The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado receives a new eight-speed automatic and a few updates to its 3.6-liter V-6 engine. The truck goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year.

The new eight-speed auto, replacing a six-speed, weighs about the same as its predecessor but features a wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread. Chevrolet says this results in a numerically higher first gear ratio, helping drivers start off the line more easily while carrying heavy loads. Lower rear axle ratios on the transmission should reduce engine rpm on the highway and improve fuel economy, the automaker said.

With its new transmission, the Colorado further differentiates itself from its competitors. The Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline, and Nissan Frontier offer no more than six gears. But Chevrolet has also made another change to the Colorado: a new and improved V-6. It now puts out 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque, up 3 hp and 6 lb-ft from the previous model. Revised direct injection, updated variable valve timing, and new cylinder deactivation technology make up the engine improvements.

The fully redesigned Chevrolet Colorado debuted for the 2015 model year. For 2016, it received a new engine option: a 2.8-liter turbodiesel inline-four. It also offers a standard gasoline 2.5-liter inline-four engine with 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. For 2016, the four-cylinder topped out at 20/27 mpg city/highway, while the 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine was rated at 18/26 mpg. The turbodiesel model hit 22/31 mpg.

General Motors hasn’t made any announcement yet about the GMC Canyon, but we imagine it will offer a similar set of updates. Pricing has not yet been released.

Amidst the endless rumors of a mid-engine Chevy Corvette come these spy shots of what is not just another C7 Z06 or Grand Sport. Thanks to several telltale signs, we think this is the 2018 Corvette ZR1.

The first are the fixed mounts for what can only be a sizeable rear wing, which appears to be stashed inside the black-and-silver car. These sit slightly further inward than the mounts on the C7R, the only C7 fitted with a wing to date. Unfortunately, the angle of the photos makes it difficult to identify other details on the tail and unable to see what kind of diffuser the car is running.

Second is the heavy camo used on the front end, which implies that Chevy REALLY doesn’t want anyone to see what is going on there. A mild update of the Z06, as some have speculated, would not necessitate this kind of coverage. The bulge is definitely much larger, something that is more pronounced on the red-roofed car.

Speculation as to what is underhood of the ZR1 has been rampant; candidates have included a juiced version of the Z06’s blown 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 and a new twin-turbo V-8. Given that the Z06, as well as the ZL1 and the C6 ZR1, all push 650 hp, the C7 ZR1 would have to join the seven-handle club with authority to put enough daylight between the lesser – and prior – models to justify its six-figure pricetag. Say 750 hp? The driveline may not be able to handle that much, but we can believe, at least until the car is unveiled, likely in January at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.

Camaro fans have reason to celebrate this year. Not only is Chevy planning a big birthday bash for the nameplate’s 50th anniversary, but the brand is launching the most powerful production Camaro ever: the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Now, GM has dropped a number of details on the ZL1, along with the high-performance 1LE package, including pricing and performance estimates.

The Camaro ZL1 coupe will start at $62,135, including $995 destination, while the ZL1 convertible will retail for $69,135. Those prices don’t include a gas guzzler tax, which is yet to be determined as EPA numbers are still being finalized. The new fixed-roof model starts $4,485 higher than the 2015 Camaro ZL1 coupe. However, the new ZL1 does pump out 650 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque from its supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8, or 70 hp and 84 lb-ft more than the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8 in the previous model. The 2017 ZL1 comes standard with a six-speed manual, but has the option of a new 10-speed automatic transmission that was co-developed with Ford. Meanwhile, the 1LE package will cost $4,500 for Camaro V-6 LT coupes and $6,500 for the V-8 1SS coupe. LT models receive the Camaro SS’ FE3 suspension while 1LE SS models get the ZL1’s FE4 Magnetic Ride suspension and electronic limited-slip differential.

In addition to pricing, GM revealed its performance estimates for the ZL1 and 1LE. When equipped with the available 10-speed automatic, the ZL1 will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds and finish the quarter mile in 11.4 seconds at 127 mph. Just as the standard sixth-gen Camaro lost weight switching to the Alpha platform, the ZL1 slims down by 220 pounds compared to the previous model.

