China is more and more becoming a crucial market for Bentley, especially with the introduction of the ultra-luxury Bentayga SUV. But big opulent sedans like the Mulsanne are still important too, and if Bentley wants to sell in China, it’ll have to play by their rules. According to one Bentley executive, that means switching to electrified power.

In an interview with  Autocar, product and marketing manager Hans Holzgartner said that talks are already taking place. “I wouldn’t say we’re discounting [hybrid engines] completely, but it looks like if you don’t have a full electric drive, even some of the hybrid drives just won’t get into some cities in China.”

Holzgartner points out that electric power, with its silence and bountiful low-end torque, is actually a perfect fit for comfort-focused luxury sedans like the Mulsanne., which will spend more time in city traffic than clipping apexes.

Sports cars are a tougher sell, on the other hand. Given the beefy batteries and loss of high-revving drama, a car like the Continental GT Speed might lose its edge by swapping traditional combustion for electric propulsion. The character of Bentley’s signature Speed line is also a matter of concern when it comes to Mulsanne EV.

“If you’ve got a Mulsanne Speed you’ll want to let rip every so often,” Holzgartner points out. “That’s going to be the challenge: creating something that can be fun as well.”

Bentley showed us a Hybrid Concept based on the Mulsanne in Beijing back in 2014, so this idea has clearly been on the brain for a few years. And with similar emissions restrictions perhaps on the horizon in Europe, the time for a Mulsanne EV may be ripe.

It’ll be interesting to see what an electric or hybrid Mulsanne looks and feels like. Our drive of the new 2017 Bentley Mulsanne left us delighted with an engine that just pulls and pulls with no end in sight, so Crewe has wellies to fill if it wants to shake things up this significantly.

Classic cars, more so than any brand-new car, builds equity on nostalgia and memories. In the case of William Medcalf, his father’s love of pre-war Bentleys inspired a lifelong passion, culminating in a full-bore Bentley restoration shop that houses his very own collection.

“It’s probably fair to say it’s my father’s fault,” said Medcalf, speaking on his love for the British marque. “His idea of a family holiday was 28,000 miles around America in a vintage Bentley.” Even from a very young age, Medcalf recalls a transcontinental journey with his father from Mongolia to Russia, and back down to France.

Medcalf’s Bentley-obsessed father was a toolmaker by trade, and would instruct his son on the skill. Medcalf said he was able to do whatever he wanted with his life, but he settled on vintage Bentleys. Now, he operates a highly-respected restoration workshop for the British cars.

With this passion-fueled career, he is able to put his own Bentleys through their paces on and off the track.  Toward the end of the video, Medcalf illustrates the pitfalls and challenges of driving a Bentley fast. These cars are neither small nor light. Ettore Bugatti once described the cars as “the world’s fastest lorries (trucks).” Gargantuan size aside, most race-ready Bentleys from the W.O. era carry unsynchronized “crash” gearboxes, making shifting quickly and efficiently a real challenge.

Check out William Medcalf’s love for the storied British automaker in the video below.

We’re barreling down one of the gloriously unrestricted sections of Germany’s autobahn deep in the Bavarian countryside, and as we begin to slowly turn into a gentle left-hand sweeper, we take a quick glance down at the speedo of the updated 2017 Bentley Mulsanne: 240 kilometers an hour, roughly 150 mph.

The Mulsanne’s hydraulic steering setup is heavy but direct; there is no play in the wheel. Yes, it’s a big car, but in no way does it feel sketchy at any time, at any speed. Bentley knows that few of its customers will ever actually drive its flagship sedan hard. But for those who want to, you can, right up to the Mulsanne Speed’s 190 mph ceiling—that is if you can find a long enough stretch of deserted autobahn.

While the changes to the 2017 Mulsanne lineup aren’t massive, there is one big addition, and we do mean big: the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase model, with its business-class jet approach for rear-seat passengers and 9.8 inches more rear-seat legroom. It joins the base Mulsanne and the Mulsanne Speed in further broadening out the range.

