Just like the city from which they hail, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade and 2015 Lincoln Navigator have been renewed and rejuvenated. Big, truck-based luxury SUVs faced just as rocky a road as the Motor City over the past 10 years, yet both the Escalade and the Navigator got a new lease despite all the odds. Pricey gas, economic recession, and vehicular downsizing be damned, full-size luxury SUVs are here to stay.
That's not to say these behemoths haven't changed. Updated powertrains, an increased number of luxury gadgets, and more modern designs help the 2015 Cadillac Escalade and 2015 Lincoln Navigator stay relevant in today's new-car market. The SUVs are better than ever, but stark differences remain between Detroit's luxury giants.

One of the biggest disparities comes at the F&I desk, where prospective shoppers will find themselves spending far more for an Escalade than a Navigator. As tested, this Escalade demands an extra $15,960 from buyers than the Navigator. Even at this price level, that's a big gap -- although part of it stems from the fact that the Cadillac had features such as adaptive cruise control and a flip-down DVD player not fitted to the Lincoln. But, ultimately, anyone scrimping and saving to buy a new SUV probably shouldn't be looking at either of these vehicles. The question is, then, is how much luxury SUV buyers are willing to spend for a more premium experience.

Fixed Up, Looking Sharp

Of this pair, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade attracts the most attention. Its tidy, creased sheetmetal and elegant lighting stand out from the crowd. It's a modern take on what it means to build a big, boxy SUV, and the taut lines make the new Escalade look leaner and smaller than its measurements suggest. With LED lighting front and rear, it's easy to pick the Caddy out of the sea of crossovers in traffic.
The 2015 Lincoln Navigator, on the other hand, could be any Navigator from years past. Though there's a new split-wing chrome grille up front and reshaped lighting on the liftgate, little has changed compared to when Lincoln first entered the luxury SUV game. It's an indubitably stylish vehicle, but there's not much more curb appeal than in a loaded-up Ford Expedition. The '15 Navigator is a reheated version of last year's model while the Escalade is brand new, and the age difference shows.

That’s also the case inside, where Cadillac's matte wood and leather upholstery shout “luxury car.” The full-LCD instrument cluster can be reconfigured in countless ways, and all the physical switchgear is solid to the touch. Navigator drivers face a tiny analog speedometer sandwiched within a small color display. Prominent protrusions from the dashboard create an interesting shape, and leather and wood are available, but mostly this interior is plain and dated.

The most compelling practical reason for buying these big SUVs versus smaller offerings is the amount of room in the third row. The 2015 Lincoln Navigator more readily swallows a seventh and eighth occupant. Compared to the Escalade, the Lincoln's lower rear floor provides more legroom. We're plenty comfortable sitting in the third row on a sushi run at lunchtime, but those crammed in the rear of the Cadillac grouse about scrunched knees. The Navigator's cargo area also has a slightly lower liftover height, making it that much easier to fit boxes or luggage in the back. Whether you’re hauling people or boxes, the Navigator easily wins.

Same Road, Two Paths

Of course, these big vehicles are not purchased for their utility. They are personal luxury cars, in the same manner as the big Eldorados and Continentals were in earlier epochs. When you’re in the driver’s seat, it’s the 2015 Cadillac Escalade that impresses. Though it remains a body-on-frame SUV, the newest Escalade has such carlike reflexes you can drive it like you would a much smaller crossover. The Cadillac is nimble and composed, with light steering and little of the boatlike body roll of older Escalades. Despite the SUV’s length, we quickly find ourselves comfortable slipping in and out of freeway traffic, and we don't even sweat when negotiating busy city streets. This is a thoroughly new, modern taste of how a big SUV should drive.
The 6.2-liter V-8 engine is a bit of a throwback, but with cylinder deactivation and an eight-speed automatic transmission, fuel efficiency is up to an acceptable level for such a large, capable vehicle. We still love that hearty pushrod power when accelerating onto the highway, the eight-speed changes gears so deftly as to be unnoticeable to most drivers.

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator has dropped its V-8, hoping that the popular 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 is the replacement for displacement. The engine makes 40 fewer horsepower than the Cadillac’s V-8 and certainly doesn’t sound as good. But the EcoBoost’s torque curve swells so much earlier in the rev range (2,750 rpm versus 4,100 rpm in the Escalade) that the Navigator more definitively shoves you into your leather seat.
The rest of the Navigator driving experience is less modern, reminding us more so than does the Escalade that these luxomobiles are essentially body-on-frame pickups. Despite its Continuously Controlled Damping adaptive suspension, the Lincoln’s heavy steering and extreme body roll sap any confidence to thread the Navigator into smaller gaps. If the Escalade drives like it’s 80 percent of its real size, the Navigator feels 10 percent larger than it really is. Where Cadillac has made its full-size SUV easy and almost fun to drive, piloting the Lincoln is still something of a chore.