Camaros equipped with the 1LE package don’t improve much acceleration-wise, with 0-60 mph estimated at 5.2 seconds for V-6 models and 4.2 seconds with the V-8. Handling, however, does improve. GM estimates the LT 1LE is capable of 0.97 g, while the SS 1LE can pull 1.02 g. The SS 1LE can stop from 60 mph in 107 feet, matching the ZL1’s braking performance. The LT 1LE needs a little more room at 112 feet, according to GM.

The 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the 1LE performance package arrive later this year.

Automobile contributor Andy Pilgrim is an accomplished professional race driver, with 65 wins and five championships to his credit. His career highlights include winning the 12 Hours of Sebring, Rolex 24 at Daytona, Petit Le Mans, and five podium finishes in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This season he drives a Porsche 911 GT3 R in select events in the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship.

We sent Pilgrim to test the new 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport on the 2.0-mile Atlanta Motorsports Park road course, and to say our driver and the Grand Sport were quick is an understatement. Pilgrim’s best lap, seen at top, was 1:23.63. To put the time in context, Chevrolet two days previously put Corvette Racing IMSA star Oliver Gavin in a Grand Sport at the same track. Gavin’s best lap, seen below: 1:24.78.

DAWSONVILLE, Georgia — This looks like a fun place, I thought to myself. The truth is, all I could see while standing close to the pit wall was a slice of racetrack disappearing quickly over the hills to grandma’s house. I wasn’t quite sure at this point if the track was a lefty or a righty, but I did know I was going to learn this circuit in the new 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport.

I should mention that I’ve raced General Motors products for more than two decades, a highlight of which was co-driving alongside the late Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr. in a Corvette C5-R in 2001. But while many race fans associate me with GM, I have also raced numerous other cars for numerous other manufacturers. This year, for instance, I run select races in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for Black Swan Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3 R.

I mention a little about my racing history because it’s understandable if some of you may think I’m biased in favor of GM products. I want to be clear that my work for AUTOMOBILE is open, honest, and direct—regardless of manufacturer—as I share my observations and experiences. Frankly, I owe it to you, the reader, and nobody else. I will also throw some humor around because, well, testing cars puts a smile on my face.

Now, back to the 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. Despite any pretense about being race cars, even the meanest street cars do not behave like true race cars, and they spend 99 percent of their time on public roads. But to begin the Grand Sport experience, Chevy brought us to Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. Testing at a racetrack has its advantages, like being able to drive a car far harder than you ever could on the street. It also means we can exercise very capable sports cars to their maximum potential without fear of jail time or having an unscheduled meeting with a dump truck. Then again, I do remember meeting a maintenance truck coming from the opposite direction while flat-out at Road Atlanta a few years ago, so there are never any guarantees. But I digress.

Our drive actually began much earlier in the day at our hotel. The test cars were lined up, providing a good, instant picture of the 10 exterior colors and four interior-trim options available. I like the Grand Sport’s mean, athletic look. The standard Cup wheels can also be ordered in five finishes/colors, and you can add red seatbelts if you desire. How many total choices you get depends on whether you go for the 1LT, 2LT, or 3LT package. This is the most highly optioned Corvette that Chevy has ever offered.

Interested early buyers can order a 3LT Grand Sport with a collector’s edition option (only 1,000 will be made). This includes Tension Blue accents inside and out, a tribute to the blue accents/stripes on the original Corvette Grand Sports. Grand Sport heritage goes back to 1963 and Zora Arkus-Duntov, when five Grand Sport race cars were built. As Corvette aficionados know, those five original versions are now coveted, priceless jewels.

The latest Grand Sport coupe’s base price is $66,445 (convertible $70,445). The wider, Corvette Z06 body on the car allows the massive 19-by-10-inch front and 20-by-12-inch rear wheels to fit. There are two tire choices to wrap around those wheels: Michelin Pilot Super Sport run-flats are standard, and super-grippy Pilot Cup 2s are offered as an option. Sizes for both sets of tires are P285/30R-19 front and P335/25R-20 rear. The term “run-flat tire” used to send shivers down my spine, but those days are long gone. Michelin’s Super Sport run-flats work quite well. They can provide a claimed 1 g-plus lateral grip, which is enough to sling false teeth flying, so that’s fun. Opting for the $7,995 Z07 pack adds carbon-ceramic brakes, the Michelin Pilot Cup 2s, and the carbon-fiber ground effects package seen on current Z06s. For the drive out to the track, I grabbed a manual-transmission coupe with the 2LT trim package (automatic transmission is a $1,725 option).