At the heart of every Mulsanne is the same twin-turbo, 6.75-liter V-8 that has powered the Bentley flagship since the launch of the modern-era car in 2010, mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. It’s a mill that has become synonymous with the brand and is one of the longest-lived engines in automotive history, featuring a diesel-like redline of 4,500 rpm and prodigious torque. In the base and long-wheelbase models, it’s rated at 505 horsepower and 752 lb-ft. Step up to the Speed (the first version of which debuted 18 months ago) and numbers jump to 530 horses and a crazy eight—811 lb-ft —with a 0-to-60 time of 4.8 seconds. To help keep the gas gulping just a little bit more manageable, a cylinder deactivation system is part of the mix.

It’s an engine that just pulls and pulls and then pulls some more, and can hum all day long at 2,000 rpm at 100 mph. When we needed to haul things down from the triple-digit tango, its brakes proved progressive and strong, especially in the Speed we rolled in, with its $17,335 carbon-ceramic brake package.

Two key issues Bentley wanted to address with the updated Mulsanne were improving over-the-road refinement and reducing cabin noise to add a bit more luxury feel alongside the car’s already impressive performance envelope. Several changes were implemented, including active engine mounts and updated rear control-arm suspension and subframe bushings. The air suspension’s continuous damping control system has also been recalibrated to offer a plusher ride at trundling speeds and lowers the car slightly when you’re getting after it out in the Bavarian countryside. Even the Dunlop tires were addressed; they were sprayed with special foam inside to help reduce noise in the cabin.

You can further dial in your Mulsanne’s ride the way you want it through the brand’s Drive Dynamics Control system with its Bentley, Comfort, and Sport modes, along with a Custom mode that you can calibrate a little more to your taste. The system modifies shock settings, throttle mapping, and transmission shift points. We spent most of our time locked into Bentley mode, the optimum setting offering the best balance for the car. It soaked up what little buckled pavement we could find with no issue and kept things in line at any speed. While the slightly more buttoned-down Speed predictably held the line a bit better under pressure and sounded a bit meaner when we put our flying spur into it, the standard-spec Mulsanne performed more than admirably at high speeds as well.

At first glance when walking around the outside of the Mulsanne, it doesn’t seem too far afield from the car it’s replacing. The most notable updates are at the front, where everything ahead of the A-pillar is new. “It was about modernizing and contemporizing the design and making a bold statement in the proportions and the details,” said Bentley senior designer Brett Boydell.

Highlights include a refreshed, vertical vane grille that’s more than 3 inches wider than before (Speed models get several unique bits, including a different grille treatment) and B-shaped wing vents in the lower part of the front fenders, both of which are specific to each model. The floating LED headlamps are completely new and now better aligned with each other and, according to Boydell, “were crafted and designed to echo a piece of jewelry.” Out back, as with the front, the bumper has been reshaped, as well as the taillamps.

2017 Bentley Mulsanne Speed interior

There are numerous changes inside as well, and that’s where predictably most of the options start piling onto the price tag. The Mulsanne starts at about $310,395 and easily pushes up past 400 large depending on the model. A new 8-inch touchscreen sits atop the center stack and augments the haptic control setup underneath. It’s a little button-heavy in the center, but everything is artfully arranged. Apple CarPlay is available if you desire. While we found the cockpit seating comfortable and eminently quilted, we did have a small issue with the left and right elbow placement, which was uneven from the armrest to the center tunnel.

Among the key options are the available entertainment system for $19,885, which gets you two removable 10.2-inch, Android-powered tablets in the back that control a multitude of vehicle features, the super 2,200-watt, 20-speaker Naim audio system, Google Maps, and backseat tables. The refrigerated bottle cooler will set you back a cool $10,970. And it goes on from there, although the semi-autonomous safety tech nanny options are a bit on the light side, with adaptive cruise the most prominent option. You want special veneers, colors, stitching? You name it; Bentley will work to make it happen within reason. Its craftspeople spend around 140 hours on average in each car, 400 hours on each Mulsanne in all.

Then there’s the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, which turns the rear-seat specification up a couple of more notches with a plethora of available and optional features. It has enough legroom for Shaquille O’Neal on stilts, motorized curtains and leg rests, your own sunroof, trick fold-out tables with 761 parts (not a misprint) that can hold up to 90 pounds, the bottle cooler, etc., etc. If you smoke, the ashtrays are simply brilliant, mini pieces of art, really; almost a shame to use them. To start, the States will get 25 EWBs, which may not be enough.

