Vehicle Summary

The Lincoln MKS was first shown as a concept car in 2006, but it wasn't until a year later that the production version, which went on sale as a 2009 model, made its official debut at the Detroit auto show. The MKS is a big luxury sedan that is built on the basic chassis of the Ford Taurus. However, Lincoln supplies a long list of exclusive features and shiny dress-up parts to help distance the MKS from its more common roots. The car had a thorough freshening for 2013 -- the hood, grille, fenders, and fascias were redesigned, plus more horsepower and improved brakes were added. There are almost no changes this year.

Overview

The 2014 Lincoln MKS is based on the workaday Ford Taurus, but Lincoln offers a long list of technology and shiny add-ons in an effort to transform the sedan into luxury-car material. The most notable of those technologies is Lincoln Drive Control, which allows the driver to switch between Comfort, Normal, and Sport modes for the steering, suspension, and transmission. The suspension firms up in Sport mode, but it also becomes harsh over bumps; the Comfort option provides an excellent ride but also causes the MKS to wallow and roll. Also available are advanced options like blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and automatic braking, MyLincoln Touch, a self-park function, lane-keeping assist, a giant dual-zone sunroof, heated and cooled front seats, Bridge of Weir high-quality leather, and massaging seats. Remote start is standard.

Although the standard 304-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 is a very good option, the optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6 is our favorite thing about the 2014 Lincoln MKS. Its 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque are delivered instantly, with neither lag nor hesitation, and provide the strong acceleration that we think is a must-have in a large sedan. An updated all-wheel-drive system helps put that power to the ground without the steering wheel twitching or pulling to the side, too. (The base V-6 can be equipped with front- or all-wheel drive.)

The new sheetmetal keeps the 2014 Lincoln MKS looking contemporary and fresh, but the styling isn't as cohesive as the bold new Lincoln MKZ. Inside, toggling through screens on the LCD instrument cluster is tricky, and the capacitive slide controls on the center console can be difficult to master. The back seat and trunk, however, are roomy and on par with the best cars in the segment. 2014 Lincoln MKS sales are pretty low, and the company had hoped that the addition of more options and technologies would help boost the car's appeal. So far that hasn't really happened, but there are still plenty of reasons to like the MKS.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
Consequences
If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
Remedy
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10.