I am not the largest person in the world at 5 feet 10 inches and 156 pounds, so bear this in mind as I talk about vehicle ergonomics. I found the Grand Sport seats supportive and far superior to earlier generation Corvette seats. However, I would like the seat-base side bolsters to be taller; the sides of my legs ended up on top of them. I would go with the sport-seat option as they also have larger, adjustable side bolsters that held me steady when cornering hard.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport paddle shifters

The Grand Sport’s suede-covered steering wheel is a nice piece, while seat and steering-wheel adjustment put me in exactly the driving position I needed, with clear gauge visibility. I sit relatively close to the steering wheel/pedals and did notice my legs were quite close to the underside of the dash. I’m not sure if this could be an issue for some larger/taller people if they also like to sit closer to the pedals.

A minimalist at heart, I found too many buttons and switches on the wheel, but this seems to be what people want these days. I used all the infotainment switches/push buttons on the way to the track with the help of my passenger, and everything worked as advertised, but I would be first in line for any option on any car that deletes everything but the climate control and a radio button. While I never do the whole phone-syncing thing, we were parked near other people in Grand Sports before we left the hotel and picked up someone else’s phone call in our car. It was not the first time I’ve seen this happen.

On our way to the track, we encountered freeway- and medium-speed winding country roads. I drove the car the way I believe the majority of owners will drive it: not like a madman. Road noise is average for a sports car with wide, low-profile tires, meaning we could carrying on a conversation at 70 mph at normal “inside voice” levels. Heel-toe downshifting is not an issue, but I used the rev-matching function most of the time. It worked well as long as I was decelerating but would occasionally miss the rev match a little if I downshifted in order to accelerate. The exhaust note inside the car is a low rumble when cruising and “ready to play” aggressive when you get on it.

What’s under the hood, then? The Grand Sport comes with the LT1 V-8 rated at 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque; Chevy says the car will do 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and the quarter-mile in 11.8.

I performed several stops and evasive maneuvers just to test stability and braking in possible real-world emergency situations. In full ABS-engaged, evasive/hard left-to-right complete stops, stability was excellent. If you slam on these brakes, you better know what’s behind you before they introduce themselves through your trunk, as this Corvette stops with the best. On-center steering is precise and not “searching” over pavement imperfections. Steering effort is light in Touring mode, which I was fine with, and stiffer in the sportier modes, never feeling numb or disconnected.

The magnetic-ride shocks just plain work, period. I was in the softest setting for most of the drive, and they soak up expansion joints, undulations, and worn-road rash as well as any luxury sedan. If in doubt, changing the setting to Sport will convince you. Magnetic ride is a must-have street option in my mind.

I arrived at Atlanta Motorsports Park fresh and ready to attack a new circuit. New tracks are something of a treat for me these days, and I still get excited at the prospect. The Grand Sports for track driving all had the Z07 package and racetrack-based adjustments made to ride height and wheel alignments. I initially had a couple of orientation laps with a GM engineer as a passenger. I knew some of the engineers there, and they asked me to set a lap time in a manual-transmission car for data purposes only. (Yeah. Sure, guys.)

Atlanta Motorsports Park is a challenging little track. It is a patience track thanks to some long corners; keeping maximum grip in a long corner without getting throttle- or steering-greedy takes patience. I especially like the long left-hander that begins in second gear and ends up in fourth gear leading back toward the start/finish line; it seems to go on for weeks. I was impressed with how much grip the Michelin Cup 2 tires offered and easily pulled a sustained 1.25g several times per lap. The ceramic brakes showed no signs of fade during my laps.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport shifter

As a track weapon, the Grand Sport is for real. At 3,428 pounds (3,487 for the convertible), the Grand Sport is 100 pounds lighter than today’s Z06, but the way it changes direction makes me think it could easily be 200 pounds lighter. This car will run lap times right up there with cars pushing significantly more horsepower, especially on twisty tracks. To me this is Chevrolet’s equivalent of the Porsche 911 GT3 in that it’s another giant killer with less than 500 horsepower and does silly-quick lap times. Unlike the GT3, a Grand Sport loaded for track use (Z07 package) comes in at less than $80,000.