So it looks to be mission accomplished for the crew from Crewe. The Mulsanne remains as its flagship that is meant to be driven by its golden-heeled clientele as much as driven in; that much we determined. And thanks to the changes, refinement, and the ultra-exclusive limo option, it’s that much better than before, whether you’re bombing at 150 mph down the autobahn or rolling up to The Peninsula in Beverly Hills in the backseat with the champagne chilling.

Bentley Barnato could be the name of the British luxury brand’s upcoming two-seat sports coupe, Auto Express reports. The Barnato, which is slated for the 2019 model year, was previewed by the Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept that surprised everyone at the 2015 Geneva auto show.

The Barnato and Bentayga names were registered for trademarks two years ago by Bentley, according to the report. The name is inspired by former Bentley chairman Woolf Barnato, who also raced and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans three years in a row from 1928 through 1930.

While Bentley is also rumored to be working on an SUV coupe to arrive alongside the Bentayga SUV, Auto Express suggests the Barnato name would make more sense for a sports coupe. Although the two-seat Barnato would be smaller than the four-seat Bentley Continental GT coupe, it would be positioned as a sportier companion to the grand tourer. Like the next-generation Continental and Flying Spur sedan (and Porsche Panamera) models, the Barnato is expected to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular MSB-F architecture.

Rumors are still swirling about a possible fully-electric version of the new two-seat sports car. If it gets the green light, it could be developed alongside the Porsche Mission E. That model could compete with upper-level versions of the Tesla Model S sedan.

The production version of Bentley EXP 10 Speed 6 concept along with the Bentayga and upcoming SUV coupe are expected to help the British automaker reach its global sales goals of 20,000 vehicles per year by 2020. Bentley sold around 11,000 units in 2014 and 2015.

The 2017 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible is priced at $264,300 or $277,235 in Black Edition trim. All prices listed do not include destination, since Bentley has not yet finalized those fees.

The GT Speed comes packed with a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine making 633 hp and 619 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers are up from 626 hp and 605 lb-ft on the previous version. For 2017, the Continental GT Speed keeps the eight-speed automatic transmission from last year.

Bentley says the GT Speed reaches a top speed of 206 mph and can hit 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. The GT Speed is still Bentley’s fastest production car thanks to its top speed, although the Continental GT3-R is quicker with a 0-60 mph time of 3.6 seconds according to Bentley’s estimates.

Bentley showed off its GT Speed lineup at an event in New York this week, and these are some of the first live photos of the car we’ve seen. The automaker announced changes to the GT lineup last month.

Bentley dealers in the U.S. are now taking orders for the Continental GT Speed. Deliveries begin this summer.

The latest episode of “Head 2 Head” takes a look at two of the most ridiculous crossovers that have come to market: the 2016 Bentley Bentayga and the 2016 Tesla Model X P90D. Both vehicles offer insane levels of performance for their size especially in a straight line. To prove the point, hosts Jason Cammisa and Jonny Lieberman race an Alfa Romeo 4C Spider against a Model X P90D towing a 4C Spider to prove how quick that Tesla is.

Powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 that makes 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque the Bentley Bentayga offers exceptional power. The Tesla Model X P90Ds electric motors, on the other hand, produce a combined output of 531 hp and a pavement-destroying 713 lb-ft of torque. In terms of straight line performance, both cars were able to hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds or less and the quarter mile in under 12 seconds, putting them up there with the likes of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.

Despite their price difference, both hosts agree that the Model X and Bentayga compete against each other. The Bentley’s interior, however, may be too close to the Audi Q7, the car in which it shares its platform with. On the other hand, the Model X gives you all kinds of features that may seem cool but seem a little unnecessary. In terms of design, Cammisa and Lieberman weren’t really sure which one looks better thanks to their polarizing looks. To both hosts, the Bentley seemed to Germanic while the Tesla had a few gimmicky features that aren’t really a necessity.

Bright blue waves crash against the rocky coastline below me, but all I see from this dew-covered cliff 3,300 feet above the Pacific Ocean are opaque clouds blanketing the Earth like big down comforters. Overhead, a nearly full moon stands in for the morning sun, which is up but tucked behind the mountain peaks in Northern California’s Los Padres National Forest. The clouds creep slowly upward toward me and the all-new, $280,000 Bentley Bentayga at my side. It’s an enchanting, unreal scene I never imagined I’d see.

