2011 Lexus GS 350
2011 Lexus GS 350
The GS series is the midsize in the Lexus model lineup. It was given a complete overhaul in 2006 and a much smaller update occurred in 2010. This was mostly an Audio/Video affair, which featured more connectivity for the radio system and a voice command for the navigation system. The GS line will carry over into 2011 with no notable changes. The GS series competes head to head with the likes of the Acura RL and the mid level vehicles from all the major German marquees.

Lexus offers the GS in three flavors. The GS350, a 303 hp 3.5 liter v-6 driving either two or four wheels through a 6 speed transmission. The GS460, which loses the All Wheel Drive option, ups the ante with a 4.6 liter V-8 making 342 hp and routing that extra power through a slick 8 speed automatic transmission. The final option is the 450H, which is the hybrid option. It uses the v-6 from the GS350 mated to nearly 40 hp of electric power. The hybrid eschews standard transmission choices for a continuously variable model.

In sharp contrast to the old model, Lexus promises that the 2013 GS will be sporty, exciting, and fun to drive. Don’t believe the hype? Lexus hopes this new marketing video will prove convincing. The artsy, overblown three-minute video shows the 2013 GS 350 in a variety of environments, from race tracks to winding public roads. Graphic cutaways highlight some of the innovations and upgrades that allow Lexus to claim the new car is more of a sports sedan -- a taut body, powerful 3.5-liter V-6 engine, adjustable suspension, and so on. The soundtrack is a blend of fast-paced orchestral music and the Lexus’ exhaust note. Our drive in a Lexus GS prototype revealed the new car to be much improved over the old model -- perhaps even so improved that the 2013 GS may finally a legitimate BMW 5 Series competitor. However, we question whether buyers will be able to look past the sleepy, cushy image of Lexuses past. Will pumped-up marketing videos like this help? Thanks to numerous teasers, spy sightings, and the LF-Gh concept, we had a pretty good idea of what the 2013 Lexus GS would look like, but we still had to guess about a few of the details. We guess no more, as Lexus unveiled the latest version of its midsize offering in GS 350 trim prior to the start of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The official unveiling of the 2013 Lexus GS is just days away at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. But why wait for Lexus to unveil the new GS? A news outlet in China apparently snagged photos of a mostly bare 2012 GS350 in China and put them out on the web for the whole world to see.