I did only one timed lap in the automatic-transmission Grand Sport—and almost matched my fastest lap in the manual-equipped car. I’m pretty sure the automatic would ultimately do a bit quicker lap time, but only a stopwatch would know the difference. I did not turn off all the driving-aid nannies; I ran in Track/Race mode, which is the very least amount of “insurance” from a mistake, if you like. This mode allowed me to rotate the car on entry and slide the rear a little on exit with no interference from the systems.

2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport burnout 1

I found that the Grand Sport’s at-the-limit handling is predictable. Several corners at AMP have off-camber, falling-away entries that make them good candidates to cause an entry spin if you’re not careful. I was able to use aggressive trail braking to rotate the car and control the rate of rotation with brake modulation, even in the tricky turns. In a production car, you normally see understeer first as it’s easier to control, especially on the street, and this is true with the Grand Sport. In order to set quick laps, I had to use trail braking to load the front tire more in order to counteract the understeer.

Trail braking effectively pushes the front tires into the ground, which pretty much acts like aerodynamic downforce. But unlike aero downforce, as soon as you get off the brake the extra force is gone and understeer can return. To combat this, I must rotate the car as much as I need to before my trail braking is all finished, otherwise I will not be able to immediately mat the gas and exit. If you look at the video of my laps, you’ll see that I fit the entire sequence of off-throttle/initial braking/trail brake/rotation/off-brake/back to gas into the shortest possible distance. It’s a tricky balance. The way the Grand Sport allowed me to do exactly what I needed to do and extract my quickest lap was impressive.

As far as street handling, it’s quite a bit different. Driving the Corvette Grand Sport on any road with this much power, grip, and chassis balance means it probably views us with disdain, rolling its eyes at our feeble attempts to explore its limits. Basically, you see a corner, approach it as fast as you are comfortable, steer, and the Grand Sport rips you through to the other side. It’s certainly efficient, but never boring. It makes me smile to drive this kind of four-wheeled scalpel. The Grand Sport’s street handling is very neutral; I found no slide from either end of the car until approaching over 1g, and around that point it let me know with a slight understeer. Yes, you can turn off all the nannies; yes, you can lay rubber; and yes, you might only take out four mailboxes and 100 feet of picket fence if you’re lucky. I ran the Grand Sport in both Touring and Sport mode on the street and had no traction- or stability-control intrusion issues.

The 2017 Corvette Grand Sport works very well on the road and is an animal on the track. Corvette faithful will love this car, but I feel GM might be looking beyond that. Will it bring in new buyers? Will it move those independent voters? Forget the $66,445 base price for a minute. Let’s say you’re a performance-car buyer who drives your car to work every day and enjoys driving country roads on a Sunday morning. You might also run the occasional track day and quite like the idea of embarrassing friends who own cars costing four times as much. Plus, you want to be able to throw a couple of golf bags in the back every now and then. If you are indeed that person, the Grand Sport deserves a long look.

Earlier this year, GM and Lyft partnered up to launch the Express Drive ridesharing program that lets drivers use GM vehicles for a rental fee. Originally launched in Chicago, the program has now been expanded to include California and Colorado, and will feature the all-new 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV.

This summer, Express Drive will debut in San Francisco, giving drivers access to the largest electric vehicle fleet in ridesharing, including the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and Bolt EV hatchback. Denver will open later this year. Around 130,000 drivers who previously applied but didn’t qualify will now be able to drive on the platform.

Since March, the Express Drive program has been successful in Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., and Baltimore, with 30 percent of new drivers requesting the program. Nearly $2 million has been earned by Lyft drivers since the program’s official launch.

“We are very pleased with the success of Express Drive and how quickly the team implemented the program since our alliance was announced earlier this year. The Chevrolet Bolt EV and Volt are a perfect fit for ridesharing offering very low operating costs and a wide range of connectivity features for both drivers and passengers,” said Dan Ammann, GM president, in a release.

Along with the ride-sharing partnership, GM and Lyft announced earlier this year that they will begin developing an autonomous ride-sharing network. We previously reported that the two companies will begin testing an autonomous fleet of Chevrolet Bolt EV taxis on public roads. Lyft drivers will be on hand to intervene if needed, but it’s expected the driver will be taken out of the equation as the technology develops.

The Chevrolet Corvette is the most talked-about and read-about car online, according to a new study conducted by search advertising provider Swoop. But Ford takes the cake as the brand that garners the most attention online overall.