I tiptoe back to our campsite as the five others who made this trip to scenic Big Sur—my girlfriend, Kelly, our videographer Sandon Voelker and his girlfriend, Ellie, and our photographer Robin Trajano and his girlfriend, Sophia—are still asleep. Temperatures overnight dropped below freezing, so we all slept with our clothes on. I start a fire with eight bundles of cedar I brought up in the Bentley and make pour-over coffees in purple Mason jars. I’m eager to see how the Bentayga performs in environments it’s supposedly built for but will likely never see—bits of the world pavement can’t reach.

Soon everyone but Sandon, who’s come down with the flu, is awake, scarfing down Sophia’s breakfast burritos and doing their best to freshen up using only baby wipes and deodorant. Robin and I map out how to get from our spot on secluded Prewitt Ridge to the Old Coast Trail, a supposedly challenging road that spits you out at the north end of 84-year-old Bixby Bridge, a landmark swarmed by tacky tourists with selfie sticks. Ellie stays with Sandon as the rest of us, reeking of Right Guard, take off.

With the 2017 Bentley Bentayga set in Mud & Trail mode (one of eight driving modes that come with the off-road package) and its air suspension raised fully, we make our way back toward sea level, the big SUV’s hill-descent control keeping speed slow and steady. Felled branches and jagged boulders litter the road, but the Bentayga easily clambers over them. We follow the gritty two-track for a while before seeing another car, a VW Bus owned by a man nearly as dreadlocked as his dog.

The tops of the clouds lick at the edge of the road when we finally hit pavement, but we’re still 40 minutes from California’s historic Pacific Coast Highway and the rest of civilization. I mat the accelerator, and the Bentayga takes off startlingly fast for a 5,379-pound vehicle, reaching 60 mph in 4 seconds. The twin-turbocharged W-12’s 664 lb-ft of torque hits instantaneously, and its eight-speed automatic leaves no room between shifts as we hustle forward, fields of orange poppies dancing in our wake.

2016 Bentley Bentayga front three quarter in motion 02

Triple digits flash on the dash when I realize how steep the ridge next to us is. There are no guardrails, and a hairpin lies just ahead. I hammer the brake pedal, and every ounce of the Bentayga’s significant mass flies forward as the six-piston front calipers bite down, allowing me to make the turn without any real theater. A turkey vulture with huge, black wings and a bright red beak flies alongside us just before we get to the coastal road, where of all things we spot another of Crewe’s creations. It’s a Continental convertible, a car you typically picture when you think “Bentley.”

From there it’s a quick drive to Old Coast Trail, which we’re immediately disappointed by. It looks as challenging as a game of hopscotch. “It’ll get better as we go,” we all think silently, but it doesn’t. It’s a flat, groomed, totally tame dirt road we’ve wasted our morning getting to. I try to shrug it off by slouching in my form-fitting seat, reveling in the Bentley’s leather-lined, metal-trimmed, and heavily lacquered cabin, and singing along to the Rihanna and Whitney Houston songs coming through the $4,690 Naim audio system.

2016 Bentley Bentayga rear three quarter in motion

My best falsetto is interrupted by the heartstopping sound of compressed air breaking free from its confines. “A flat,” I say as I pull to the side of the road and jump out. I don’t see anything wrong with the front-left tire or any other tire, for that matter. A soft chime comes from inside the cabin just before one of the Bentayga’s springs spits air violently for a few seconds. Another does the same, then another. “Air suspension fault,” the dashboard message says. Seems the least exciting road in Big Sur broke this Bentayga.

As I try to fall asleep, the Bentley dribbles air tauntingly from its springs, slowly getting closer to the gravel beneath it.

I send a text to a friend at Bentley, hoping for some sort of hard reset or remote fix. In the meantime we start the journey back toward our temporary home, where Brian Kearns, chef at La Bicyclette in nearby Carmel, has graciously agreed to come by and cook dinner. We’re already running late when we get to the base of the road to Prewitt Ridge. Before we head up, I stop and check how the suspension is doing. Not well. The Bentayga is squatted way down, and ground clearance is now an issue.

