subject among the Ferrari faithful. It’s clear Ferrari expected this, and went to great care to ensure the performance and capability was as close to perfection as possible. Seeing what goes into making one of the most astonishing supercars on the planet, and the level of precision required is nothing short of humbling.

What’s even more astonishing is that even with two turbochargers, Ferrari has managed to keep that distinct natural-breathing Ferrari V-8 sound. With the 488, Ferrari has managed to stay true to its heritage and give both the owner and those outside the car an aural experience that is uniquely Ferrari.

Check out the video below to see how Ferrari’s newest V-8 comes together.

Our friends over at Petrolicious are back with a new video, and this time, it’s a little different. Most videos involve an in-depth interview with the owner and a look into the history of why he or she purchased, maintains, or drives the featured car. This week’s video is the first offering in Petrolicious’ new “Morning Coffee” segment, a series that indulges the senses by focusing on just the aural and visual portions. To kick this series off with a bang, Petrolicious enlisted the help of renowned Ferrari collector David Lee and his sublime Ferrari 288 GTO.

In the beginning of the video, Lee cranks the 288 in his darkened garage and heads out to the California mountains for a morning drive. As usual, the footage, location, and car is gorgeous. Unlike other Petrolicious videos, Lee remains a silent wheelman, ripping the mighty 288 GTO through winding mountain roads.

Of course, our favorite portions of the video involve the wonderful sound of the 288 GTO’s 2.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. This was the predecessor to the immortal Ferrari F40, and carries a heap of motorsports pedigree and performance behind the Gran Turismo Omologato badge. That relatively small V-8 pumps out an impressive 400 hp and 366 lb-ft of torque, enough to launch the 288 to 60 mph in around five seconds, and on its way to a top speed of 186 mph, the first street-legal production car to reach that milestone.

Skip your morning latte and enjoy the wonderful sounds of David Lee’s 288 GTO in the video below.

Normally, a race between a Ferrari 488 GTB and a 3-metric-ton ambulance would prove painfully predictable. But what if the driver behind the ambulance was four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel?

In one epic showdown, Vettel swaps places with emergency services driver Alex Knapton. With Vettel in the ambulance and Knapton in the Ferrari, it’s time to see who can drive faster around one lap at the famous Bruntingthorpe track in the U.K. Obviously, the race couldn’t be any more mismatched, given the 488 GTB produces 660 hp and the ambulance only produces about 116 hp.

It’s not a close race, but both drivers seem to perform quite well on the track. One hits 2 minutes, 17 seconds while the other takes the crown with a time of 2:10:48.

The YouTube video is presented by Shell, which has been a partner of Vettel’s team, Scuderia Ferrari, since the 1930s. Watch the video below to see who wins this epic race, but we bet you could guess anyway.

Ryan Tuerck’s insane Ferrari-engined Scion FR-S build is starting to come together, and in the latest video the Formula Drift driver goes over what has been done to the car so far and what the plans are for the future.

To recap, Tuerck is stuffing an F136 4.5-liter flat-plane-crank V-8 from a Ferrari 458 Italia into the engine bay of a Scion FR-S. In the initial teaser video, we were only shown some of the “what” and none of the “how,” but in the latest video Tuerck gets into more of the plan’s specifics. One of the biggest questions we, along with apparently most viewers, had was how the induction system would work with the intake manifold sticking out several inches above the hoodline and the throttle bodies right up against the windshield. Tuerck explains that the wipers will have to be removed, and that intake will be routed through the cabin. A custom induction box with two high-flow air filters will sit in the dash, which will connect to the throttle bodies via a carbon fiber piece running under the dash and through the firewall. The induction box will breathe cold air through ducts placed in the front fenders.

Not surprisingly, space is pretty tight in the FR-S’ engine bay with a 90-degree, dual-overhead-cam V-8 shoehorned in there. With that said, one of the biggest challenges will be fitting a set of exhaust headers that retain the Ferrari’s characteristic sound. Tuerck admits he has no idea how that’s going to happen, but says he has faith in the builders. For the remainder of the video, Tuerck talks about chassis bracing and radiator relocation.

There’s still no word on what gearbox will back the now front-mounted Ferrari engine, but we’re guessing that will be addressed in a later update. Tuerck announced that the build will be finished in October. Check out the video below to learn more about this Italo-Japanese Frankenstein’s monster.