In the second quarter of the year, Ford edged out Chevrolet by less than one percentage point to become the vehicle with the most online exposure in the U.S. Honda came in third place, almost five percentage points behind Chevrolet. Dodge and Jeep rounded out the top five.

Swoop Most Visible Automakers Q2 2016

When it comes to individual cars, the Chevy Corvette commanded the most attention online in the second quarter. Not far behind was the Ford F-150, which incidentally, has been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for more than three decades. The Ford Mustang, Dodge Ram pickup, and Honda Civic finished just behind the F-150.

Swoop Most Visible Cars Q2 2016

Swoop also looked at how efficiently automakers spend their digital advertising dollars. According to the study, Ford spent just $0.58 million dollars for every 1 percent of digital exposure it gained online, compared to Toyota, which had to shell out nearly $6.30 million to reach that same goal. Swoop says this data highlights Toyota’s “position as a brand that sells well but doesn’t generate much organic digital ‘buzz'” compared to its rivals.

Swoop Auto Digital Spend Efficiency Q2 2016

Surprisingly, the now-discontinued Honda CR-Z performed quite well in the study. It placed eighth among the top 100 automotive models with the most brand exposure for the second quarter. It also performed second among compact cars, after the Honda Civic.

When it comes to midsize cars, Honda gained a large share of the exposure pie thanks to the Accord. Meanwhile, there weren’t any big winners among crossovers and luxury cars, given that those are highly competitive markets. Check out the charts below for a closer look at the “most visible” cars in each segment.

Swoop uses its own search engine to extract brand and model data from online pages. Its “Automotive Visibility Index” measures automakers with the most articles, discussions, and pages devoted to and read about over a given quarter of a year. “A search for an automotive brand is a singular point in time. Swoop details users’ full experiences, from that initial pageview on. For example, if someone searches for Honda and comes to an article, while Google Trends will register the Honda brand hit, Swoop will register it and however many other brands the user investigates over the course of browsing,” the company explains on its website.

It may be urban lore, but when asked for the meaning behind the name Camaro, some Chevrolet managers said it was a small, vicious animal that ate Mustangs.

General Motors unleashed the Camaro name on the world 50 years ago today. That means the tiny beast has a big party in the making, and Chevy will stage anniversary celebrations this summer during Detroit’s Woodward Dream Cruise, an annual rolling salute to those who love cars.

The original Camaro, codenamed Panther, was designed to battle the Ford Mustang which was shown as a concept in 1962 and then introduced April 17, 1964. Mustang was the first American “pony car” and the inspiration for a small field of affordable sporty coupes with long hoods and a wide stance that grew to include the Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, Plymouth Barracuda, and Dodge Challenger. Imports such as the Toyota Celica and Ford Capri further expanded the pool.

When it was time to name Chevrolet’s Mustang fighter, a project that had been codenamed Panther, GM held a playful press conference on June 28, 1966. Chevrolet General Manager Pete Estes  dubbed those in attendance as charter members of the “Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World” in their first and last meeting. Then he told the world the new car would be called the Camaro.

The public got its first look at the all-new Camaro in September 1966, and the original 1967 Camaro went on sale on September 29, 1966. GM sold 220,906 in the first year. Today, it is largely a two-car battle between Mustang and Camaro, both in their sixth generation, both smaller and lighter but retaining their mission to offer affordable performance. In 2015, Mustang won the sales race handily, selling 122,349 in the U.S. compared with 77,502 Camaros, and Ford maintains its lead through May of this year with almost 53,200 sales compared with 31,865 Camaros.

With anniversary planning in full swing, GM has provided a first look at some of the activities planned.

GM will offer tours starting at 7 a.m. on August 18 of the Lansing Grand River plant, where the current Camaro is built. The 45-minute tours end at 3:30 p.m. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at building the Camaro from the ground up,” said Todd Christensen, Camaro marketing manager. There will also be a car show, displays of past Camaros and a chance to talk to Camaro team members including Chief Engineer Al Oppenheiser. Owners can vie for spots in a parking area for up to 500 Camaros and there will be on-site food and Camaro merchandise for sale.