2016 Bentley Bentayga front view in motion 01

With the sun sinking into the ocean, Robin and Sophia take off in our support vehicle toward camp. Kelly and I creep up the jagged trail, wincing every time we approach an exaggerated feature. Here, where large-clawed mammals roam freely and the only ambient light comes from the moon and faraway stars, the Bentayga’s in-dash night vision system almost makes sense. Fortunately we soon see our campsite, marked by a pink lawn flamingo and a crooked tree we draped with fairy lights. Everyone gathers around the fire to enjoy a three-course meal: beet salad followed by potato gnocchi topped with shredded short rib, with crème brûlée and deconstructed s’mores for dessert. We laugh and swap stories, and the fantastic dinner lets me momentarily forget our woes.

But as I try to fall asleep, the Bentley dribbles air tauntingly from its springs, slowly getting closer to the gravel beneath it. By morning, the car is slammed, looking ready for SEMA. There are 2 inches, if that, between the tires and wheelwells. There’s no cell service up here, and the SIM card for the Bentley’s 4G system is MIA, so we have little choice but to pack up and head downhill in the stanced Bentayga. Sandon and Ellie rightly decide to ride with Robin and Sophia, but Kelly sticks it out with me, a decision she soon regrets once we’re on the road and the quarter-million-dollar SUV starts to hop around like a cricket on cocaine. When we finally get a signal, we call Bentley. The automaker notes this is a preproduction model made very early in the build process, says it will send us a replacement Bentayga post-haste, and asks us to stay put. I politely decline, as there’s an out-of-place zebra farm the women want to visit somewhere between here and where we’ll now receive the other car, Oceano Dunes, two hours south.

glamping 04

The ride is jolting. Every hiccup in the road causes the Bentayga, now resting on its bump stops, to jump, which makes it hard to sing along with Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” We eventually get to Oceano, our bones rattling, and discover a trashy off-road orgy of ’80s-era ATVs and rusty Broncos. The second Bentayga, which shows up wearing beautiful bronze paint, looks very out of place here. We set up a small camp on the sand before watching the sunset from the fully functioning Bentayga’s foldout tailgate bench.

From there we head to nearby Santa Barbara to get a good night’s sleep, then wake at dawn to drive to West Camino Cielo Road. It’s one of the best off-road trails on California’s Central Coast, I’m told, but someone said something similar about Old Coast Trail, so I won’t hold my breath. And frankly, I don’t care if “sky road” is smoother than Don Juan. I’m just happy to be behind the wheel of a fault-free Bentayga again. It’s an astonishing vehicle, blending opulence and functionality in a versatile, attention-grabbing package. But what amazes me the most is its very existence. Not long ago, I would’ve bet against the British automaker bowing to the growing crossover fad, sticking instead to luxury coupes, convertibles, and sedans. But here it is, the Bentayga, silly name and all, the most expensive SUV in the world.

2016 Bentley Bentayga front end
The broken Bentayga looks more shooting brake than SUV, but a beautiful sunset, a great meal, and fantastic friends keep sprits up until the bronze Bentayga arrives; we do donuts and dance in the ocean to celebrate.

We wind our way up to West Camino Cielo, which isn’t a trail as much as it is a poorly weeded path a few people might’ve once driven on. It’s an uneven mess of boulders, flagstone, and deep furrows. It’s perfect. I put the Bentayga into Mud & Trail mode before locking the air suspension in its highest position and slowly setting off. The steering wheel shimmies back and forth as the big Bentley lumbers over rocks and crawls through mini canyons, and the tires spin on slippery stones as the computers adjust throttle constantly to keep up the momentum. We stray from the trail when we see a bog, deciding to test the first half of the Bentley’s Mud & Trail mode. Its laced chrome grille is caked brown by the time we’ve had our fill.

2016 Bentley Bentayga front three quarter off road 02
“Sky road” isn’t easy on the cushy Bentayga, but the Bentley traverses the scabrous landscape handily. When the wipers clean the mud-covered windshield, you see only dirt roads, dense forests, and boundless water.

Not much further up Camino Cielo we come across a 100-foot-high crag with an incline of 30-odd degrees.

