2012 Lincoln MKS
2012 Lincoln MKS
Lincoln introduced the MKS to the world before the Mercury brand was killed. At the time, Lincoln and Mercury models were competing with each other for the same small share of Ford's attention. Now that Lincoln stands alone as Ford's premium brand, we've been promised a significantly upgraded MKS flagship sedan. Unfortunately, it will not appear until 2013 at the earliest. The MKS doesn't feel significantly different from the Ford Taurus that shares many of its mechanical parts. Available all-wheel drive is a great feature for consumers in the Snow Belt, and the EcoBoost direct-injected turbocharged engine really helps the MKS get up and go, but the big sedan doesn't feel nearly as luxurious as its Japanese and German competitors. Nothing in the steering, ride, or handling departments is exceptional, and the car is better at floating over road imperfections than going for a spirited drive. There are all sorts of technological features -- HD Radio, Active Park Assist (a fancy name for automated parallel parking), and radar-based adaptive cruise control, to name a few -- that might delight the more tech-savvy consumer, but virtually all of these features are available on the competition. If you're looking for a soft ride in a large car, the MKS might fill the bill.

Ford can't keep up with demand for its EcoBoost V-6 and 3.7-liter V-6 engines. The automaker is adding a third shift to its Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, a move that is expected to require 250 jobs mostly filled by former employees at Cleveland Engine Plant No. 2, which ends production this week.
2013 Lincoln MKS Front
Lincoln design director Max Wolff says that almost every exterior part of the 2013 Lincoln MKS is new. While the car has been thoroughly redesigned, it still looks familiar: the 2013 model has received a mid-cycle freshening, rather than a full-on redesign. The 2013 MKS was unveiled today at the Los Angeles auto show. Lincoln says every panel forward of the A-pillars is new: the fascia, hood, fenders, lighting, and grille. The new front end design swoops downward, with a split grille angling down toward the center of the car’s fascia. Elegant strakes break up the large hood surface. New wheel designs, LED taillights, a new rear fascia, and a redesigned trunklid complete the exterior transformation. Inside, too, are updates like ambient lighting, the latest MyLincoln Touch infotainment system, new seats, and so on. Though our spy photos had hinted at some of the outside changes, we had no idea what to expect mechanically. The first major change is the addition of adaptive suspension, which Lincoln calls Continuously Controlled Damping. The system constantly monitors road conditions and is able to adapt the suspension firmness in as little as 11 milliseconds. The result, according to Lincoln, is a more comfortable ride and more engaging handling. The MKS also scores Lincoln Drive Control, which switches various car components between Comfort, Normal, and Sport modes. The system changes the characteristics of the adaptive suspension, transmission, electric power steering, and stability control system depending on which mode is selected. The 2013 MKS also gets new power, thanks to the addition of dual variable valve timing to the base 3.7-liter V-6 engine. Power jumps from 273 hp to 300 hp, and torque rises from 270 lb-ft to 275 lb-ft. Along with Active Grille Shutters and a new exhaust, the engine revisions also improve efficiency. Fuel economy ratings climb as much as three mpg, to 19/28 mpg (city/highway) for front-wheel-drive versions and 18/26 mpg with all-wheel drive. The optional 355-hp, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine is unchanged. To keep owners from messing up all that new sheetmetal, the 2013 MKS gains a blind-spot system warning and adaptive cruise control. The new Collision Warning system sounds an alarm and flashes a warning if the driver is about to rear-end another vehicle or obstacle, and Lane-Keeping Assist uses a camera to warn if the driver drifts out of his or her current lane. Wolff also hinted that another new Lincoln product will debut at the 2012 Detroit auto show in January. Our best guess is that we'll see a revised version of the MKZ in Detroit. The 2013 MKS goes on sale in spring 2012. For more on the 2013 Lincoln MKS, check out our First Look here. Our spy photographers have snapped two future American luxury sedans in testing: the Lincoln MKS and Cadillac XTS. Both cars are expected to debut within the next six months or so, and will be direct competitors once they go on sale.