At the pump, the SUVs return basically the same fuel efficiency. The ability of Cadillac to shut off several cylinders, plus the super-low cruising rpm enabled by its eight-speed transmission, versus the six-speed in the Lincoln, actually allows the big V-8 to score 1 mpg better on the highway than Ford’s downsized V-6. Both manage 17 mpg in the city, which isn’t bad for a large, four-wheel-drive SUV but still sounds rather low by modern standards.

Style and Sensibility

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade and the 2015 Lincoln Navigator are the Shinola watches of the luxury SUV world. Prettier and more finely crafted than a Chevy Tahoe, Ford Expedition -- the comparative Timexes of this segment -- but no more functional, the Escalade and Navigator appeal to shoppers for purely subjective reasons: style, interior luxuries, badge prestige, conspicuous consumption. If you want a full-size luxury SUV, push aside rational concerns that the Lincoln is roomier and more affordable, and treat yourself to the glitzy 2015 Cadillac Escalade. The Navigator is a wonderful vehicle that will satisfy many buyers' needs to blend utility and comfort, but the Cadillac represents a fresher, more modern recipe for what a large personal luxury vehicle should be in 2015.

The vagaries of the oil market have granted Americans (relatively) cheap gasoline again -- less than $3 a gallon in many parts of the country -- and, unsurprisingly, sales of big, luxury SUVs are booming. They’re not ideal for carving up canyon roads or squeezing into tight urban parking spots, but for much of the driving that most Americans do, a big, honking luxury SUV is a pretty pleasant way to roll.
The Lincoln Navigator invented the genre, way back in 1998, and has been treated to an update for 2015. This isn’t a complete redesign, but with a new engine, restyled front and rear ends, and a redone interior, call it a major update.

From 8 to 6

The new engine is Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 turbo, which is standard throughout the lineup (standard in the Lincoln Navigator and Navigator L, each in 4x2 or 4x4 form). The six is the only game in town; the V-8 has left the building. Here Ford is displaying a bit more bravery than crosstown rival GM, which retained its 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V-8s in its redesigned big SUVs.
For Lincoln, the good news is that, from behind the wheel, you’d never suspect there are fewer than eight cylinders at work under the hood. Throttle response is linear, and the big Lincoln steps lively. The boosted six matches the Cadillac Escalade’s 6.2-liter V-8 in torque output: 460 lb-ft (delivered at 2,750 rpm versus 4,100), although the EcoBoost engine’s 380 hp is 40 hp shy of the Caddy.
Unfortunately, when it comes time to fill up, you’d again never suspect there were fewer than eight cylinders at work. EPA figures for the 3.5-liter Lincoln Navigator and the 6.2-liter Escalade are essentially a tossup, with neither having a clear advantage. (And while both SUVs currently use a six-speed automatic, GM is about to roll out an eight-speed, which should nudge its ratings a bit.) We averaged 17 mpg in a week’s driving, midway between the AWD Lincoln Navigator’s 15-mpg city and 20-mpg highway estimates.

What’s underneath does count

But, obviously, people buy these vehicles in spite of their fuel economy not because of it. They do so because they want a spacious, comfortable vehicle, and the Lincoln Navigator is one. In fact, it carves out significantly more usable space within its boxy body than does the newer Escalade. As you’d expect, the standard, 119-inch-wheelbase Navigator has a generous, three-person second-row bench -- or two captain’s chairs, with or without a center console. More impressive is that its standard third-row seat is adult-habitable, boasting some 13 inches more legroom than the all-but-useless third row in its regular-sized Escalade. The Navigator third row even has more legroom than the Suburban-based Escalade ESV. Credit the far superior packaging afforded by Ford’s independent rear suspension versus GM’s live-axle arrangement. The Lincoln Navigator also enjoys a (minor) advantage in behind-the-third-seat cargo space, in both the standard-length and extra-long versions.
The expected ride-quality advantage of Lincoln’s independent rear suspension is more ephemeral, however. We found that the Navigator pretty well smothers bumps despite rolling on high fashion, optional 22-inch wheels (20-inch units are standard). But the tall vehicle does suffer some head toss, even though our test truck was fitted with continuously controlled dampers, which are part of the Reserve package.