I drive the Bentayga along a small road to the crag’s crest, where Sandon is waiting. He’ll be my spotter, helping me avoid scuffing the $2,420 wheels on countless sharp rocks strewn about my short route. I inch ahead until the front tires roll over the brink and the Bentley tips forward. “Hold,” says Sandon. “Now go hard left.” I turn the wheel to lock then ease off the brakes, and the Bentley begins to tripod, its right rear wheel about a foot from the ground. Progress down the slope is painfully slow until I hear a familiar sound and see the message: “Air suspension fault.” I yell at Sandon to move, lift off the brakes completely, and play a game of automotive Plinko, which the Bentayga gets through unscathed. After a few minutes back on level ground, the menacing maintenance message magically disappears. We planned to go the whole of West Camino Cielo—about 12 miles—and have lunch at the quaint Cold Spring Tavern that’s been tucked away in Los Padres National Forest since 1865. But after a couple hours we’ve only gone 4 miles and, given what happened with the first Bentayga, I cut the trip short and head back.

Halfway down Camino Cielo, I come to a stop. “What’s wrong now?” groans Kelly. “Nothing,” I say, staring through the driver’s side window at the ocean, forest, and untouched alcoves sitting some 3,000 feet below us. By focusing on the Bentayga’s preproduction growing pains for the last couple days, I haven’t allowed myself to appreciate these unreal places. In a Bentley SUV nonetheless, which is as novel as it is incredible, like seeing a moon at sunrise or standing above the clouds.

Bentley has revealed a new Apple Watch app for the Bentayga, which will allow you to control the vehicle’s in-car systems. Passengers being driven in the car will be able to remotely control the on-board climate, entertainment systems, and adjust heating, ventilation, and massaging functions of their seats. Additional functions include the ability to monitor outside temperature, vehicle speed, and distance traveled. The app uses the Bentayga’s Bluetooth connectivity to sync with the user’s Apple Watch and the car’s infotainment system.

“This new Apple Watch connectivity is another example of how we are constantly innovating in order to enhance the customer experience,” said Dan Whittaker, Bentley’s director of electrical and electronics, in a statement.

Bentley is only the latest automaker to offer an app that will allow drivers to monitor their vehicles via their smartphone or a smart watch. Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Ford, Porsche, and BMW all offer apps for your highly connected mobile device that allows you to adjust the car’s climate controls, use the infotainment system, and in the case of hybrids and EVs, monitor how much charge is left on the battery.

Given the breadth of powertrain options offered on Bentley’s other models, from V-8 versions of the Continental GT to all-out Speed versions of that model as well as the executive Mulsanne sedan, the rumor mill churned early on the prospect of a full-on Bentley Bentayga Speed. We’d heard ourselves that there was certainly room in the lineup, but now CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has told Auto Express that one “might expect” the Bentayga to get the Speed treatment.

This is about as close as it comes to an outright confirmation, so at this point the Bentley Bentayga Speed is a foregone conclusion. The standard Bentayga employs a 6.0-liter, twin-turbo 600-hp W-12 engine that makes a very healthy 664 lb-ft of torque, but that output could swell by at least 30 or 40 hp with an upgraded version of the current twelve-cylinder. As it is, the Bentayga hits 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds on its way to a 187 mph top speed, but that ceiling could potentially rise awfully close to 200 mph in Speed guise.

For that bump, as well as larger brakes among other key performance necessities, we can expect a price hike of about $35,000, based on what Speed versions of the Mulsanne and Continental GT cost compared to their standard versions. That increase would bring the Bentley Bentayga Speed up to around $260,000 to start.

As Durheimer told AE, China would be a key market for the Bentayga Speed. But because of the Chinese government’s current crackdown on corruption among the ultra-rich, buyers there are at the moment understandably hesitant to make a big show of wealth with something like the Bentayga, which is about as inconspicuous as a fireworks show in a convent. Once things calm down, expect Bentley to be there with the Bentayga Speed in hand.

In addition to a Bentayga Speed, we can also expect V-8 gas, V-8 diesel, and plug-in-hybrid versions to join the mix in the not-too-distant future.

Bentley devoted the Ides of March this year to exposing its future design intentions to a selection of automobile magazines, one from each country in which Bentley has a long-term interest. AUTOMOBILE was invited from the U.S. for the intimate gathering in London’s Hospital Club, where a new production Bentayga SUV and its much-talked about 2015 Geneva auto show concept — the EXP 10 Speed 6 coupe — were displayed in a well-lit gallery along with paintings and renderings of recent work and physical presentations of materials and techniques used in the production of the company’s projects.