When GM resumed production of the Camaro in 2009 after a seven-year hiatus, it was built in Oshawa, Ontario. Moving it to Lansing in the fall of 2015 marked the first time the car has been built in Michigan. The all-new 2016 Camaro is smaller, lighter, more agile and rides on a new platform. It was named Motor Trend Car of the Year in 2016.

If robots are not your thing, Chevrolet will host “Camaros and Coffee” in Detroit starting at 7:30 a.m. on August 19. Everyone with a Camaro is invited to the Joe Louis Arena Riverfront parking lot where the first 500 cars will be staged and at 9:45 a.m. some 50th Anniversary edition Camaros will lead participants to Woodward Avenue to drive the Dream Cruise route.

And on August 20, the official day of the Dream Cruise, there will be a Camaro heritage display at the Chevrolet site along Woodward Avenue with some rare and iconic models as well as the new 2017 Camaro ZL1 and 1LE. For more Camaro history with pictures and design illustrations GM has created a special media site. Enthusiasts can stay on top of event plans here.

“Over the past half-century, the Camaro has fostered enthusiasm, camaraderie and memories like few other vehicles,” said Steve Majoros, marketing director of Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “It’s a passion Chevrolet takes seriously and the activities this summer are a way of giving back to those who have made the Camaro an icon.”

It’s time to clear those eyes and lean into the screen because these grainy spy photos reveal what is likely the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette that’s coming sooner rather than later. These photos, along with recent rumors, further solidify that General Motors is serious about producing the most balanced Corvette we’ve seen yet.

This mule was caught at GM’s Milford Proving Grounds. It’s disguised in C7 Corvette body panels and heavy camouflage, but there are a few clues suggesting this isn’t a normal Stingray. The mule’s rear hatch appears to be missing its glass cover, likely to provide enough cool air to the engine sitting behind the seats. The prototype is lapping the track alongside a C7 Corvette and a few Caddies like the CT6, which the photographer says should provide some perspective on the test mule’s stance and size.

A number of recent events have given hope to ‘Vette fans clamoring for a mid-engine version. Early last year, GM was caught testing a strange prototype that was essentially a mashup of a C7 Corvette and a Holden Commodore SSV, which the rumor mill suggested was housing its engine behind the front seats. In 2014, GM trademarked the name “Zora,” which could hint at a future Corvette moniker. The name is a reference to Zora Arkus-Duntov, the father of the Corvette who made numerous attempts to produce a mid-engine version.

Many GM engineers and executives have also tried to make a mid-engine Corvette a reality and it appears it could happen by the end of the decade. The 650-hp Corvette Z06 is already pushing the limits of the current front-engine, rear-drive platform, which means a mid-engine layout is perhaps the only option GM has to take the ‘Vette to the next level.

It’s a good year to be a hatchback fan: Chevrolet is bringing their Cruze Hatch to the U.S., Honda is coming out with a Civic Hatch again, and the Ford Focus RS is finally a thing for Americans in good ol’ America. This fall when the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback makes its way to dealerships it will start at $22,190, which includes an $875 destination charge. The Cruze Hatch will be available in LT and Premier trims, and additionally with the RS package. While the Cruze sedan has two lower trim levels than the hatchback (L and LS) the Cruze Hatch will come with more standard features, which should help with sales, since the $22,190 starting price makes it a bit pricier than some of the competition.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Hatch 2016 Ford Focus SE Hatch 2016 Toyota Corolla iM 2016 Mazda3 Hatch 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT 2016 Volkswagen Golf (4 door)
$22,190 $19,890 $19,255 $19,380 $18,800 $20,995

All Prices include Destination charges.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatch will feature a 4G LTE data connection with a WiFi hotspot, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, wireless mobile device charging (for compatible devices), and the Teen Driver suite of driver monitoring technology. Cargo capacity is, as expected, greater than the sedan: 47.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded versus 14.8 cubic feet in the sedan’s trunk. The sedan, with the same turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4, gets an EPA-estimated 29-30/41-42 mpg city/highway depending on which transmission you get. We expect the hatchback to get similar ratings from the EPA.

One thing the Chevrolet Cruze doesn’t have (yet) is a serious performance model to take on the likes of the Ford Focus ST (not to mention the RS) or the Volkswagen GTI. Is it time for another sporty compact from Chevrolet, in the same spirit as the late Cobalt SS? How does a Chevrolet Cruze SS sound to you? Let us know in the comments below.