MyLincoln Touch, retouched

The Reserve package was more in evidence inside, where it brings upgraded wood trim and nicer leather (on all three rows of seats). The Lincoln Navigator has adopted Ford’s corporate instrument cluster (seen first in the Fusion hybrid) with a central speedometer flanked by two configurable screens. It’s modern looking and highly customizable, but you’d think Lincoln would merit its own design. On the subject of screens, we’re happy to report that the new version of MyLincoln Touch is vastly improved, as it junks the annoying slider touch bars in favor of, yes, actual knobs. Big, easy-to-use knobs control volume and tuning, and there are also physical buttons for seek, fan speed, temperature, and seat heating/cooling.

Roomy and comfortable, the Lincoln Navigator may be old school, but it does have a certain appeal. That appeal is particularly evident when gas is cheap. And while its 2015 update is not a comprehensive redesign, this big boy remains competitive, at least with other body-on-frame luxury mastodons.

Louisville, Kentucky — Revising the Lincoln Navigator for 2015 should have been a straightforward task and, indeed, brand manager Carey White convinced us that it was. “Whether it’s a hip-hop executive in Manhattan or an Orange County family, they want power and beauty,” White said during our drive through the countryside, as farmers harvested tobacco leaves and hung them in sheds to dry. An additional stipulation about the Navigator came from owners in Texas, where the luxury SUV has achieved inordinate popularity. They told White, “Don’t not make it a truck!”
The beauty part was first addressed by removing last year’s macabre mask of chrome. Lincoln’s split-wing grille has been inserted in its place. With simple HID headlamps and a tidy fascia, the Navigator looks proper and elegant. Only the optional 22-inch wheels are pretentious; the standard 20-inchers would be fine. Although we don’t normally condone lower-body cladding, the strips now affixed to the door bottoms visually counteract the reality that this “still a truck” has as much as 8.4 inches of ground clearance.
Now to the power. We can imagine those same traditionalist owners -- White claims a 60 percent buyer loyalty rate -- saying, “What do you mean it’s a six-cylinder?” The 2015 model is only offered with a V-6, whether in the lesser (119.0-inch) Navigator or long-wheelbase (131.0-inch) Navigator L, or the two-wheel- or four-wheel-drive configuration, weighing between 5830 and 6297 pounds. Chief competitors Cadillac Escalade and Infiniti QX80 are fortified with large V-8s, yet, for the sake of fuel economy, Lincoln has exclusively committed to the twin-turbo DOHC 3.5-liter V-6, with output of 380 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
Will Lincoln regret it? We were surprised at how good the EcoBoost engine played its tune in our regular-length 4x4 version. It made a fine pairing with the new six-speed automatic. When we turned the corner in Bagdad, a crossroads at which a whiskery old fellow is a front-porch fixture at the corner store and filling station, the turbo V-6 whisked us away toward bourbon and bluegrass environs at a brisk rate. When we later merged onto I-64, the engine wound up impressively and delivered us into traffic. Moving left and further depressing the accelerator, we noted a ready downshift to fourth, and the Navigator momentarily zapped up to 90 mph. All this was effortless and without any whistling or wastegates: In fact, the powertrain wouldn’t be more refined if Arturo Toscanini had programmed into the operating system.

We found a couple of drawbacks, though. For one thing, the V-6 clamors and drones more than expected. Big American trucks like the 2015 Lincoln Navigator should sound virile, not vapid. And be ready for surprises when it’s time to refuel. The engine will run fine on regular, but 93-octane premium is recommended for greatest efficiency. Had we stopped at the Bagdad corner store’s pumps, we would have been pleased by what Lincoln claims as best-in-class fuel economy of 18 mpg combined in the 4x2 short-wheelbase model. (It drops to 17 mpg combined for the 4x4 and the 4x2 Navigator L, and 16 mpg combined for the L 4x4.)
The 2015 Lincoln Navigator has a revised, excellent instrument cluster, but switching through the 4.2-inch screen’s menus in order to find the odometer was a big nuisance. Using the same screen to select one of the variable suspension settings -- Normal, Sport, and Ridiculous … ahem, we mean Comfort -- is equally distracting. So just leave it at Sport, which satisfactorily quelled body roll. Electrically assisted power steering, new for 2015, supplied good feedback. The Navigator is selling at an annual rate of about 9000 units (the luxury SUV class does 50,000), so updates have been slow to come, which might explain why another useful feature, blind-spot monitoring, is finally added.
A few features and niceties remain missing, though. For example, the second-row seats fold manually instead of being power-operated. It may be true that the Reserve trim level, which stands above Select and tops out at $75,065 (including shipping and handling), includes plenty of wood and leather, including a wrapped dash. But there’s still pebbly plastic within sight, and the fit of that trim between A-pillars and door lowers in our test -- “still a truck” could have been more precise. Regular life with the 22-inch wheels is another question, after we found their rebounding barely suppressed on harsh impacts.
The Navigator came out in 1998, helping to create a furor about grotesquely oversized luxury SUVs, which to their detractors symbolized excessive consumption like nothing else automotive. In the intervening years, the Navigator has blended in, becoming accepted as an upstanding member of society. The latest improvements are good news for capability-minded traditionalists, Texans moving up from their pickups, and families who must ford flash floods on the way to Disneyland.

