New For 2014

Lincoln has not yet announced any changes for the 2014 Lincoln Navigator.

Vehicle Summary

The Lincoln Navigator debuted in 1997 as a luxury version of the Ford Expedition. An updated version launched for 2003 and has changed little since -- this is an old-fashioned SUV with a trucklike frame and a big V-8 engine. Sales regularly topped 30,000 units annually in the Navigator's heyday, but since the economic crash of 2009 and the onset of higher gas prices, the Navigator has steadily sold only about 8000 units a year. In comparison, the Ford Taurus accumulates that many sales each month.

The 2014 Lincoln Navigator is enormous and well-appointed, but it is also starting to show its age. Neither its chrome-laden exterior nor its leather-lined interior is as sumptuous or as attractive as those in other Lincoln vehicles. What it does have is an abundance of space, seating for seven, and seats that fold completely flat for a useful load floor. It is a spacious choice for hauling a large family, and is exceptionally smooth and comfortable on highway runs. Braking and handling feel more like those of a pickup truck than a modern SUV. Luxury touches include a fourteen-speaker surround-system system, available walnut wood trim, parking sensors, and a backup camera. There is an available touchscreen navigation system, but it is an older and simpler system that the MyLincoln Touch interface used in other Lincoln models.

A 5.4-liter V-8 engine directs 310 hp through a six-speed automatic transmission; both rear- and four-wheel drive are available. Cargo capacity is only adequate with the third row of seats raised, but the Navigator offers an enormous 103.3 cubic feet of space with the second and third rows lowered (128.2 in the long-wheelbase model). The Navigator can also tow up to 9000 pounds, far more than most of its unibody crossover competition. You pay for all this size and capability at the gas pump: the EPA predicts no better than 20 mpg on the highway and 13-14 mpg in the city.

You'll like:

  • Room for seven passengers
  • High tow ratings
  • Lots of cargo space

You won't like:

  • Least stylish Lincoln
  • Least fuel-efficient Lincoln
  • Least luxurious Lincoln

2015 Lincoln Navigator Spied Front
To do battle with the upcoming 2015 Cadillac Escalade, the Lincoln Navigator will be significantly refreshed for 2015, gaining Lincoln’s signature split grille design along with new powertrains. We recently spied a prototype of the Navigator testing, giving a glimpse of the updated styling front and rear.