New chief designer Stephan Sielaff presented a clever little movie showing the barest glimpses of things his design team has been working on, stressing all the while the confidentiality of what was being portrayed. As propaganda, it was magnificent. As information, it was wonderfully obscure, with very little substance. In effect, Sielaff was saying he and his team are going to continue to do what they’ve been doing, only better.

A company like Bentley, or Porsche (or Boeing for that matter) is in a really delicate position in that every product they produce is tightly constrained not just by their market — customer requirements — but by comprehensive and intrusive external regulations. Once they have gone through the excruciating expense of getting a given product through all the regulatory hoops, they have to find a way to satisfy highly diverse customers without arousing concern from the regulators. In the case of a Boeing or Airbus, customers cannot change the external shape of the product in any way whatsoever. The only external differentiator for their customers is the paint scheme. Anything else will trigger recertification, and massive costs. Specialty car companies can make more products, and can make superficial cosmetic changes and change their engines but the crash structure can’t be involved.

In Bentley’s case, the greatest scope for change is in the interiors. It is theoretically possible to make 10,000 cars, each of which has a completely distinctive interior, without involving the certified specification. This means that there will be more and more individually created interiors, with materials — all of them certified with respect to fire resistance — approved by the company as to wearability, texture, and surface finish, selected from a vast armory of possibilities.

And some of those possibilities Bentley has developed are nothing less than amazing. The craftsmen who have shown themselves so skilled with wood and leather have been inventing new techniques for using ancient materials, specifically stone and glass, heavy materials that present use case challenges. One of the reasons car side windows have been cut down in height in recent years beyond style concerns has been to help reduce overall weight as fuel economy becomes an ever bigger focal point for manufacturers.

To me the most fascinating new Bentley technique is a method of cutting stone — granite in the specific samples on display — into thin sheets a tiny fraction of a millimeter thick. They are a bit coy about how they do that. Lasers? Water jet cutters? Your guess is as good as ours. This veneer is of course impossibly fragile, but by laminating it to a thick, flexible layer of material, it can be handled and bonded to thin alloy sheets. By using that process, the granite (or other stone material) can actually be bent around tight radii so that the resulting trim piece for the instrument panel or console appears to be a piece of stone with rounded edges an eighth or more of an inch thick. Once the veneer is bonded to its substrate, the flexible protective layer is removed. Bendable granite! It’s actually a very nice effect.

The treatment of glass in headlamps is another impressive effect, making the lighting assembly seem more like an elaborate piece of precious cut tableware or spectacular chandeliers than a blob of amorphous plastic. Glass has been used for the “Flying B” hood ornament as well, reverting to the practice in the ’20s and ’30s of putting Lalique glass sculptures on radiator caps. There are many kinds of glass, and some of them are as crystalline and transparent as diamonds, luxurious indeed. Bentley showed what it calls “whisky glass headlamps” and it seems likely that all Bentleys will benefit from such detailing in the future.

3D Printed Titanium 01

Less a visual element, although the technical pieces shown were quite handsome, were 3-D printed titanium elements, again things that can enhance interior structures like seat frames or make hinges lighter and stronger than anything possible through conventional metalworking, which typically involves slow, expensive material removal. Additive manufacturing, the proper name for such “printing,” is promising in many areas, and seems likely to turn up in all vehicle mechanisms, particularly in engines and transmissions, where there are many pounds to be removed without remotely reducing strength. Jet engine makers are already using this to produce convoluted parts like turbine blades that can be made only with extreme difficulty — and cost — by other means.

future of luxury

The most revealing illustration Bentley agreed to let us show you is of an eventual luxury interior with facing divans at front and rear of the passenger compartment, with a sliding table between them. On it stands a coupe de champagne and a holographic image, presumably a 3-D television. On the roof rail hangs a garment bag, presumably for carrying the owner or passenger’s garments. Significantly, there is no steering wheel, no operational controls or instruments.

Clearly Bentley sees autonomous vehicles in our collective futures, with its traditional clients being whisked along in utter luxury in company with myriad Googlemobiles, the proletarian occupants of which will be going at the same speed but in much less sybaritic circumstances. But to show its solidarity with the people who can’t yet afford the Bentley experience, the firm makes extensive use of the diamond-quilting upholstery patterns that characterized the suits of Chairman Mao long ago.