Collectors of vintage Ferraris are of a different breed. It’s a market where a $10 million car is seen as middle-of-the-road, and some historically significant Ferraris reach well into the $30 million range. In no uncertain terms, the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is the most sought-after Ferrari for the well-moneyed madmen who use the cars as investments, display pieces, and most importantly, status symbols. Unfortunately, 250 GTOs rarely trade hands, and when they do, the price tags have in some cases rocketed into the $50 million range. Now, a very rare and very desirable Ferrari is roaring onto the auction stage, and it will likely claim a fat check from an angst-ridden owner who couldn’t get his or her hands on a GTO.

Among aficionados, the 330 LMB is sometimes seen as a continuation of the GTO formula. Up front, a 4.0-liter V-12 sends 390 hp to the rear wheels, a bump from the 250 GTO’s initial 3.0-liter V-12. Whereas the GTO was built on the bones of the competitive 250 GT SWB, the LMB sported under-body structure as the luxury-focused Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.

Unfortunately, the LMB was not used in many competitive events, as both race teams and constructors moved away from the front-engine configuration. The 330 LMB was an oddity, and did not claim any major victories, apart from a solid fifth-place finish at Le Mans in 1963.

This particular car is the first of the 330 LMBs to make a public debut. The broker overlooking the private treaty sale doesn’t mention any significant motorsport history, but does confirm the car has enjoyed lengthy bouts in historical motorsport events with famous drivers behind the wheel, including Derek Bell and Tom Kristensen.

Regardless, don’t assume you can pick this up as a budget 250 GTO alternative. While it could be considered a footnote in Ferrari’s history, the LMB carries proper weight and pedigree from the GTO program. Just four LMBs were ever created, making this a much rarer proposition than the GTO, of which 39 were made.

Taking into consideration the rarity of the LMB, Hagerty Insurance lists the average value of a 1963 Ferrari 330 LMB around $32 million. For those interested buyers, consider yourself warned.

The 330 LMB goes up for private treaty sale during Monterey’s Car Week later this summer.

Pro drifter Ryan Tuerck just became the first person to drift the road course at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, and now he’s given us a taste of his next mad-scientist project: dropping a Ferrari 458 engine into a Toyota GT86.

The video opens up with a bare-bones white GT86 frame, completely stripped of wheels, interior, and drivetrain. What we see next is the 458 supercar’s F136 4.5-liter flat-plane V-8 in all its glory, with various parts taped off and ready for installation. The music shifts to give us a sample of what the engine sounds like – a very different engine note from the twin-turbo Toyota 2JZ inline-six currently sitting in Tuerck’s Scion FR-S. In the 458 Italia, the rev-happy V-8 made an explosive 562 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque.

We see the Italian engine sitting in the Japanese sports car’s engine bay, but the “how” of the build has yet to be revealed. As the engine is positioned now, the Ferrari’s sculpted intake manifold rests well above the hood line. It also remains to be seen what transmission will be used, as the V-8 originally sat in a midship layout in the 458 Italia, and was joined to a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle. Who knows if the engine is in its final position or the builders just did a quick mockup for the video.

We’re left with the message, “Stay Tuned,” and we expect Tuerck to post more details on this insane swap in the near future.

Check out the teaser video of Ryan Tuerck’s latest project below.

Unsurprisingly, it turns out Sergio Marchionne wasn’t kidding about the LaFerrari Spider. If you were one of the lucky 499 who purchased the original LaFerrari coupe, you are likely already in line for seconds, but for those who weren’t at the super-exclusive preview, the Italian automaker just revealed the convertible hypercar ahead of its Paris debut.

On paper, this seems like a logical step for Ferrari, but the existence of a LaFerrari Spider has a deeper historical significance than you might imagine. Ferrari only puts claim to five separate halo cars since the 1980s, including the 288 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo, and the LaFerrari. With the exception of the new Spider, Ferrari never created a special edition or variant of a halo car. Essentially, cars like the F40 and the Enzo were perceived by Ferrari as special enough in their own right, with no need for additional configurations.

LaFerrari Spider top

In that regard, the LaFerrari Spider is the first of its kind. As of now, Ferrari is keeping official details of the car, including even the official name, close to its chest. Crucially, the automaker does confirm the powertrain, power outputs, and performance remain the same as the coupe. This means a 789-hp 6.3-liter V-12 partners up with a 161 hp electric motor to send 950 hp to the rear wheels, warping the hypercar to 60 mph in under three seconds, and onto a top speed of 217 mph. Each car comes equipped with both a removable hard and soft top.

If this is the first time you have seen the car, don’t bother ringing up your friendly neighborhood Ferrari dealer. The Spider was already revealed to a cadre of privileged owners, and predictably, it’s already sold out. Expect to see the majority of the LaFerrari roadsters parked at vacation homes in Monaco, right next to the owner’s Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and Pagani.