The Lincoln Navigator received a major update and gets updated exterior styling, a new interior, and more customer focused technology. A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 replaces the 5.4-liter V-8, but power and torque are up significantly over the old V-8, and towing capacity remains the same.

Vehicle Overview

The Lincoln Navigator is a body-on-frame full-size SUV that offers seating for up to eight passengers, premium luxury features, and competes mainly with the Cadillac Escalade. The Navigator sits above the MKT as the largest and most capacious people-hauler in the Lincoln lineup. The pickup truck roots mean the Navigator retains its towing capacity, while an independent rear suspension means the third row and cargo capacity are more generous than the competition from General Motors.


The 2015 Lincoln Navigator drops the 5.4-liter V-8 in favor of a 370-hp twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that produces 430 lb-ft of torque, which gets paired with a six-speed automatic that can be paired with an all-wheel-drive system or the standard rear-wheel drive. Power is up 60 hp and 65 lb-ft over the replaced V-8, towing capacity stays at 9,000 pounds, and fuel economy goes up two mpg to 16/22 mpg (city/highway) in RWD models. The 4WD standard wheelbase models and RWD long wheelbase models are rated for 15/20 mpg, while 4WD long wheelbase models net 15/19 mpg. More power, more fuel efficient, and no loss of capability? There’s little to complain about with the powertrain changes. The Lincoln Navigator maintains its luxury SUV status by offering premium features such as power-deployable running boards, a power liftgate, heated/cooled front seats, a power folding third-row, wood inlays, dual 7-inch LCD rear entertainment screens, passive-entry with push-button start, and a THX II certified premium audio system.
A blind spot warning system with a cross traffic alert combined with six airbags and a robust design help the 2015 Lincoln Navigator to earn a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the highest possible rating. The Navigator has not yet been tested by the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 Lincoln Navigator brings significant changes, but is it enough to entice buyers from the entirely new Cadillac Escalade? The Lincoln, which is sometimes as much as $10,000-$15,000 less than the Cadillac when similarly equipped, beats its rival in towing capacity (9,000 pounds versus 8,300 pounds), passenger space (the Lincoln claims almost 13 more inches of legroom in the third row), and more cargo capacity when the seats are folded (the advantage is due to packaging afforded by the independent rear suspension on the Lincoln over the live-axle on the Cadillac). Where the Navigator doesn’t shine with fuel economy, as we've found with Ford's and Lincoln's new turbocharged EcoBoost engines you can have Eco and Boost, but not usually at the same time. the Escalade, with a more powerful 6.2-liter V-8, manages 15/22 mpg in standard or extended wheelbase models, just one-mpg below the Navigator and even in the extended wheelbase models. In a Driven Review of a 2015 Lincoln Navigator we were elated to note that “the new version of MyLincoln Touch is vastly improved, as it junks the annoying slider touch bars in favor of, yes, actual knobs. Big, easy-to-use knobs control volume and tuning, and there are also physical buttons for seek, fan speed, temperature, and seat heating/cooling.” The continuously controlled suspension damping helps to smooth out the ride, but we noted, “Regular life with the 22-inch wheels is another question, after we found their rebounding barely suppressed on harsh impacts.” The standard 20-inch wheels look good enough, we think, to justify the improvement to handling and ride quality it what ought to be a supremely comfortable vehicle. Is the 2015 Lincoln Navigator better than the Cadillac Escalade? There are trade-offs and the Lincoln is definitely cheaper, but it will likely come down to preferred styling and just how important the status is that comes with the Escalade nameplate.
